OTD UK Earthquakes. 16:25:25UTC October 28, 2001 M4.1 Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Felt The Wash-Oxford-Chester-York. Minor damage (Chimneys, cracked walls). Probably associated with bounding faults of the Carboniferous Widmerpool Gulf.

Foreshadowing #Aberfan. The failure of Tip 7 (1966/10/21) 60 years ago today resulted in the death of 116 children and 28 adults. In modern terms, this was corporate manslaughter. The National Coal Board knew that the tip was built over springs and Tip 4 (image GoogleEarth) had failed in 1944.

When I did my seismology PhD 40 years ago, I had to wait ~2 years for the seismograms to be collected, distributed on microfiche, travel to Edinburgh to copy them, before even starting analysis. Now you get Judith and Kyle producing 4 excellent data-rich articles in under a week after the ’quake.

Didn’t we just write a post about the Panama earthquake? Yes, we did, but now there is a new NISAR image for the eastern half of the rupture. And it has some pretty remarkable features! ⚒️ 🧪 earthquakeinsights.substack.com/p/another-qu...

OTD UK Earthquakes. 07:15UTC October 7, 1690 M5.2 Caernarfon, N. Wales. Little is known about this earthquake other than the felt area (London-Dublin) matches that of the 1984 M5.4 Llŷn Peninsula Earthquake, suggesting a similar location and magnitude.

OTD UK Earthquakes 03:22UTC October 06, 1863. M5.2 SW of Hereford. Damage in Hereford, Ross, Hay, Monmouth, Abergavenny. Felt Lake District - N. France. Probably associated with the Neath Disturbance. Effects in Kent described in a letter from Charles Dickens to his sister-in-law Georgy Hogarth.

A reminder that we already have an epoch for the duration of human interference with the Earth’s climate. It is called the Holocene.

⚒️ Sigh. Apparently we're relitigating the ICS vote to reject establishing the Anthropocene as a formal geological epoch. I'm not sure what is actually going to be achieved here except to keep everyone mad at each other and muddy public understanding. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Just as a reminder, in 2008, the year that Abu Dhabi bought Man City, Luton Town were deducted 30 points for financial irregularities probably involving less than 1% of this sum.

Manchester City artificially inflated its financial position by more than £900mn over a nine-year period in which it arranged ‘sham’ commercial deals and overstated its income, the Premier League said. ft.trib.al/IjPjVRI

OTD UK Earthquakes: 01:33:35UTC September 29, 1986. M4.1 Oban, Strathclyde. Felt Glasgow-Southern Syke. Two foreshocks the preceding day and three aftershocks were also felt. The Oban Times declares Oban “shaken - but not stirred” Earthquake probably associated with movement on the Great Glen Fault.

OTD UK Earthquakes: 04:23:46UTC September 23, 2000. M4.2 1km W of Warwick, West Midlands. Felt Wakefield-Hay-Salisbury-Ely. Possibly associated with the Western Boundary Fault of the Warwickshire Coalfield.

OTD UK Earthquakes: 23:35:15UTC Sept 22, 2002. M4.7 3km NW of Dudley, West Midlands. Felt across England from Durham-Plymouth-Dover, also Dublin. Light damage. Probably on the Western Boundary Fault of the South Staffordshire Coalfield - a continuation of the Malvern Line basement structure.

Standing on the Shoulders of Giants. This is my academic family tree (parent = PhD supervisor; grandparent = their supervisor, and so on.) I'm astonished to be able to get back to the early 1600s (I serendipitously discovered a short-cut). There are some illustrious scientists in this list.

I do dislike the in-built obsolesce of modern things. Perfectly good laptop destined for the scrap heap because progressively cut off from various software through lack of updates to os. Let’s give this linux thing another try.

The next webinar from the series TCS AH 'Induced Seismicity' will be on Thursday June 25, 2026, 4 pm CET: Gisela Viegas (Newmont Corporation, Australia) Discriminating rock failure processes in hard rock caving mines using seismic moment tensors tcs.ah-epos.eu/webinars/

OTD UK Earthquakes: 00:25 June 7, 1931. M6.1 Dogger Bank, North Sea. UK’s largest historic earthquake. Ellen Bradley in Hull, "unnerved as a result of the shakes”, heart attack next day and died. Felt across British Isles and NW Europe. Possibly associated with the Outer Silver Pit Fault Zone. ⚒️🧪

Can’t vote today for the party I support (not standing in my ward) and can’t even afford to vote for my better half who is standing to be a councillor (not going to win). Have to vote for party I intensely dislike to attempt to keep out a party of racists, fuckwits and sociopaths that I despise.

🎨 To help promote the benefits of geodiversity for Geodiversity Day 2025, a team from the Open University have worked with artscientist Dr Vicky Bowskill to produce this amazing image! 🌍 Read more, and download the image on our website: www.geodiversityday.org/post/visuali...

I have been teaching introductory computer programming for geoscientists for almost forty years now. This year I have added in using AI. [Insert expletive here], what a game changer. Still have to cover fundamentals for understanding but I can spend far more time actually explaining things.

#Autistic people in #geoscience, #highereducation, and beyond, are asking you to understand who they are, rather than what they are. If you would be willing to listen, please consider taking 15 minutes of your time to read this short article: rdcu.be/eUU8E #autism #inclusion #neurodiversity

"reward institutions for specialisation by making them a “partner of choice” in specific areas of research" - I dislike this. Sounds like we're going to reduce the diversity of folk tackling research topics and create elitist silos. UKRI chief pledges shift from short-termism in research funding

P- and S-waves from yesterday’s (23:23:32 UTC 2025/12/03) M3.4 earthquake 3km depth beneath Silverdale Lancashire, UK recorded on my @raspishake.bsky.social in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England (about 130km southsoutheast of the event) ⚒️🧪

BGS SEISMIC INFORMATION ... SILVERDALE, LANCASHIRE 03 DECEMBER 2025 23:23 UTC 3.3 ML The following preliminary info is available for this earthquake: DATE: 03 December 2025 ORIGIN TIME: 23:23 34s UTC LAT/LON: 54.169° North / 2.838° West GRID REF: 345 kmE / 475 kmN DEPTH: 3 km MAGNITUDE: 3.3 ML

I’m wondering if the official location / origin time is a bit off for this event. All the UK records that I have seen have the P and S predicted times about 4-5 seconds ahead of the actual arrivals.

That’s a nice ring ditch you have there, it would be a shame if someone dug a powerline to a mobile phone mast through it. ⚒️🧪

So good to be outdoors supervising a GPR survey today, but why do I always get asked to do this stuff in winter rather than summer? Historic landscape with spectacular views across the region. No wonder our forebears venerated this place.
