Delighted to be here @carleton.ca and excited about the work.

MPNL & PANL Perspectives@mpnl.bsky.social

Welcome to the MPNL program's new Chair in Philanthropy, Dr. Jamie Levine Daniel! @jamielevdan.bsky.social Funded by a collaborative group of donors across Canada, the Chair is a first in Canada, and a key building block to establish a world-class Centre for Philanthropy at Carleton University.

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has such a reputation that when I went to swap my license for an Ontario one, the lovely folks there just sighed, "Oh, NJ" when I handed over my documentation. It all eventually worked out but I appreciate that NJ makes nothing easy. 1/2 #NeverChangeJersey

My favorite example of administrative burden: our MVC had "cut the line" passes because almost no one ever gets the ID reqs right the first time. They send you off with a pass to reduce wait time when you come back, choosing to continue the cycle (instead of, I don't know, fixing the root issue) 2/2

📣📣📣 New job: I am now Associate Professor & Canada's inaugural Chair of Philanthropy at @carleton.ca. I am excited to work with my Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership colleagues and people and orgs in Ottawa/across the country to help build knowledge and strengthen Canada's nonprofit sector.

Explored the Jewish Museum and (still operational) synagogue in Belmonte, Portugal. It hit me after that there was no police or security presence at all. We were welcomed in both places- no id checks or anything. I can't remember the last time I went to a synagogue that open and accessible.

Was reviewing video of some old talks, and was reminded of @raulpachecovega.bsky.social's generosity - he took the time to attend a talk I gave in 2022 on translational research and kicked off the discussion with the first question. May his memory continue to be a blessing. youtu.be/VhfVzjygSLE?...

We also saw similar decreases in scholarships for our students in NYU's MPA/MA in Jewish Studies dual degree. Struck me as hyper focused and responsive to a specific moment, to the detriment of Jewish communal leadership long term. Great observations here. ejewishphilanthropy.com/bronfman-fel...

The court didn't limit the use of race. Whiteness is a race. They just elevated whiteness as credential. I will call this out on every headline I see with this framing.

Humanity did that. Science did that. Publicly-funded research did that. Excellent universities did that. Diversity did that. International cooperation did that. Artemis II is a perfect example of what we can do at our best. Welcome home, Integrity crew!

Oh, hey, it's me.

New pub w/ Laila Gozzi & Ellen Loots. We analyze how earned revenue embeddedness (connex between earned income & mission) relates to arts nonprofits' financial independence. Key finding: embeddedness & financial independence are positively related; thus; mission & money can be mutually reinforcing.

I think I entered it three times- and even checked a dictionary- because I was so convinced it should have been there.

Online NYT Spelling Bee discourse is 100% “how dare they have [some word I don’t know] but not [some word I do know]” Karen behavior. But this one raised my eyebrows a little. It’s a pangram!

Bill is speaking in my class in March (thanks @joshshepperd.bsky.social for the connection). He already took the time to talk with me about the class, what might resonate with students ... I'm so excited.

Legendary founder of NPR programming Bill Siemering is enjoying Zoom visiting with students so much that he's asked me to put a second call out. No honorarium necessary. Any takers?

Hi #academicsky - I am teaching an undergrad politics of public policy course. I have a section on informal policy actors. A student asked for recommendations re: labor unions. Anyone have any resources (podcast, reading, video...)? Think intro level.....

Fellow #IU Alums, Please check out this letter (to you!) and join us in pledging to withhold donations from the school until our alma mater takes steps to restore the values it once held so dear. And share with any alums in your network.

You know the parable of the two wolves inside us? Well, for my pomsky, this plays as: Wolf: Let me out. This is my weather. I must sing the song of my people. Upon going out, immediately, the Pomeranian: Let me in let me in, it's freezing, why am I out here. Upon being let back in...repeat...

Bad Bunny's historical advisor is an assistant professor at UW-Madison. Hell of a flex for your tenure file.

Kevin M. Levin@civilwarmemory.bsky.social

Not at all surprised to learn that Bad Bunny has a historical adviser. His halftime show was a reminder that our history and culture are deeply intertwined with the rest of the western hemisphere. We should think of his performance as part of #America250. #SuperBowl news.wisc.edu/pop-star-bad...

Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

The thing about America today is that if you just describe what is happening objectively and unemotionally you sound hysterical and partisan and what you have to remind people is that the reason for that is not you, it's the people doing the things you are describing

This guy went to work today, put a mask on, kidnapped a 5 year old child, and then used him as bait so both he and his father could be sent behind bars

I say this every time I see this theory but what many people forget is that the Cubs played Cleveland. I think either team winning would have effed the timeline so 🤷🏽‍♀️

While everyone else was all in on The Pope Theory of The Bears I personally choose my brand of deranged to be “the Indiana Hoosiers football team winning a national championship will Freaky Friday us back to the world we lived in before the Cubs won the 2016 World Series.”

My favorite time of the semester: grading final reflections. I give my students options to do traditional essays or unessays. So far I have had wonderful reflections, responses explained via song playlist, a moodboard....

Tomorrow we have a community Chanukah lighting & my kid has a caroling gig with choir. Both are public events, but my husband and I only debated whether to skip one of those because of security concerns. We're going to both, but my heart hurts at the fact that we even had to have the conversation.
