One of the things that I know about the timing of my Substack newsletter is that, if I send it during the day, I don't get any immediate unsubscribes because fewer people look at it immediately because they're at work! Little victories! 😂

Indian waiters are consistently among the very best I've come across anywhere in the world for politeness, efficiency and kindness. Given a choice, I doubt even British teenagers would want to be served by British teenagers. Rupert Lowe is the pied piper of thick racists.

It is difficult to fully explain how significant this is to the region and to the EU more widely.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!

Serbia: The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS-EPP) has admitted defeat in today's parliamentary elections. The Student List (SL-*) has won a majority of votes. #Serbia #Srbija #Izbori2026

CRTA@crta.bsky.social

Election day was marked by obstruction of polling boards' work. Ballot photographing was recorded at 48% of polling stations, UV lamp failures at 30% and voting without valid IDs at 8%. Violent incidents increased and riot-control vehicles were spotted in Belgrade. #Elections2026

It's gonna be a long few hours. Send good thoughts in the direction of Serbia, everyone!

Serbia: Polling stations across the country have now closed in today's national parliament elections. There will be no exit polls. Non-governmental organisations will provide a parallel count. #Serbia #Srbija #Izbori2026

Police is defending criminals in the city of #Lazarevac. They came with car full of bats and other blunt objects and their intention was to attack peaceful citizens. But, people from this town seized their weapons and surrounded them. Then police came to protect criminals.

...and the same will likely be called upon again to act if the Student List genuinely has a breakthrough tonight. As such, do not expect a Hungary-style change in government in Serbia even if the opposition clearly wins; think Pakistan, or Egypt.

Both also celebrated the assassination of the country’s one genuine, senior reformist figure, PM Zoran Djindjic, in 2003. Djindjic was killed by elements of Serbia’s expansive and influential security apparatus, who are connected to the country’s likewise powerful organized crime underground...

c. Serbian politics remains dominated by the dark, brutal horrors of the 90s. Vucic and his long-time No. 2 Dacic both served under Milosevic and remain beholden to his core project; i.e. authoritarianism at home, militarism and expansionism abroad (e.g. Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro).

b. A close finish between the two blocs – Vucic’s SNS et al and the Student List – will mean protracted instability in the country. Violence in the streets is quite likely, again primarily directed by the regime as we have already seen in and around Belgrade today.

...which the regime will further try to derail by delaying the count. A significant number of invalidated ballots will be one of the clearest signs of significant regime-direct fraud. It may take days to have real clarity on the outcome.

A few basic points as we await results from Serbia later today: a. It is unlikely that we will have a clear winner tonight. Turnout is looking impressive, and Serbia’s ballot counting is slow at the best of times. High turnout also suggests large mobilization by the opposition...

This could be Vučić's last hurrah. The regime is on its last legs. I've got everything crossed that this is the end.

VBG 🇷🇸@256bit.bsky.social

This is not good at all. As we are breaking all turnout records regarding our elections, Vučić is setting #Belgrade under siege. Center of my city is in blackout, police is everywhere, #Ćacilend is again being filled with criminals. #Serbia #elections

Thank you, again, to Ukraine for defending Europe's freedom. Not only are you heroes, you're also bloody good warriors! May these figures continue to rise until the remaining invaders go back to where they came from. Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦

To be fair, Trump is visionary. If, by visionary, you mean hallucinanting.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio: “Here's something else Trump doesn't get credit for: he's visionary. “He imagines what people say is impossible. He thinks things that people say, "We can't do it because that's never been done before," and then he achieves them.”

This is your reminder that, in the UK, clocks go back one hour this weekend. In Britain, since 1916, the clocks go forward in spring (normally March, and back in autumn (normally October). However, in June 2016, the UK voted to turn the clocks back 100 years.

For those who are keeping count, we are currently within the bounds of a category 1 hurricane here in Finistère. This is the weakest hurricane. Which is a bit like having a mild kick in the testicles. It's still unpleasant, can do serious damage and is something you'd rather avoid. #StormAusten

If Putin believes this and is still happy to murder people he considers 'his own ', that should ring plenty of alarm bells telling you what he would happily do to the rest of us who aren't 'his people'. Psychopaths gonna psychopath.

NOELREPORTS@noelreports.com

❗️Putin says Russia is ready for negotiations on Ukraine, while claiming Russians and Ukrainians are "one people" and that territories lost by Ukraine are "historic Russian lands." He says the goal of talks with the US and Ukraine would be a final peace and guarantees for Russia's security. #Russia

Tonight, to distract us from #StormArsehole (officially #StormAusten - starts with an A, first of the season), we are having snacks and films and board games until the inevitable loss of electricity.
