" #SantaMaria has been one of the hardest hit communities. ICE activity has been reported almost every day this month, including at the North County Branch Jail, workplaces, and near schools."

"Jailhouse lawyering is akin to reverse-engineering. We know the problem very well, but have to work backward to uncover how it came to be. We start from the dusty memories of grade school civics class talking about the supposed three branches of government & follow the law from Congress ..." -Peppy

Freedom shouldn't depend on a bureaucrat's interpretation of the law. The Bureau of Prisons found a way to keep people locked up longer. Jailhouse lawyers found a way to fight back. Brian “Peppy” DiPippa writes about a legal battle that changed federal prison regulations. cldc.org/pushing-back...

Heyo! It's been a few months since I've been otg for anything but here I am at St. James Park in #SanJoséCA for today's #NoKings protest — the fourth if my count is correct. The crowd is much lighter than prior events and there's now a San José PD Guardian in the middle of the park?!

Tallying Real Estate and Development Contributions to Ryan Coonerty's Mayoral Campaign

indybay.orgTallying Real Estate and Development Contributions to Ryan Coonerty's Mayoral CampaignCampaign finance records show Ryan Coonerty has received roughly ten times more in real estate and development contributions than Ami Chen Mills has during the 2026 campaign for Mayor of the City of Santa Cruz. As of September 19, Ryan Coonerty has accumulated $15,448 in contributions from real estate and development interests, out of the $131,978 in total contributions made to his campaign. In comparison, Ami Chen Mills has only received $1,660 from real estate and development interests in her bid for mayor, and has raised $43,398 in total contributions. Besides direct campaign contributions, Coonerty has received support from the group Santa Cruz Together, which has reported spending $13,410 to print up and send out campaign mailers promoting Coonerty's campaign. Records show that Santa Cruz Together has been funded by only three contributors during the 2026 mayoral election, all of which have major development interests in the city: Green Valley Corporation, S.C. Beach Hotel Partners, and the Santa Cruz Seaside Company. Additionally, many community members are referring to Ryan Coonerty as a "developer' after he filed financial documents in March of this year that show he was paid to do consulting work for multiple development firms, including Redtree Partners, 201 Front SC, The Danco Group, Nielson Studios, and Lawlor Land Use, the company owned by developer Owen Lawlor, who has spearheaded a number of controversial projects locally, such as Anton-Pacific and the Cruz Hotel proposal.

With a new $100 million domestic spy program, ICE aims to map your social relationships. The goal is not just to terrorize immigrants, but to repress all dissent. As the Democrats look to return to office, we must make it clear that anyone who does not oppose this by all means is an accomplice.
