We aren't talking about EU member states [new or old]. We are talking about a non member state; the UK. The Ministers of Finance of the member states can set whatever ERM II mandatory requirements they wish on future applicants.

Sweden and Poland are availing a loophole, whereby they haven't signed up to the non mandatory ERM II. Rest assured that loophole will be closed off to the UK.

Before joining the Euro - accession states have to join ERM II. There is a current loophole whereby some members have avoided joining ERM II & consequently joining the Euro. That loophole needs to be and will be closed off to the UK.

No one suggested any country joins the Euro on Day 1. However, loopholes that allow procrastination and exceptionalism have to be closed off. Should the UK apply to join - they will have to join ERM II on Day 1 and agree a roadmap for joining the Euro.

Poland hasn't joined the Euro, as Poland has exploited the voluntary aspect of membership of ERM II. I suspect you were already aware of that. Exploiting loopholes isn't a sound framework for applying to join the EU. Expect those loopholes to be closed to the UK.

Ah, playing the man, not the ball. As stated previously - Poland exploits a legal loophole to avoid joining ERM II. If your strategy is to disingenuously sign up to our membership criteria & subsequently exploit loopholes to avoid obligations - best not to expose it on social media in advance.

The poorest people in Ireland, have a standard of living 63% higher than the poorest people in the UK. Northern Ireland has to leave the UK, and pursue Irish Unity.

Why hasn't Jack Ross been arrested?

Henry Dyer@direthoughts.com

Jack Ross, CEO of Turning Point UK and a former Conservative election candidate, has been suspended from the party in the wake of undercover sting by Al Jazeera reportedly showing him discussing the cost of hiring contract killers. Story from @benquinn75.bsky.social and me

Be wary of those who tell you, that you don't need the legal human rights protection of the ECHR. If you don't need the legal protection, then why are they trying to remove it?

So after a decade; the UK strategy is to avail of an ERM II loophole and try and deceive the EU into thinking it is serious about joining. The EU needs to shut off the ERM II loophole to all future members.

Exactly. There is no economic arguement for Northern Ireland to remain in the UK. There may be cultural and political preferences for one community to remain, but from an economic perspective - United Irelanders have already won the arguement.

Your comment fundamentally misses the entire point of the Union. We are a Union with common goals, values and objectives. The UK's relationship with the EU was always transactional, the UK never signed up to the concept of Unity.

Eurostat, OECD and UK Family Resource Centre provided the statistics; not me. For those of us who live in Northern Ireland - this is a real debate, not an academic one. We are better off in a United Ireland.

You seem to have missed the very obvious fact that both Ireland and Cyprus are EU members. They don't need to apply to join the EU or adhere to the membership criteria for states looking to join. The UK isn't a member and consequently can only join by complying with the membership criteria.

That's incorrect. Irish people have higher disposable income than people in the UK. Ireland isn't a tax haven. Multinationals paid €34.7Billion tax in Ireland last year.

It is absolutely clear. They legally expired when the UK left the EU. They haven't legally expired with respect to Ireland, as Ireland is an EU member state.

The EU made up it's mind on the Euro in the Maastricht Treaty & Schengen in the Amsterdam Treaty. UK Rejoin Exceptionalists should familiarise themselves with contemporary political reality in the EU, rather than wasting their time seeking confirmation bias from a UK exceptionalist echo chamber.

Ireland outperforms the UK on disposable income, median wage and living srandards for the poorest in society, as well as GDP per capita. Secondly, Ireland isn't a tax haven. Multinationals pay €34.7Billion in tax.

There is a clear reason. UK exceptionalism is the reason. Either embrace the Union and it's criteria, or forget about joining.

The UK's economic problems & inability to sell the benefits of membership to the UK public is the UK's problem; not the EU's. There is zero chance of the EU taking any discussions with the UK seriously when two of the UK's largest political parties are actively campaigning to leave the ECHR.

Ireland has a legal opt out, not a political one. Ireland wanted to & continues to want to join Schengen. Ireland only opted out in 85 as the UK opted out, & it wasn't possible to join without the UK, given the existing obligations under the CTA. The UK joining gives Ireland the opportunity to join.

On the contrary, no one is forcing the UK to join anything. If you want to join the club - accept the membership criteria.

It won't. The UK has a national debt that increases by £369million every day. The UK requires long term big fixes and Burnham is ignoring them.
