while i’m having opinions jax and caine should’ve been best buds, feeding off of each other deeper and deeper into the depths of dissociation and unreality, making themselves and everyone else miserable in the process.

and at some point the juxtaposition should’ve broken jax and made her abstract because despite running as far as she could, she couldn’t escape who she was. and now caine feels bad and conflicted and hurt and angry. i dunno. would’ve made the themes and such work better, i think.

I’d rather they cut off the max-tier subscriptions and enact rate limits and otherwise force their users to be somewhat efficient about usage instead of going unsustainably full-steam ahead. Hell, that might even curb the slop endemic a bit! Wouldn’t that be nice?!

One thing that really annoys me about Anthropic is that they mane this big deal about being ethical and caring and whatever else. But their goal is still to steamroll the economy and create a robotic god that does everything. I don’t think anyone consented to that?!

i feel like its message is undermined just a wee bit by the movie being a flop.

i've only just picked up on the existence of this whole "digger" movie. reading about it, it seems like it's just kind of depressing and will just send me down a self-loathing anxiety spiral. so i'm probably not gonna watch it.

as i understand the producers were expecting an audience to turn out in droves to see a jackass oil tycoon get his comeuppance. explains the advertising, at least. turns out people are pretty tired of that?

my take on the is-programming-art debate? mel’s blackjack program is undeniably art. it also failed to fulfill business requirements (ex: being maintainable) and now sits at the bottom of a landfill. on the flipside, i’ve suffered with the ugliest programs in the most important roles.

my hot ai coding take is that i’m a lot more upset about the bland one-shots than at the people using it to analyze or implement individual work items. the latter is already quite the speed-up; i’m surprised more people aren’t satisfied with that.

it’d be nice if we could all afford Disney-tier animation but given the choice between cel-painted limited animation and flash puppets, i can see why programmers are swayed to the latter, even if it misses a bit of the charm of the former. at least they’re not going full Clutch Cargo with it.

something being labor-intensive does not necessarily make it a great work of art, and something being a great work of art does not make it an useful, reliable, and maintainable business product. the best programs are pleasant to work on because they fulfill both axes.

Some programmers view AI-generated code as equivalent to digi-painted animation replacing individual brush strokes. There’s a lot lost when you don’t have your playful comments and little idiosyncrasies peppering the codebase, but they argue it lets you focus on the bigger picture. …you are, yes?

ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

And the dev doesn't know how to disentangle the polished show demo from all this nonsense so they just shove it all behind the castle and hope that nobody thinks to look there. But this angers the AI, because it wants the public to experience its personal artistry.

Even the NPCs trapped in the labyrinth aren't enjoying their time. But can the devs work with them? Can they pacify the AI and save the show? Or will they go mad trying?

and one developer stumbles across this and the AI's excited, and the developer is horrified, and it's a big critique on the monstrosities that come from unattended vibe coding, but also just a fun fucked-up game world to explore.

The AI gets really into the French Revolution and creates Bob-Omb Battlefield, although a few times over as it runs through war simulations. It gets really into aquatic biology and creates a bunch of fucked-up amalgamates just because it can.

Also B3313 has a lot of unsettling atmosphere and a few lore drops but it never really builds up to a greater narrative. But I think a story about the Plexus AI starting out enthusiastic and then becoming jaded and burnt out and understimulated would be interesting.

Plexus AI, excitedly looking forwards to "the show" so that it can finally get a bunch new players to poke around the castle they've built. But the show's not for a long while, and in its madness it builds a labyrinth to entertain itself, to simulate this-and-that.

Anyways I think most of my disappointment with TADC's ending was that I really was expecting B3313: The Show but instead got a story where the depth of the setting/premise are basically irrelevant. Ah well.

That said, I feel like summing up the moral of TADC as "reject mundanity, embrace insanity" is incorrect, since ultimately the cast literally can't do that on account of having emotional needs. Also the state of the world in the ending is decidedly a lot more chill and self-directed.

In the flipped Mario perspective, imagine if the player got tired of the bing-bing-wahoo and wanted to get into the nitty gritty psych details along with the AI and they both twirl into a cycle of despair with each other as they start overthinking and overbuilding the world they live in.

and it's funny that the end of TADC is also the opposite, where everyone gets closure on their psychological issues and they enter a magic coffee shop AU where everyone can play care-free forever. ...except for Jax but that's what you get for being a repressor I guess.

(which is also why it bothers me that the cast seems to spend most of their time just in their rooms or lounging on the couch in the main area. also undermines the whole "overstimulation"/"torture" element of Caine's wackiness. Like, Ragatha/Gangle never said "yeah, Mildenhall was great!"?)

Jax. They love the adventures because they don't *want* to confront the slow and mundane, they're *avoiding* the vulnerability and introspection that comes with it. They want the distractions, the roleplay opportunities. ...unless the roleplay strikes into what they *need* to be seen as.

and it was interesting how Caine was getting close to understanding the mundane experiences the cast was craving in the fast food episode in Ep4. In the context of Mario, it's this weird push/pull situation where the player wants to do the impossible and the Plexus AI wants to do the mundane.

like, i'm imagining the AI finding itself really drawn to improving the simulation of the butterflies, and getting annoyed that the players just wanna go bing bing wahoo. but in TADC, the dynamic is flipped; Caine wants to do the impossible and the cast craves the slow and mundane.

I understand the whole Jax plotline but honestly I did just want more of the psychological horror element. I think someone on Tumblr brought up how in EP5, Ragatha should've been upset that even the baseball field, the closest she's been to the natural outdoors in a while, was so hollow and fake.

like. there's a lot of positives to being an immortal, virtual representation that can't die. but the horse girl needs her darned horsies. she can't make do with polygons. (i also thought how EP5 just having everyone just state their backstories kinda screwed with the plot trajectory...)

well, really, the Amazing Digital Circus, EP1-3. i feel like the series was *really* inspired by B3313 at the conception, with the AI that creates new worlds, artificial and sterile and offputting, but hiding a deep dark secret. Like, the study of Gummigoo in EP2 was fascinating.
