Fines should always be greater than any profit gained through illegal business practices. If they can pay a fine and still make a profit, then the fine is too low. A fine that's lower than the profit gained is just a cost of doing business, not a deterrent against lawbreaking.

Got a scam call from "Visa and MasterCard", pressed 1 to get an operator as it's my habit (I love wasting their time). Operator asked "How can I help you?" and I replied "You called me." He asked what the recording was that I heard, and I asked if he knew what company he works for. He hung up.

The Tesla Cybertruck failed Australian road safety standards and won't be sold here. Studies reveal their roofs crumple when drop bears fall on them from overhanging trees.

I know how sensible it is to keep cats confined to your property and desexed as soon as it's medically safe, but I do kind of miss having the occasional random litter of kittens show up. Between the late 90s and early 2010s we had three litters from two of our cats. We made sure they all got homes.

I think Trump drank from the wrong grail.

😳 here's pictures taken today of Trump's right and left hands. Both are looking really bad, and he's using makeup on each of them to try to mask it (note how the left one is now looking just as nasty as the right one -- that's new) (Aaron Schwartz/Getty)

After writing this column, Kogan.com got in touch upset that I didn't point out Kogan subsidiaries did pay tax (assume they mean company tax, they didn't say). Was happy to add it and provide the the full context. We're talking about $1.8bn revenue, about $20m tax... thepoint.com.au/off-the-char...

I’m in the Full Federal Court in 11 days seeking a precedent preventing secrecy on the performance of any publicly funded project and allowing the public to have near real time access to cost and schedule info. Who’s against me - every player in the Snowy 2.0 debacle #FOI #auspol

$25B direct cost. $6B share purchase cost. $6B transmission line cost. A $37B total for a project sold to the public at $2B . It’s a huge economic debacle delivered by LNP/ALP dunces and fat cat bureaucrats. And no one is held to account. #fail #auspol

A truly great understated actor, who could convey a huge amount of nuance with a facial expression.

Skerrit, a prolific actor with dozens of screen credits, was also an Emmy winner for his lead role on the cult favorite series “Picket Fences.”

Vision Quest is really good so far, and a great continuation of Wandavision and Agatha All Along. This is what Marvel's TV projects should be doing more of: diving deeply into philosophical questions of identity and meaning. Leave the big action setpieces for the feature films.

Wow, what a mess (no pun intended). Personally, I couldn't imagine leaving a hotel room or a B&B in anything other than a clean and orderly state, because I'm not a barbarian. Fascinating to see Airbnb wedge itself like this, though. Funny how tech companies keep running into easily foreseen issues.

Airbnb hosts are melting down over a new policy banning them from making guests complete tasks that “would typically be performed by a cleaner,” like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” Read the full story: buff.ly/GHU32S5

Think about it. You're preparing to launch a service that blends hotels, B&Bs, sharehouses, and guest houses. What questions would you ask yourself before even considering bringing it to market? I feel like "Who is responsible for cleaning up before a guest leaves?" would be question number one.

For years they've muddled through with mandatory cleaning fees that nobody likes, end-of-stay cleanup lists of dubious enforceability, and relying on the threat of negative reviews to keep clients in line. Clearly, nothing is working. They're trying to lay track while the train is in motion.

Really, that's the recurring story of technology and capitalism: come up with an idea, see dollar signs, rush it to market, then sooner or later trip over an intractable problem that should have been anticipated well before launch, but there was no time because money now please.

This is repugnant.

A reminder, Russia was responsible for the shooting down on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 which killed 27 Australians. And this is our AUKUS partner with whom according to Richard Marles we have "shared values"

"Trump’s actual purpose was plainly not to increase US diesel supplies, or otherwise lower prices, but rather to make clear his intention to definitively change sides & become Russia’s wartime ally — & to undermine the sanctions regime against Russia the US worked so hard to implement over 5 years."

Harrison Ford came up with Han replying "I know" and Laurence Kasdan loved it. George Lucas, however, HATED it and fought them on it for ages. It went on to become one of the most loved and quoted lines in the entire series.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

My favourite came out of a negative experience. A gang of right wing politicians and journalists used public senate enquiry submissions from me and my wife to try to politically wedge the Australian Greens. We're nobody famous, but we were mentioned in Murdoch's vanity rag every day for a week.

It was a pretty horrible experience, but out of the blue we got a call from the PA of our local Greens candidate, saying her boss had asked her to check in with us and make sure we were okay. We were fine, just angry, but she gave us her number in case we needed support in future. Very kind.
