Friends in Toledo, OH, Iowa, and Texas who have not yet voted, please consider if your democratic nominees are who you would like to vote for as representatives of your pro-trans, pro-LGBTQ+ values. Toledoans may know Kaptur as deeply anti-trans, seemingly more than Brown or Acton.

I love learning etymology. Of course luthier is the word for a person who builds and repairs guitars because they also work on lutes. It makes complete sense. And yet I have never once thought about it.

If you hear about labels—words that describe individuals and groups—and think that they have only ever been able to be prescriptive, that reflects more on your ability to be an effective communicator and thinker than it does on the actual language use

I try to remember it's okay how often I have to ask questions about information that is implicit or seems to go without saying, because other neurodivergent people will often immediately follow up by saying they didn't know either or even thanking me for asking. Be the brave one. I believe in you!

I left X *because* I had a large following. People told me I was the reason they were staying on there, and I didn’t want to be responsible for 100k+ people sticking around for abuse, CSAM, and Nazis. Simple as that

I left x despite having a large following bc I don’t want to make free content for the world’s wealthiest racist. It’s not worth it to me.

If anything were gonna make me a fully fledged conspiracy theorist, it would be that a proverbial "chat" went from livestreamers talking about their audience to how AI-genned writing refers to users referring to itself with zero apparent changeover as though chat somehow meant AI all along

Nobody talks about the part of teaching writing where I have to look up how to pronounce words in the students' major so I can ask them about it without looking like a goof. Today's current quest: Is it pronounced viola, or viola?

I was tempted to pirate HP, curiosity and all that. But @jessiegender.bsky.social is right - think of the amount of times HBO commented on GOT leaks and downloads, just as an example. They DO track these things, and even that drives interest. Let this show die. Trans people deserve better.

What even is interoception? I just keep reading until I suddenly run out of energy & fall asleep. #Autistic

Journaling is not the best form of therapy. Going on walks is not the best form of therapy. Going to concerts and consuming live music is not the best form of therapy. All those things are great. Therapy is the best form of therapy.

I don't know at what point I went from "if you don't make your assignment sheets exactly a page, you're bad at teaching" to "this four page assignment sheet is woefully nonspecific and needs more info to be meaningfully helpful for students." It was sure easier for me to write the brief ones!

I hate how long it takes for me to get into a flow with grading and then by the time I do I realize I have other stuff I really need to be doing also, like eating dinner. I can't grade and multitask on other stuff, it makes it take SOOOO much longer for me.

I see this a lot: “Autism isn’t cute or quirky, it makes my life hell, & anyone finding pride in it is diminishing my pain.” Listen. You are going to be autistic your whole life. It will not go away. You can choose to hate every second of it, or you can look for ways to like yourself./

Day -3 of my first semester of being a Real (Assistant) Professor, and I immediately understand why every first-year academic is like that. Why is everything on fire? Why is everyone terrible at communicating? Or doing anything? Do I have to fix it? Is that for me to do?

People shouldn't be allowed to vote until they can use Boolean operators. I'm serious. Search engines should be legally mandated to have them with massive repercussions.

Sorry chatbot lovers but the waning of Boolean operators in most search functions on websites has made my life actively worse. You can't find anything, you can only have things suggested to you.

Every. Single. Person. thinks their way of communicating is the one in which they are saying what they (actually) mean. There's kind of an objective way to be literal/straightforward/direct/etc but also not really. I'm not saying it isn't possible to euphemize. Once you do, it is literal to you.

It's not very straightforward in the sense that you have to know what that phrase means in order to know what I mean by it, otherwise you're probably not going to be able to guess. But if what you call "heavy rain" is what I conceptualize as "cats and dogs" rain, then it is to me.

For me, "cats and dogs" is a new signifier for the signified 🌧️. If you call it "pleue fort" and I have to translate my thoughts from my version of English to your French, I'm being direct for you, but I'm no longer being direct for me. It is impossible to perfectly say exactly what we mean.

Let's say I said "it's raining cats and dogs!" every time it precipitates. Most people would ahree that's a nonliteral, nonobvious idiom: Felines and canines are not falling from the sky. Nor is the rain really comparable to those creatures or their habits or whatever.

TW: Suicide If you tell people you have SI, many are likely to suggest you call 988 or text the suicide lifeline. These are good resources *if you need to be kept physically safe;* they are not as helpful if your ideations are passive. Allow me to share some things that have helped me. /1
