working on modeling, esp for UVs and materials. orienteering compasses are transparent or translucent plastic so you can see a map behind, with a metal needle floating on clear oil. getting the look right took some doing - the shading is a process in blender that godot inherits as a material.

the compass has an "aim-down-sight" mode that dampens look input for finer movement, zooms the camera, and repositions the compass to give a better view down the sight. It also has a check bezel mode to look at the bezel face top-down.

the bezel isn't a circle, it's a cylinder poly with 32 sides. each side has a "UV" that defines what part of a texture image it renders. which is another way of saying each face covers 11.25 degrees of the compass. the UVs need to cover the correct distance top and bottom both, or the lines bend.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

a funny tbing about commuter trucks is how most have a hard cover over the bed that stats o 99.99% of tbe time and you use the tailgate to slide things into the covered bed space, thats just a trunk, reinvented from first principles

it is kinda funny that (outside of p niche diagnostic use like telling if kids in a very specific age range might have developmental delays, telling if old ppl in a specific age range might have cpgnitive impairment) thinking a high IQ makes you smart is a good predictor of someone being stupid.

i am interested* in the new call of duty, which is set in a fictional 2026 Korean war, like. it is very funny how Call of Duty is going to implicitly chastise North Korea. "They're all hyper-indoctrinated, militaristic zealots who think only of imperialist conquest!", bro...

one of my healthy lifestyle changes is i just get sushi and maki at my lunch place instead of the best deal, which is the tempura bento, and now days when i crave fried food they still say "same as usual?" (meaning sushi) and i just reflexively say "yes please". virtuous cycle.

anyway last one but if you are mad we voted for "decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities", i hope you are mad that this is already the Liberal government's immigration policy for Canada!

a common right wing problem: the furthest right 24% of ppl are ~50% of the ucp voters and more than that of its membership. the cpc also had to choose whether to expel these ppl and compete with them electorally, or be a far right party - look where the latter got them.

News 📰@some-news.bsky.social

Separatist leader Jeffrey Rath says they’ve built a movement of thousands of committed volunteers and will try to “take ownership” of Alberta’s governing party.

the problem with the furthest left 20% of ppl is they are educated and pragmatic so the left wing party knows theyll get the vote anyway. but at least theyre handsome with big muscles >:)

the down-ticket things ppl didnt vote on don't really matter. even before we consider the charter, Alberta can't pass laws that indirectly regulate immigration (federal head of power) or deny healthcare to newcomers (canada health act) or change federalism (bna).

of course its bad that we might do it and need to have it struck. the thing about proof of citizenship is stupid (only citizens can be electors, only electors can vote) but making voting stupider is likely to happen ofc.

our institutions aren't neutral things; they're tools, they're instruments of power, most of the time being held or controlled by the powerful. protecting their integrity, therefore, isn't neutral either. using a tool to do good when a rule says you aren't supposed to isn't bad - the rule is bad.

in law school the most hardcore The Sacred Profession, Its Noble Practitioner guy was a vicious anti-healthcare libertarian, if you want an example to help you think about who that mystical thinking possibly serves.

it's honestly kind of wild to watch 50+ years of "noooo the coups and corporate malfeasance weren't part of the plannnnn we were just trying to promote democracyyyyy" liberal revisionism get one-shotted by the stupidest man on the planet

i watched Love Is Blind and this season all the women just immediately told each other everything that happened on all their dates and it made it really hard for the guys who were being shitty. mostly these ppl get all the bad aspects of a dating scene concentrated but that was legit better than irl

to the extent the mainstream left/right divide is the urban/rural divide, that distinction itself is mostly artificial. we're a cities society. ppl consider us a rural, cowboy province, but fully >50% of us live in the cities of yeg or yyc. if you include their suburbs and exurbs it's like 66%.

