CONTROLLED CHAOS My first long-read is out. On Newcastle United 2.0: analysis of the start to the season, the intelligence of Sean Steur and Nico Gonzalez, Joe Willock’s resurgence, Rory Finneran at Notts County and a bit of vibe scouting on Martin Baturina. Enjoy! 🔗👇 #NUFC

🧵In Mathias Jaissle’s pre match press conference, @CharIieBennett asked a great chain of questions with one in particular referring to Newcastle’s vulnerability to transitions. Jaissle response was Newcastle need to be stronger in the counter press and “lock opponents in” #NUFC

Runs beyond/in behind can create a large gap between Palace’s midfield and defence due to the lack of mobility in Palace’s midfield, Brighton used it to score a goal and we used similar runs to help create both of our goals. #NUFC

I loved our second goal on Sunday and Jaissle would have been particularly pleased because of the nature of our counter press. The ball loss happens after a failed cut back from Barnes but the reaction was brilliant. #NUFC

We were able to eventually secure possession as Nico barges Wharton out of his way. The lay off from Murphy was smart and well timed. The runs beyond from Dedic was brilliant as well as Willock and Osula to create that gap which i mentioned pre game. #NUFC

Hornicek was motm for me. Such a solid performance. Made a huge save early on then seen out the game with speed of his line and dominating his box. Well earned clean sheet for him today. Top #nufc

Palace are crap and Sage will be lucky to be in charge for their next game but that was a big game for us and a game we needed a result from and we got it. I really really hope this is a turning point in our season. #nufc

Our big money signings from last season have to step up (Elanga, Wissa, Ramsey). I was never going to put too much pressure on the likes of Willock and Murphy because we all know their limitations. Early signs were good. Drop off from Wissa has been hugely disappointing though. #nufc

⚫ Youngest average PL XI 👶 ⚪ 25y 75d - down from 27y 65d in 25-26 📉 ⚫ 5 x 25yo+ regulars 🔎 ⚪ "Brave way" 🤔 ⚫ Star dust lost, do seniors left have enough quality? ⚖️ 🔞🧓 #NUFC have the PL's youngest side - but why that doesn't tell the whole story about current squad:

That gap is a big worry. Because when we make an individual error in our press like Joelinton does here, the punishment can be so much more severe. #nufc

Kev Lawson@editkev.football

Same in defence too. Clear shots conceded jumping up so high is a a mega worry and a clear reflection of the gap between press/defence that teams are accessing too often. Similar story on set pieces in defence too. #NUFC

In any OOP situation, you need compactness. Horizontal and vertical. Our press is not vertically compact; the space between the front and back of our press is too big. #NUFC

That mistake from J7 creates a chain, with Pardo leaving AWB -> Miley 1v2 -> AWB then receives in a lot of space and we are now 3v3 defending a transition. But that gap means the ground our midfield have to cover is absolutely massive. Miley is 1v2 for this entire move, which is crazy. #NUFC

It's moved in the right direction ove rthe past few weeks, but #NUFC being this low down on xG difference ain't a good thing.

It’s funny though because we’ve got a winger who scored 16 goals last season but for some reason our attackers don’t want to give him the fucking ball!!! #nufc

Our only shot on target came from a centre back #nufc

Haven’t had time to post my thoughts from Monday so I’m going to comply them into a little thread here. Jaissle clearly didn’t mentally prepare the team well enough and the first 10 minutes showed. Awful. #nufc

For me, I didn’t see bad football from us but I saw a bad team. Now there are plenty of reasons to why this could be (young squad, coach etc). So I don’t think there is a need to overreact too much to this result but factually it is a poor one and we need to be mentally stronger in games. #nufc

Second half was poor but Willock injury did mean we couldn’t bring our momentum into the second half. We were forced to 10 and had to invite pressure, they won a throw in and we didn’t defend it well enough with another poor clearance and it’s a great strike. I do have sympathy for them. #nufc

Team didn’t react very well to this and again goes back to a mentality problem, it took a Botman wonder strike to get us back to our first half form. But we keep shooting ourselves in the foot this season. Their third goal basically killed the game. It was a shocker. #nufc

Next 35 he coached a great game, clear patterns of play, good use of the “up back and through”. Jaissle coached us into the final third on multiple occasions, players didn’t deliver for him. We dominated though and should have been winning. #nufc

The story of Cavan Sullivan is a story about American soccer idols, and by extension, a story about American soccer itself, both the good and the bad. 20 years after Freddy Adu, American soccer has its prodigy. For @scoutedftbl.com, the tales we weave about Cavan and all that came before (🎁 link):

Was watching a YT video earlier on Wirtz and saw this viz. I see this and immediately think “god he works hard off the ball” but Steur does move so much when #NUFC have possession, to create different passing angles and move the opposition around. Think this is a testament to his all round game.

So the first half of this weekend's game provided a bit more clarity about #NUFC 's intentions with the ball - which was welcome. One thing that has become a repeated pattern is the use of the half space across from either wing by both Winger & Full Backs.

We learnt a lot about Steur’s character yesterday. 18 yrs old and mad a huge error. He regathers himself, played the rest of the game making 4 progressive passes, 2 passes into pen area and 1 shot assist. To be this positive with the ⚽️ after a mistake at 18 is very encouraging. #nufc

One aspect of Willock’s game, which is hugely underrated, is his strength. For me, this is partly the reason why Jaissle opts for Willock in the "10" because he loves the counter movements between him and Wissa. 1/ #nufc

Sadly, as was the story with Murphy’s game vs Millwall, the final action was pretty poor, but this came from Willock’s run in behind and centre-forward-type strength to hold off a big EFL centre-back. 5/ #nufc

A good example here against Millwall. We launch a long ball where Millwall have a 2v1 on Willock. Two big EFL centre-backs are always tough to deal with. Willock battles so well, keeps his balance and gets first contact on the ball. 3/ #nufc

There’s no excuses for not winning tonight but it’s been pretty obvious that this team is still “a work in progress” We’re conceding way too many shots at the moment. For me that is coming from: #nufc

▫️Decision making on when and when not to press. We’re getting it wrong quite often. ▫️Lack of leadership/organisation on the pitch ▫️Tactical stuff, like Liverpool using central rotations to create gaps in midfield and Bournemouth using beyond movements to create space on the edge of the box. #nufc
