Centre-right parties should not shift further to the right to capture far-right voters. Evidence from the 2025 German federal election shows that the CDU shifting further to the right to capture AfD voters would not only have left the CDU worse off, but politics would be pulled further to the right.

The good news is humans will be long gone by then anyway.

The estimated lifespan of the outer solar system has been downgraded from 100 billion years to just a few billion years, according to a study that probed “terminal instability” during the Sun’s death.

For Europeans, there is no path to sovereignty and independence from 🇺🇸🇷🇺🇨🇳 that goes outside the European Union. The far-right parties telling you otherwise are selling you a fantasy. There's a reason 🇺🇸🇷🇺🇨🇳 are amplifying their message.

Well, I've heard that it's a war about European security, freedom and democracy, so a better question would be: why should Ukrainians be the only ones fighting this war and being forced to do so against their will?

Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs called for Europe to use €200 billion in frozen Russian assets, arguing Moscow should pay for its attacks on Ukraine. “Why should EU citizens pay the bill for the war? The Russians should,” he said. #Ukraine

Very few things piss me off more than this inane obsession humans have formed around national borders. Humans have been roaming the planet for thousands of years, but now we've invented magical lines that can turn you less than human if you cross them in the "wrong" way.

I watched the whole, wretched thing and I can honestly say that the least historically accurate moment is when Calypso hand feeds Odysseus a single potato chip. YOU CAN'T EAT JUST ONE, GROK. Hopefully they'll correct this to a more accurate feasting on a 13oz bag in the final version.

of the dodgy odyssey takes, 'odysseus is meant to be a stoic badass unaffected by war' probably winds me up the most. in the text the king of the phaeacians correctly guesses odysseus is a veteran of the trojan war because he keeps bursting into tears whenever anyone mentions it

I'm pleased to share this new paper, "The myth of 'catch-up' development". The paper assesses trends in core-periphery inequality since 1960, and draws several main conclusions: 🧵https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13563467.2026.2659076

tandfonline.comThe myth of catch-up development: trends in core–periphery inequality from 1960 to 2023The conventional narrative in international development holds that poorer countries are “catching up” with richer countries through the process of capitalist growth. This paper assesses this claim ...

Unpopular opinion: assisted dying should be available to everyone.

With France now joining just five other EU countries that permit assisted dying, millions of Europeans still face radically different choices over how they can end unbearable suffering, depending purely on which border they live behind.

I'm sure all the Westerners cheering this on are doing so from the front line, having volunteered to fight.

Europe creates its own ICE, including home raids, deportations and indefinite detention in far away countries. There will be gross and large scale human rights violations. This is pure far right policy and anyone endorsing it does so knowingly. Don’t let anyone ever pretend they did not know.

The "AI" bros are stupid beyond belief. Otherwise, they would understand that their analogy is completely backwards. Dark matter and dark energy are phenomena that we have measured but cannot explain. They are not something that we cannot measure but desperately want to believe exists.

Two weeks ago it was unearthed that Germany frequently invites Taliban officials to government premises to check Afghan deportees and facilitate their return. This happens in secret for obvious reasons. This scandalous activity has created almost no media response or public outcry.

Actual AI researchers: 'Hallucinations' are inherent to LLMs. Strictly speaking, all their output is hallucinations; it just isn't obvious most of the time. Me, a genius: Have you guys tried putting 'do not hallucinate' in your prompts?

"Never hallucinate or make anything up." yes, you can just demand that the LLM not make errors that's definitely how the technology works

This is dark, but I think there's a darker twist to this: Schools, Foucault tells us, are always about making the kind of people that capital and state have uses for. In his days, that meant a disciplinary schooling system. One that got kids used to rigidly timed days, synchronous movements, etc. 1/