like, they wouldn't have put the rural places there if the cities weren't here first. they wouldn't build farms if there wasn't someplace to get nails - today farms need much more, costcos and f150 dealers, long list. the rural is enabled by what the city provides and therefore is an extension of it

theres a similar number of traffic fatalities and murders in our city every year, and unlike murders we could prevent basically all the traffic deaths, like, for sure; the tools and techniques are tested and proven and we already have them available.

an annoying thing for shooter games is that most guns that need to eject a spent casing before firing again have the ejection port on the right, to deflect hot brass away from right handed users (90% of users). this means if you model/animate the action faithfully, the player won't see that work.

thought all lunch about how when we find out about the nice stuff that bosses and rich guys have (or their fancy food or their wasteful hobbies) we get mad at the nice stuff, instead of the fact that it's only for rich guys. fucked up. we need to believe that progress is possible again.

not the main point but people in the replies here are very mad about the existence of luxury sneakers. what is the price point of an item of clothing where it becomes morally permissible to rob someone lol

as you watch this tomfoolery go down at the polls and think "damn, they really got away with alot of systemic changes to rig the vote as best they could", here is something to take heart. the process is ultimately supervised by our federal parliament and it is empowered to look thru bullshit.

parliament can hear any evidence it wants - so the "clear will of the people" created by procedural artifact can be rebutted by evidence of voter suppression, supported by consistent opinion polling, etc. parliament will look through the actual number to ask if they reflect a clear will to separate

we have a parliament that's against it rn; but a conservative gov't would be looking for an out too! so yeah this is the sort of bullshit they need to do to make 20% of people look like a majority and they 100% would do it (are doing it) to get through that hoop. but it all comes out in the wash.

if this were a real referendum on separatism (or if it were retconned later) it's essentially a referendum on amending canada's constitution. our constitution says how it may be amended. canada's federal parliament and most of the provinces' legislatures have to agree and pass mirror amendment laws.

under the federal clarity act, parliament won't even consider this unless there's been a clear referendum showing a clear will of the people to separate. to decide this, it'll become a quasi-court and have a hearing on this matter that it'll decide on by resolution.

a silly "department of war" thing here in alberta is we renamed our provincial court the "court of justice" in 2023, and we changed the title of its "judges" to "justices" (courts of inherent jurisdiction call judges "justices" in canada. provincial court is a lower statutory court so it used judge)

but the result is where you'd previously have talked about the judges in provincial court, you now have to say "a justice of the court of justice". which is v unpleasant.

the thing is, nobody knew they wanted star wars before they saw it. nobody had a latent yearning they were vocalizing in inner monologue alone for space samurai/wizards to fight nazis. people do not know everything they want or everything they like; discovering these things about yourself is a joy!

maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

if you live in the suburbs or the exurbs or the country like, fucking stay there and let people in the city run the city. you get the benefit of the city being there without contributing. what a sweet deal, you get like, an airport and a pro hockey team, w/o the work. so let us do the fucking work.

it's very funny how we should have direct democracy for the reactionaries and extremists, but not to like, to let people elect a local government. but i am heartened that letting rural voters dictate how big cities run should hurt them in the one place that matters next year, calgary.

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted. I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

its hard to be optimistic about the future when the present is at its most backwards. but fascism is the death rattle of this world order, its decay in excess. not an aberration, but its contradictions sharpened to their finest points. they invoke fascism out of weakness, not strength.

one of the worst things about being a legislative planner is that people often want to make a law that says "the government cares about this thing" instead of actually doing something about that thing, which is both a bad law and obviously doesn't solve the problem

but compared to the portfolios and projects i could have, being the legislative planner for the department that does not want to make legislation is about as good as it gets. lol. lmao.

a challenge in making a simulation is that i set the in-game speed of a boat to something that feels nice to control, but i have a game-distance to "real world" units conversion that makes this too fast, so i have to decide if i fix the speed, or the units.

i set the game units based on the size of the boat models so it is not easier one way or the other but honestly mb the friction of the boat going slow is good, gives it a feeling of weight
