Very happy informing y'all that I won the 2025 Distinguished Publication Prize of the European Academy of Sociology, for my ASR paper of last year. #EAS. My paper is here, open access: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... . The link to EAS: www.european-academy-sociology.eu/publication-...

journals.sagepub.comSage Journals: Discover world-class researchSubscription and open access journals from Sage, the world's leading independent academic publisher.

Glad to say that my paper “Time Discounting, Relative Risk Aversion, and Educational Inequalities” was accepted for publication in the ESR. It’s part of a special issue as a tribute to the work of Richard Breen, who retired in the past year. More will follow about the paper.

(1) a seminar on Ukrainian scholarship in Ukraine and at the EUI. Tymofii showed the position of the KSE, and the relevant skills that are taught for the war situation. Including teaching statistics to soldiers! There were also two presentations by Ukrainian scholars working at the EUI, >

Max Weber fellow and art historian Polina Baitsym and PhD researcher from our SPS dept Yurii Kondratyk. (2) Tymofii gave a sociology seminar, using 30 years of data from Ukraine on trust and engagement. Thanks Tymofii for being with us. And good luck and strength back in Kyiv.

For my new research unit Politics of Democracy at the Berlin Social Science Center @wzb.bsky.social, we have 3 open research positions. 2 postdocs: 4 + 2 years (100%) 1 doc: 2 years (75%) Starting date: 1 March 2027 (negotiable) Application deadline: 1 November

Jee, Springer I get multiple review requests PER DAY from your journals. Am I in some sort of database? My theory is that they bombard the ones who at least reply (even if negative) to their requests (suggest them/us to editors). I am doing my service but we all know there is a limit.

Man man man.

It was only two #PISA rounds ago that the Dutch minister of education said: but social skills are at least as important as literacy and math. While *some* change is observed, the Dutch political landscape is not able to address the declining performance in basic skills. >

School boards are too autonomous. Lumpsum financing is disastrous. Reading instruction is too technical, not substantive enough (just read!). Scientists say it. The Education Council says it. And politics? They don’t care because asylum seekers. It’s a shame.

One day in the 2000s, economists calculated that the declining #PISA-scores will lead to a sizeable loss in economic growth. I was then teaching 19-year olds who had been in a PISA cohort and said: c’mon folks we need you.

Here a podcast in which I was interviewed by Gabi Spilker and Marius Busemeyer, from the Konstanz inequality cluster.
