Arcade games, lock picking, speed cubing, movie reviews, late career law student, I'm "a little better than average" at a lot of dumb stuff. Love to hate my least favorite sports teams. I watched the Simpsons when it originally aired

The Nuemberg Defense (Superior Orders) goes a little like "I didn't think this was illegal because my boss wouldn't tell me to do something illegal." This defense is "It may have been illegal but I thought you couldn't prosecute me for it." That's worse.

Street Fighter spoiler free review: These guys did it right. What I wanted to see was a bunch of fights that reminded me of Street Fighter II from about 1993, and I got that. Characters used their signature moves, even their fidgets... 🧵

There isn't really that much to the story here, but characters actually do get interesting things to do. While the movie leaves with "looks like a sequel," it feels like "Pilot for a really high budget streaming show" that I would love to see...

The casting was fun as hell. Jason Momoa (awful Aquaman, adequate Lobo, PERFECT Blanka), Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and Indian action star Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim. Four out of five Hadokens.

Visual effects were fine, mostly in the action sequences with one or two surprises thrown in for flashbacks. When I saw the Masters of the Universe movie, I was really disappointed at how few of the characters we saw fight (Trapjaw 3 times?!?)...

But here, EVERYONE gets a chance! Consider Zangief, who you might remember from Wreck it Ralph's therapy group ("Just because you bad guy, don't mean you 'bad' guy, yes?" We don't get a full Z fight, but we see feats, we see some of his moves, he fights in a brawl. Loved that...

The music was a hell of a pleasant surprise, with songs I hadn't heard in forever from the pop-rock of the mid 90s featured prominently, and cultural references to what felt like old MTV (a couple of the flashback bits looked like MTV Spring Break nonsense)...

When Gonzo the great said that he was weird in the Muppet Babies cartoon and I realized that that's okay.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?

⭐💲💲: hey, what's your preferred order? Me: drip, because you pour it, and it's done and I can go. Them: good news! We've made that experience better by brewing a fresh cup every time you order, just like the espresso drinks! 😊 Me: 😑

My take on this (and I'm sure this is not unique) is that our rationality is only part of our humanity. Our desires, specifically when they cause us to do things that are objectively irrational, are another part. Remember a stupid thing you did for love, or out of anger? That was pretty human.

This debate really gets to interesting discussions about what we mean by intelligent or sentient or the like, because these terms have always been based on "how much is it like humans," instead of envisioning an alternative mode.

One of the things I miss most about my hearing is not being able to do pub quizzes anymore. Unless the entire room is deathly quiet, I can never understand the questions. And once people start talking about answers I can't distinguish the useful voices from the background. 🙁

Saoirse is in an afterschool program, and today she excitedly told me all about the SMART test for evaluating the credibility of information (source, motivation, author, review, two-sources). I can think of a lot of adults who would benefit from this class designed for 4th and 5th graders.

This makes me really happy, KCMO still gets a seat in the house. :-)

As big as it gets: The Missouri Supreme Court has blocked the Missouri GOP’s gerrymander, and ordered that a citizen-led veto referendum be placed on the ballot. The SoS had blocked it. This would likely reverse the expected GOP pick-up of a Kansas City seat, and set up a huge November vote.

wr’re going to bomb the shit out of the yield curve

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

Reporter on Bond Market: The yields have come back up since then. Have you talked to Bessent about another type of intervention.? Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.

For us (also a daughter leaving for college Tuesday) it is her favorite special breakfast. Homemade crepes the morning we send her off.

My daughter is leaving for college this week, so we told her she could plan all the dinners -- order whatever she wants, go to any restaurant she wants -- and she said she wanted me to cook her favorite meal.

Hi! I'm about four French Fries from Wendy's. Maybe eat them one at a time, and maybe not while driving on a two lane road in the middle of nowhere at speed, in traffic!
