RESPECT Every politician should be doing this. Mayor Coffman has spent every Friday night since February sleeping at Aurora, Colorado’s homeless center, serving breakfast in the morning, and learning firsthand what works and what doesn’t.

💯❣️ when I went to Fukuoka, Japan as an exchange student for my sophomore year, I quickly concluded that if everyone did this in middle school, the whole concept of “war” would vanish, because you learn that it’s not “wrong “ to be “different “.

I still remember struggling with grade 11 math. Having a Chinese exchange student show up and joke about how we thought this was called an education system. He spoke better English than I did, and had already mastered calculus. WTF China. Our well funded school was like a 6 month vacation for him.

There’s an international summer camp I did when I was in high school called CISV that is based on this exact premise. Sadly, it’s shrinking because the world has become more isolating recently.

I was so lucky to have a father who taught me different is not wrong-way back in the 60's. He was also a feminist and bought me chemistry sets and RF helicopters and planes.

I've thought for a long time that the US should instate mandatory one year service at age 18...not to the military, but around the US, and that one would work in areas unlike where they were raised, and with diverse crews. We need community in this country desperately, serving others creates bonds.

I agree. I think it is good to encourage kids to take a gap year and volunteer for some humanitarian aid agency domestically or internationally. Gives on a different perspective of the world. I was an exchange student in high school and it broadened my view plus learned another language

39 years on, I'm still in touch with my French penfriend. We've now both retired, so planning on meeting up again soon. I learnt some people still had outhouses, how to eat artichokes, and that I don't like Galloise. I also learnt we are less different and more similar.

I give the guy respect for doing it once. His commitment to this though is completely unparalleled in today's society and definitely should be a story told wide and far.

The unhoused overlap with people with mental health and substance use challenges. But also shit happens!Politicians' priorities are stabs through the heart over and over. And everyday people's presumptions may be even worse. They're real regular people. Hear their stories and they'd get it.

It might be naive- but ya know how the Mormons will go out on a mission, some place away from home where they teach strangers their thing, lol? I would like to imagine the US having like a sort of service-related corps that focuses on having kids/young adults go out

….into the country (maybe rural to urban- &vice versa-with a stint in a nat’l park?idk) and just experience volunteering in some useful way- with an offer to pay for a college education afterwards. A way for everyone to have more skin the game. More pride in their neighboring cities & states🤷🏻‍♀️ lame?

After watching Coffman in Colorado for many years, I’m going to call it performative. My guess is looking for what to cut. I’d like to be proven wrong.

First this photo went Coffman its AI generated. Second the only MAGA issue the deeply conservative Coffman has pushed back against was gangs from Venezuela taking over aurora and eating cats. Otherwise he is fully vested. Here is Coffman

I spent some time with homeless ppl both those living under an overpass bridge on Miami Beach & at "Tent City" in Ft. Lauderdale. This was an article in Street Smarts (Which were provided to homeless ppl to sell on the streets)

So he takes a bed from a homeless person instead of just coming in in the morning. Hm. Interesting. The intention is there but not thot out [Before you come at me, I've been homeless 2x, & its my philanthropy choice. Shelters have limited spots & once beds are taken, everyone else is turned away]

Not good intentions. Catholic charities and rescue mission and salvation army in Denver all operate on a for profit basis. They actually actively work together to break up couples so as to get more money from domestic abuse charities, then spit the people out

in order to get them exposed to drug abuse, especially fentanyl and meth, and into treatment programs that end up only supplying narcan; continuing the cycle of abuse and enlarging the homeless problem further.

Wherever!!! Just check his policies about housing, health care, immigration. He did the same thing a few years ago,,, but instead of doing in his city he did that in Denver,,, and he was undercover!!!

This should be a job requirement. I think every politician should have to live on welfare 6 months a year and receive no help from the outside, every year they serve they should have to live the way many of their constituents live

Pity it wasn’t a condition on being elected that ALL politicians had to Do this at least once every four months. so they know exactly how it is for those they are representing. Keep Them grounded, in touch

It reminds me of when Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne lived in a Southside project apartment and only ate what she could buy with food stamps for a week or month, no car, just the bus. She was from a wealthy family and wanted to see how the

It's a complex issue and even after sleeping there, he thinks putting 30 day limits on services without "strings", is a good idea, but actual experienced people who have successful programs say: Nope, give us more resources.

Unlike most mayor's, including mine, who form exploratory committees to come up w/ideas This Republican is finding out 1st hand BRAVO! Hope he has an epiphany that there are many who work hard & still end up homeless

Smh. Honestly. Think about it. If hes that committed to volunteering, do you really think he wouldn’t make sure it isn’t needed by another? Why be so quick to find something wrong with a good deed?

No, you need to "think about it". You are making a helluva lot of assumptions here. No person who is there to volunteer to help out and try to do good, is going to be cozying up in a cot while a homeless person stands there without a place to sleep.

. "Trump accused of showing ‘complete indifference’ to Americans’ living costs after cancelling housing bill signing. President was due to sign deal aimed at making life more affordable for Americans but shelved event. Approximately 10.6% of the US population are living below the poverty line." .

