Explored this some more, and realized if I generate a weight for each row in the image based on the lightness, then travel through 128 points based on those weights, I can use that to draw sine waves later. #glsl #computergraphics #gamedev

I saw a video about machines that draw with a single line, so I wanted to try programming that myself. Slowly getting there, but I think I need to simulate CMYK. #glsl #computergraphics #gamedev

And as stated, drawing sine waves through the points lets them be made as one continuous line that in theory doesn't overlap. Tried a Hilbert curve too, but that doesn't look as good

And here are some colored ones. Working in CMYK is pretty interesting, would be cool to do more using that. #glsl #computergraphics #gamedev

Can't do this with both x and y position at once though, as then the weight is collected at a different position than it originally was intended for. Looks interesting though

I spent way too long on Hilbert curves before realizing I could just swap to a gaussian downsampler and have lines. Plus it makes it look a lot better when animating the waves #glsl #computergraphics #gamedev

CMYK did wonders! Had some trouble with figuring out how to handle black pixels and mixing the colors correctly, but the colored images turned out all right! Line-art is still struggling a bit, but I'm converting horizontal lines to Hilbert curves might fix that? #glsl #computergraphics #gamedev

I know for a fact that unity can sense when we're close to release, and purposefully corrupts random files in the library right before important builds so I have to spend several hours to investigating cryptic error messages with useless stacktraces gamedev is fun

Small #gamedev trick, let's say you have an effect happening over 10 ticks, and each tick it has some chance of doing something. Instead of trying to balance the chance of it happening every tick, define the chance of it happening at least once over 10 ticks and instead calculate the former.

Shadergraph has a tendency to create way too many variants, but this is the first time I've seen "million" as the suffix :| #unity #gamedev #indiedev

I just got the most cursed Youtube recommendation. There is just so much wrong with this that I don't know where to start.

The in Stars and Time wiki is now 2 years old, so I checked the analytics! Over 172k people have visited the wiki, viewing pages over 1.7 million times. Siffrin's Gallery is the most popular page on the wiki, followed by their info page, and lastly the front-page of the wiki itself. #isat

Almost 10 years ago I did some videos where I used genetic algorithms to recreate an image using only circles, and I got curious what a web version would look like. Here's the result running in real-time on the exact same 9-year old computer. Try it yourself: itr13.github.io/circles/ #dev

Here's what it got after 2.5 hours. At this point it's mostly just placing the tiniest circle possible on details.

Sometimes I feel like effort isn't enough to get good at something. You can try pouring time and time into something, but if you're not actively learning from it then you'll take a lot longer to learn it. My biggest gripe with schools is that they just give you a presentation and some homework (..)

Shen Comix@shenanigansen.bsky.social

instead of teaching you how to learn and structuring the lessons around that. I think the only time I heard about spaced repetition in school was once in 9th grade and nothing else. And even after that we've never been given anki cards or whatever, or dedicated time to review content. (..)

And that's probably just one way of learning that works for a lot of people. Ideally I'd love for each student to have time dedicated to them to find out how they learn best. But yea, not sure effort is the be all, end all if not done effectively.

Anyone else going to Tokyo Game Show? We have a booth at 05-N08, but I'll mostly be walking around :) Hoping to meet and talk with a lot of other developers! If there's any events happening in the evening to socialize at, please tell me! #gamedev #TGS2025
