Just published in Historical Methods: Chris Minns & coauthors link Ontario marriage to historical census records to show married women & men had similar rates of intergenerational mobility 1871-1901. Unexpectedly, the inclusion of more false positive links does not bias the mobility estimates. OA

Elsevier introduces required interactive visualizations written in proprietary language to be placed behind a paywall

John Holbein@johnholbein1.bsky.social

It amazes me that, in the year of our Lord 2026, academic journals still haven’t figured out how to let authors include interactive visualizations.

I think basically all local residential zoning laws should be eliminated. Build as much and as densely as you want. But also there should be a short and vetted list of historically appropriate colors you're allowed to paint your Victorian house cc my neighbors

I don't have it yet, but there's an econ history paper in these transcripts or transcripts like them (that we can now turn into textual data at the cost of pennies per hour)

Open ASR models with speaker diarization are now fast and cheap: I diarized 174 hours of Apollo 11 mission audio (the real July 1969 NASA tapes) for $9.46 with a 0.9B open model. Search it, hear any moment on the original tape: huggingface.co/spaces/davan...

Men still out-resource women on nearly everything known to predict voting: income, jobs, political interest. Except education, where women have pulled way ahead. @cohodes.bsky.social and I show how the education gap explains about half of why young women now outvote young men. 🔗 Link: bit.ly/4wwcd21

Another MA state legislative session, another abject failure to do anything about MA’s housing shortage. Down to the smallest of small ball—municipal opt-in for allowing housing on religious properties (Yes In God’s Backyard) and commercial to residential conversions.

Referee reports supplied per year should be a required line on academic CVs

John Holbein@johnholbein1.bsky.social

I just handled a manuscript where we had to invite 17 referees to get 2 reviews. I used to wonder why peer review takes so long. Multiple factors are at play. But editors face a Herculean task of getting reviewers to accept and then deliver in the current moment.

On February 14, 1876, Bell & Gray each filed for a telephone patent. Such collisions were once routine — up to 1 in 20 patents triggered an "patent interference." Over the next 150 years, that rate fell by more than 98%. In a new paper, we explain why — and what it might cost.

How light traffic would be everyday if we had congestion pricing:

Ari Ofsevit@ofsevit.bsky.social

Is anyone going back to work today? No traffic on the Mystic River Bridge at 0800. (Other highway have just minimal slowdowns.) The 66 bus is running 7 minutes ahead of schedule towards Nubian, and 14 ahead toward Harvard!

Greater Boston equivalent: NIMBY mayors and city councils should be forced to go house hunting Mayor who bought his SFH house in 1991 for $380k: A house in Newton costs what?!?!?

RESPECT Every politician should be doing this. Mayor Coffman has spent every Friday night since February sleeping at Aurora, Colorado’s homeless center, serving breakfast in the morning, and learning firsthand what works and what doesn’t.
