Today I waited for a 6-digit code on my phone so I could log into my patient portal on my computer so I could find the dates of my kids' last flu and Covid shots so I could go back to the Walgreens tab and finish booking our vaccine appointments and I think we might be asking too much of people.

Reading this really fucked me up last night. I suppose rape profiteering has been around as long as war profiteering. They’re siblings. That said, there’s something about the unapologetic attitude of betting on the implications of gang rape that bruised the inside of my soul last night.

Polymarket allowed users to bet on whether any one of the 7 defendants in the Cornell rape case will be charged with a felony sex crime and the market did almost HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN VOLUME

I noticed some winners of our school district's poetry contest were poems by Shel Silverstein (a writer whose oeuvre I'd more or less memorized). My dad told the organizers; the next year I received a fat folder of entries to check for plagiarism. Who needs the internet when you have an uncool 10yo?

Real question: Has Google Maps gotten stupider? I almost missed a kid's medical appointment yesterday because my phone was insisting that my destination was on the side of an I-95 onramp

I'm crying

Look I try to stay positive but every single headline this week has been a variation of "AI Declared Human; Women Not" and it's getting difficult

The Verge@theverge.com

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

This is very kind! I won't get royalties no matter where you buy the book, so all sales are the same to me. Audio or ebook? Also great. Check out the book from the library, then tell your friends about it and leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads? Amazing!

I am very interested , but i am also very poor, I like to make sure its th best deal for both of us lol . is that the best place (bookshop) to buy your book that you get the most for it, do you have a preferred marketplace to purchase it , or direct sales etc. ?

The Fat Bear Week winner used to ride on his mom's back, and survived a serious foot injury as a cub thanks to her care. The runner-up was a female who adopted her niece and raised her alongside her own cub. For more animal parents kicking butt, read my book: bookshop.org/p/books/the-... 🧪

Meet Backpack, your 2026 Fat Bear Week champion. Backpack is 20 years old, weighs about 1,000 pounds and got his nickname because, as a cub, he loved riding on his mom's back across the Brooks River.

Yes, searching for new reader reviews is a toxic habit that I should quit...BUT sometimes a stranger uncannily names what was one of your secret goals while writing the book and it's the best thing ever. 🧪

SO much going on here about parenting and living in America: medical insurance, employment, grief, depression, online mobs, baseball.

I've been curious about the balancing act that professional female athletes have to deal with when they become moms, and @emmabaccellieri.bsky.social does a great job explaining how four Washington Spirit players have managed it — with help from their teammates: www.washingtonsun.com/sports/spiri...

I'm honestly so confused about how these technologies are legal. I live in MA, a two-party consent state, which means it's against the law to record someone without permission. Every single time I interview a source I start by asking if it's OK to record.

Melody Schreiber@melodyschreiber.com

I really hope people understand the relevant laws in their states about party consent to be recorded

Any child can tell the difference between the living and the non-living. But what is the biological basis for life’s “aliveness?” While this question has long puzzled biologists, Addy Pross puts forth a compelling way forward. https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/is-life-itself-a-state-of-matter/
