Unfortunately people dont gain magical sefl reflective insight into the moral shortcomings they were raised with just because they turn 18. People don’t change, they are CHANGED. This isn’t a personal responsibility thing. This is a social responsibility thing.

sadly to say... the adult brain is so hardwired... it is near impossible to shock it enough to rewire.... I mean it might be possible if you spiked the drinking water and pop...etc... with enough LSD to blast new neuropathyways in their heads

Straight up entitled hateful losers…. And then there are those who feed off all this mess and buy elections to continue spreading their hate and keeping everyone impoverished

It's way easier to find cohorts who won't berate, hence the rise of Trump, who forgives all sins. The only way negative feedback works is when it is part of a plan for civil war.

Lots of things our parents or other adults did we couldn't control. In hindsight, it had an impact that gave us the mindset for those ways and things not to be repeated by us in our adulthood. On point and word up. Break the cycle, choose to be better, and or to do better 😌 you choose your destiny

If you want all this 'unlearning', start caring how it is learned. Or what it amounts to. Because simply calling it evil or fascism is stopping where it becomes interesting. Approach with an interest to understand, because we rarely do. #empathy

One of the reasons we canceled our NYTimes subscription is because they employed David French whose soul job at the times was to try to convince everyone that the southern U.S. isn’t the treasonous confederate shithole it appears to be to everyone else on the planet. We eventually got sick of it!

It’s a progression Your parents should have aspired to be better than your grandparents You should be rising up above them And investing in the next generations to fly higher than you ever did

We're adults now - with free choice. If your parents taught you all this bs, UNLEARN it. Choose to do better.

It's the other way around. Far from dismissing it, I think the message stands on its own merits. I don't wish the f-bombs gone because I'm a prude - I have dropped a few myself - but because they distract from a solid statement. I realized later I sounded like a prude, but really I'm just an editor.

It's not the problem, but it doesn't help, either. This message sounds better, more carefully thought out, without f-bombs. I don't mind four-letter words when they're called for, but here they suggest a level of anger that doesn't match the construction of a persuasive argument.

I was raised to not be racist (In fact, my teachers and other middle aged women wouldn't shut up about it) but relearned my racism through simply observing black people IRL.

My dad was a product of his time. My mom was prejudiced against Asians and non-christians, or even people with different kinds of christian faith. But I grew up around people of every colour and different beliefs. I learned that just because things were done one way doesn’t mean you have to follow.

I tell my kids when they turn 30 that whatever they are is now them, not their Mom or Dad. They've had plenty of years to grow out of our biases and ideals. "Try to keep the good stuff."

My dad raised me to be a right wing Catholic, a racist, a homophobe, and an anti-Semite. I'm now a lefty atheist, polyamorous bisexual, and a proud enemy of bigotry in all its forms, with wonderful friends from many cultural heritages. Unlearning stuff can be hard, painful work. Worth it.

Same. Apparently it’s hard or rare to come from extreme racist bigots and become an activist for the better ways

I'll add – for others' benefit, because I'd guess you know this – that the unlearning starts with looking inside to see the fundamental beliefs that lead to all of these. Chief among them IMO is the idea that there should *ever* be disparities in what rights people have or how the law treats them .🧡

Whether it's because of some physical feature, where you're born, what beliefs you have, and so on, that belief is just wrong. Unlearning that is most of the battle. We should use differences in positive ways, to celebrate or to help, but never to push the already less privileged even further down.

It’s like shoplifting. You may have the thought, the urge, even the desire to do it. But if you’ve any moral compass at all,,, you don’t do it.

It’s not dragging shoplifters. It’s highlighting moral decisions. Steal or don’t steal. Lie or don’t lie. Allow racism (hate) to be a guiding force in your life or don’t. It’s a conscious decision

People are intellectually and emotionally lazy. Change is hard work, knowing better means taking responsibility and that's just so haaaaaaaard. Too many people get a kick out of crossing lines, breaking things, raising a row. Something wrong in the genetic code?

Thank you. This is how, as a child, before I was 7, my parents taught me all of this with one simple question, do you want that behavior done to you because someone doesn't like something about you. It's a simple lesson. Old school blue collar Catholics! Please vote blue for everyone.

My 77-year-old dad told me this summer that he realized he was raised in a racist bigoted home and he is trying to do better by checking his thoughts. #hope

It's not a polarizing statement. Or at least it shouldn't be. We need to be the adults in the room and get the temper tantrum throwing toddler and his enablers out of our government.

Same. Raised in the 50s....it's been a lifetime journey. Not saying I'm done, either. But I'll keep unraveling all the generational baggage until I die.

I was raised by people raised in the 50s, we are akin through the transitive property πŸ˜‚ There’s always work to be done! We should always be trying to improve. People like you give me hope for all 🫑

I raised my son with what I was learning to unravel so he is way better than I am. But, he is always doing the work, too. And, that makes my heart sing.

It’s the messaging people hear daily every day that’s the problem - sometimes at the dinner table or the church or Fox News. My parents were liberals their whole lives - until they retired and started watching Fox News for hours every day. They became hard right conservatives.

I have unlearned it all! The judging, the shaming, the mythical story restrictions. The freedom!!!!! I still live a conservative lifestyle but what makes me a woke libtard is….. I don’t give a fuck what you do! Beyoutiful. Be happy. Be your you. ❀️

The fucked up thing is the older adults are this way, NOT THE YOUTH THEY RAISED. We need to vote the old out ,TO GIVE THE NEXT GENERATION NEW LEADERSHIP AND A SHOT AT A FUTURE WHERE THE AMERICAN DREAM IS STILL ALIVE.

I remember hearing β€œthat’s just how grandma is”. I thought the bad would die out. It’s what I was taught. I know better now. It doesn’t die. It’s passed on. It’s accepted. I don’t accept it anymore. I’ve been kicked out more than once. I’m more than fine with that. I’ll defy every time.

My sisters and I called out our Texan grandma (harshly) for using an offensive word, she never said it again in front of us. It didn’t change her racism, but it also didn’t allow normalizing it.

All those things are LEARNED. Once learned, they become one choice from several options. Choose better! Total BS that "it's what I grew up with." CHOOSE BETTER! If you don't, then I will rightly accept that you are just a garbage pile of crap.

I grew up in a conservative family who had it racism issues. Not horrible, it my uncle was shot in Okinawa and my dad was not a fan. (I love the Japanese, otoh.) I spent my teen and adult years making sure I knew the truth and loved all peoples. It really isn’t hard. You just have to start.

Just imagine what the world would be like if DJT and Elon had done something to deal with their daddy issues instead of trying to throw money and power into the empty holes in their souls.

This goes for fucking everyone. EVERYONE. Being a minority does not make you inherently less susceptible to bias, prejudice, privilege or just plain old shitty ways of thinking. We all gotta put the work in. All of us.

fucked up #EpsteinTrumpMuskPutinBibiSyle DEAR CITIZENS, Don't get complacent.Don't lean back and think,"Oh, fuck it, I don't need to vote. There are plenty of votes already to STOP THE CARVING UP OF AMERICA..TO THROW US ALL INTO POVERTY..." #VoteLikeYourWorldDependsOnIt ...because it does! #KillEvil
