art is weird to exist as a commercial product, because it's not just for the "consumer." if the consumer gets something out of it, great! i'm glad. but it's mostly for the artist to work things out that cannot be spoken. it's expressing ideas that cannot be expressed

Alright, just broke 30K on this novel WIP! Feels kinda strange to take ~3 weeks to write 8K words, but this process seems to have a rhythm of its own, and the going is steady even if slower than I'd hoped. Really proud of the work I've done so far! Writing is hard work, but can also be damn fun 🤓

Man I need that AI bubble to burst like yesterday. I’m so unbelievably sick of having to deal with it and hear about it. And now it keeps cropping up in my real life. It’s like the goddamn Bodysnatchers.

Last December, somebody ran a stop sign and smashed into my car. Fortunately nobody was hurt, but since then I've been locked in a 6+ month battle with insurance companies, car repair shop, and rental place. My faith in the goodness of humanity was already struggling but now it's at an all-time low.

...even when the community surrounding those things doesn't always love us back. Reminds me of that line from Adaptation: "You are what you love, not what loves you." When you gather enough underdog outcasts together, we can become a community of our own. Congratulations on the story, Ace! 2/2

Wow—I was completely unprepared for The Testament of Ann Lee. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. The singing, the dancing, the true Dionysian ecstasy. Just unreal work all around.

I don’t personally put much stock in awards shows, but I’m baffled it didn’t receive any Oscar nominations. Why wouldn’t Hollywood want to celebrate a piece of work like that?

Really, really enjoyed Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! Jessie Buckley is volcanic as always, and Christian Bale shows a sweet, tender, conflicted Frank. Impressive across the board, and I’m usually pretty lukewarm on Bale. May Maggie Gyllenhaal live long and make many more strange, singular movies.

And now it's been fully deconstructed, rebuilt, polished, and sent off to my beta reader friends. After focusing on longer projects for a while now, this quicker turnaround is really refreshing. Getting excited to start subbing it hopefully early next year!

if you think "AI" is going to "outperform" writers at "literary fiction" we have nothing else to talk about. there is a fundamental rift in the way we see art and humanity and it's never gonna get solved, even when this AI horseshit goes away

A bunch of writer friends are noting that they have not used LLMs to write. Me either, absolutely not. I feel like we need to stop asking kids what they want to BE when they grow up and start asking them what they want to DO. Because: I am not here to BE A WRITER, I am here to WRITE.

Happy November 1st! Welcome to second October. Things are dying. Night comes sooner, hungrier than in the summer. The cold is here. Things haunt the woods. Snow can trap you, Donner Party your plans. Colds and flus awake, go hunting. Yeah, it’s still spooky season. It’s always spooky season.

Spouse and I both have Covid, her symptoms more intense than mine. Between that and the rapidly rising wave of fascism in the US, it doesn’t take much to remind us we’re still living in the summer of 2020, and might always be.

“Wow James, seems like this ‘trapped in 2020’ feeling is pretty intense for you, maybe making some art about it would help?” “Thanks, I’ve actually written a novel, two novellas, and have another novel WIP about it right now! Only one of them has a happy ending. Weird, right?”

I’m disappointed to learn that apparently the Buffy reboot is likely going to follow the new teenage slayer character, and I realized why this type of choice tends to bother me, where the previous protagonist ages into a mentor figure for a new protag. 1/2

And on that note (as if the world absolutely needs more reboots/sequels) I think My So-Called Life is absolutely primed for a contemporary series with all the original cast minus Leto, and maybe some of them have kids but the Angela and the OGs are still the protags dealing with grown-up problems

The audience for Buffy isn’t ~teenagers. It’s people who are ~Buffy’s age. When you’re imaginatively involved with a story, every audience member becomes the protagonist, and so the shows POV should age along with them. Right? 2/2
