Four days ago, I did not know what PHP was. I am sad that I know now. Fortunately, the advice is the same as usual: update your software and be nice to your sysadmins.

VICTORY! EFF, our co-counsel and our clients have won our lawsuit against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. A judge agreed OPM violated the law when it disclosed millions of federal employee records to DOGE agents. The court will decide the remedy at a later date.

I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.

Fun fact! You do not actually have to show an ID to get on an airplane. You may be subject to extra screening, but you don't have to show an ID to travel domestically.

It doesn’t matter who’s in charge. FISA 702 can’t be renewed without real reforms. Case in point: Trump’s latest nominee for director of national intelligence was peddling election conspiracies just a few days ago.

Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1.bsky.social

Breaking: Trump says he's nominating Jay Clayton, the current U.S. Attorney for the SDNY, to be Director of National Intelligence. Just this week on CNBC, Clayton said the "American people are right to question" California's elections. To be clear: There is no evidence of fraud in those elections.

It would really help if you contacted your Member of Congress RIGHT NOW and told them not to extend 702 without a warrant requirement. 202-224-3121 or click here: act.eff.org/action/congr...

EFF urges Congress to “do the hard & responsible thing & come to the table to put in real protections for Americans,” EFF’s @irmck.bsky.social told @theguardian.com. “By just doing a straight-up clean extension, you’re abdicating your responsibility to the people that you are elected to represent.”

As I say in the piece below, this is the wrong question. While it's certainly politically popular to talk about protecting children, it misses what we actually need: a comprehensive consumer privacy bill that restricts data collection for all users and bans behavioral advertising.

Is it possible to regulate how platforms deliver content to children without infringing on free expression and potentially motivating platforms to gather more personal data to measure liability? Story: www.rollingstone.com/culture/cult...

And to be clear - I do blame the elected officials, but I also blame the voters who elected them to do this and who are encouraging this. This doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

House Republicans rejecting the Senate’s deal to reopen most of DHS out of hand without an alternate plan is just so profoundly irresponsible.

We sometimes joke that Congress/ the companies do weird or shady stuff to see if we are awake and paying attention. Turns out, we are.

👋 EFF's team of activists, lawyers, and technologists regularly take on multiple threats to digital rights and privacy. We've noticed, we're not distracted, and we'll be fighting back.

I am calling on @icegov.bsky.social Director Todd Lyons to immediately confirm or deny the existence of a “domestic terrorist” database. If true, you’re violating the Constitution. If not, maybe talk to your “border czar” to get your stories straight. This isn’t a game–it’s the Constitution.

It's Giving Tuesday, and thus, I ask for your support. EFF is actually grassroots funded, which is awesome, because that means I get to lobby on behalf of internet users, not internet companies. It's one of the reasons this job is the best. But we do still need money to do stuff, like go to DC.

Right now, your donation gets a FREE Power Up match! It's a rare opportunity to double your impact on EFF's legal, educational, and advocacy work when the world needs it most. If you've been waiting for the right moment to join EFF—this is it. eff.org/power-up

Just wanted to say this a little louder before I go to bed tonight - there's a lot EFF can do to represent internet users, but when people take the time to also speak for themselves, our message hits a little differently. Keep sending those emails!

We are thankful for every person who picked up their phones, went to a government meeting, or sent an email to speak up for what they believe. Your voices help us all!

Periodic reminder - if Congress is about to vote on a bill, and you have an opinion about that bill, you should tell your elected peeps directly. Most of us have 3 (sorry, DC), and they don’t coordinate, so you have to tell all 3 yourself. Call this, and ask to be connected: 202-224-3121

Emailing works too, but you have to take the step of finding the website and clicking some buttons. It’s different for all of them, and I can’t send you to just one website. Point is: Pick your pain point, and do the thing.

Caveat: I’m on sabbatical for a bit, so I’m not in the weeds at all on the current political situation. However, when one party has unified control of DC, it is absolutely bonkers to blame a shutdown on the minority.

Now, there is a non-insignificant part of the majority party who just hates spending bills and will vote No on anything that requires the government to do its job, so the Republicans have had to rely on some conservative Democrats to get things done.

But if the Republicans don’t negotiate with those Democrats to write a bill that any Democrat actually wants to vote for, the majority has a math problem.

Unnecessary hills I will absolutely die on - sticking "gate" on the end of something does not mean "scandal related to the thing." Watergate was the name of the hotel where President Nixon did illegal things. It was not a scandal related to water in any way.