I have respect for what he's trying to do, but 4 days a month is NOT going to get him to understand 10 years of homelessness, because people don't give shit about anybody else. I have a solution to the fucking homelessness but nobody wants to listen!! Want to solve homelessness. CALL ME!

OMG, really? That's a joke. ANYBODY can do that. That's like a vacation to most people . TRY living outside in the elements, standing in line to get in at 5pm starting at 3pm because the line will be around the block. Then tell those left in line that couldn't get in there's no more room.

We spend an awful lot of time focused on the politicians who are useless (& yes, there ARE a lot of them), but we're not spending enough time looking at those who are sincerely trying their best to see what needs to be done & then act. Thanks to those who actually serve.

Yet in Lakewood, homeless navigators and their cop escorts threaten and harass and gaslight non addict homeless people to get them to enter their homeless shelter on Colfax... What a difference a few miles makes

Fairs Coffman is anti-abortion opposes income tax opposes requiring states to adopt federal education standards opposes the federal regulation of greenhouse gas opposes gun control supports repealing the Affordable Care Act opposes same-sex marriage and is openly anti-immigrant and racist

Halfway through university, I quit and backpacked across Europe with a friend for 3 months. That experience changed my life. When I went back to university, my grades improved.

When you sit in a room with people who don't know how the system works, you won't find ways to create a better system. Successful businessmen find solutions from talking with the workers, not upper management.

This is a ridiculous stunt. As a leader, he should talk to the people running the place and the residents and really listen to what they have to say and follow through to make changes. Sleeping on a cot changes nothing but makes it seem like you care.

Coffman, a republican, served 5 terms in the US House. He voted with the gop nearly 92% of the time, including 96% with Trump. He opposes same-sex marriage, gun control and the ACA. He supports Big Oil, ICE, racist birther theories and voted for Trump's 2017 tax cuts for the ultra wealthy.

This is simply performative. He is mayor of the most racially and culturally diverse city in CO, yet his policies favor industry over his constituents. If more people in Aurora voted, he would be defeated. He is not a mayor or man to be celebrated because of one symbolic but empty measure.

Can confirm all of this. I was very happy when he lost his congressional reelection bid. The man is a smug bastard and I have no doubt that the "what works" part of this performative exercise will be that "homelessness is better tackled by private charities rather than with public funds."

We defeated the MAGA city council last year with fairly high turnout. We can defeat him too. Why are you saying that the people of the most culturally and racially diverse city in Colorado don't vote.

After spending months visiting the shelter he learned that homelessness is caused by economic factors. Before this he just assumed they were all druggies too lazy to get help. He isn’t changing his policy, tho. That very shelter forces anti-drug classes to go up to higher tiers with more support.

Every single advocacy group backs housing-first. This shelter is an explicit rebuke of housing first that he wants to “take international”. And then the recent news is that it pays less than minimum wage for “classes” where visitors clean the shelter.

Anyone who voted to reduce SNAP should have to live on SNAP for a month. No cheating. Start with zero food and just use SNAP all month long. They will be crying from too much ramen.

I can't imagine ANY of the orange cult serving just ONE meal to the homeless let alone sleeping like one of them. Nor can I imagine Trump donating just one dollar out of his billions. I despise the shameless orange creature. I have one nerve left and his dreadful cackly voice is yanking on it 😞

I've been in a homeless shelter. For real, not pretend. Maybe other shelters run differently. But if the mayor was helping with breakfast, then the staff knew that he was not homeless. Shelters are terrified volunteers might be harmed by a street person. They keep the groups physically segregated.

Most of the people at a shelter are good people. Residents know they can be kicked out. This keeps the rare conflicts tamped down. As the new guy, other residents offered me help and advice. There was no hazing. When you are in survival mode there's no room for that kind of crap.

But shelter staff are not always so restrained. I listened to one staff member brag hourly about his girlfriend, never missing a chance to mock residents for having to depend on masturbation for relif. Physical threats were frequent. He liked to mumble "I'm gonna punch you out" every 5 minutes.

At first, I thought that he was putting up a tough front to maintain discipline. But no one challenged his authority. And none of the other staff seemed to need the tough hombre facade. He just liked having authority to prop up his limp ego. He never got tired of playing a game he couldn't lose.

This is a step in the right direction. It’s very hard to impossible to “fix” a problem if you don’t understand it. Now, do jail. If politicians had to spend a week in jail, I bet their perceptions would change.

Dude. Really?? Guy is doing a good thing but hey! Let’s find something wrong and criticize him anyway! You really think he’d take a needed bed?

Did he bring his own cot, then? Why would they have a cot just for the mayor and nobody else? Maybe Friday nights are usually slow idk It's good that he's stepping into the shoes, you know? Even if it's just briefly. He should live there full time for a week or 2, though, to truly understand.

It's not performative when he's there week after week and helping with meals, etc, as well as following thru trying to help people.

Homelessness is a sign that the system isn’t working. I stayed at one for two weeks until I found a job, bought a tent and shook the dust of the place off. Many staying there consider it their home and wanted nothing better as they drank themselves there. I worked hard, played hard but worked
