Studies on childhood stress and amygdala & hippocampal volume disagree. New preprint led by Parnika Sivakumar asks how much of that disagreement comes from analytic choices: which hemisphere, how to scale for head size, which covariates go in. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.6... 🧵 /1

However, findings across studies have been inconsistent and contradictory. This inconsistency stems partly fro...

We also fixed the covariates and swapped the stress measure. Six STRAIN scores: acute, chronic, or total, each as count or severity. Left and total amygdala were significant under all six. So was right hippocampus. The opposite side of each region landed at 50%. /3

So back to the original point-- Are these findings inconsistent? Mostly no. All 768 primary models showed more stress with smaller volume, and ~62% were significant. Swap in other stress scores and 81% were. (and now I'm obsessed with multiversing) /4

We fit 384 models per region in 203 adolescents from BANDA. Every estimate was negative. More stress, smaller volume. Whether a model hit p<.05 depended on hemisphere. Left amygdala: 100% of models. Right: 22%. The hippocampus was flipped. Right: 70%. Left: 22%. /2

I, honestly, feel very honored to receive this award... I read a number of papers from Dr. Reeb-Sutherland when I was starting my dissertation. She was a real trailblazer! Thanks to @isdp.org and their award selection committee!

Congratulations to 2026 Bethany Reeb-Sutherland Mid-Career Award Winner - Jamie Hanson @jamielarsh.bsky.social Dr. Hanson is recognized for a coherent & compelling body of work that has helped define the neuroscience of affective development under adversity & public outreach isdp.org/2026/06/15/2...

Check out our new paper evaluating the performance of five brain age algorithms in two population-based cohorts of youth 🧠 @ohbmofficial.bsky.social

🧠 Not all brain age algorithms are equal! In our new study, one algorithm (Pyment) outperformed other models in youth. Algorithms fail when your sample's age range is narrow or mismatched with training data. So, choose wisely... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #BrainAge #Neuroimaging

Notably-- Persistently LOW positive affect specifically mediated the link between adversity → internalizing symptoms (depression/anxiety), but NOT externalizing problems. This suggests distinct mechanistic pathways rather than general psychopathology risk. 4/5

Using person-centered trajectory modeling in 7,457 youth from the ABCD-study, we identified: High-Stable (28%) Declining (25%) Persistently Low (24%) Volatile (23%) Rather than assuming everyone responds the same way to adversity, we let the data reveal natural subgroups. 2/5

The stark reality... As early life adversity increases, probability of staying in the High-Stable group drops from ~25% to just 4-8.5%. Meanwhile, Declining trajectory membership rises to 65-70% at highest adversity levels. 3/5
