The film unearths new dimensions of this story, and underscores an important point: the phenomenon of oligarchs acquiring supra-governmental power, without elected roles and often with little accountability, is bigger than Elon Musk, and we’re all living with the consequences.

What this thread fundamentally gets—something that clicked for me while working with Amazonian forest peoples in grad school—is that all identities, group or individual, are constructs. That makes them no less valuable, only more mutable, contingent, contestable, ephemeral.
There are so many "non-white" populations that assimilate into American culture seamlessly, that it fundamentally challenges any idea of whiteness. That's why he gets worried. Indian Americans are a really good example of this "problem".

Everyone is in an act of assimilation with everyone else. There is pain and trauma running through all of it. And there is the joy of your peculiar cultural heritage also. We want to hold on to our distinctness, while also wanting to be accepted in a pan-cultural space as normative.

this is an…unbelievable paragraph. yeah, what could be the difference between the court overturning a duly-passed and signed law and the court overturning an executive memo that violates the law?
The paragraph before seems equally detached from events—this would-be stumper of a question about the Court overturning executive orders is a lot less of a stumper when the executive orders keep violating laws passed by Congress!

The IRA was good policy. And it would have been better -- and had faster & more dramatic results -- if not constrained & blunted by the idiosyncratic assholery of one dimwit egotistical senator. Just because it couldn't stop a global tsunami of discontent doesn't mean it "didn't work."

"Davis, the government says, has attended and facilitated meetings about protests and discussed his anti-authoritarian ideology with other activists. He is not accused of violent acts, taking any specific actions at protests nor having any encounters with ICE agents. He is facing 6 years in prison."

Throughout U.S. history, and starting immediately upon the publication of the Declaration, those excluded from the promise of equal status and participation read Jefferson’s words not just as a statement of lofty principles, but as a call to action, an emancipatory agenda to be enacted.

Now this, this is a spicy meatballs.
Because the thing is, you can't have normal democratic politics except without climate policy. A major push to decarbonize is where any rational, minimally accountable government is going to land in the 21st century. If that's not where you want to end up, then you need a different kind of politics.
Back when Twitter wasn't a hellhole, I posted how we're not ready to hear that the rise of Trumpist fascism has been on the back of a (then) billionaire's federal loan- and carbon-credit-boosted EV + solar fortune. History is not a straight line. heatmap.news/daily/spacex...
If you don't occasionally drink it, this is probably true. Also, remember olive oil is a kind of fruit juice: you should keep it fresh, use it promptly, and don't "save" the good stuff for a couple years on the top shelf.
Blind item: you (yes, you, I’m talking to you specifically) aren’t using enough olive oil in your cooking.
