As a press-regulated outlet, we hold ourselves to high standards of accuracy - the case many folks are pointing to when questioning the 'may' in this quote - happened in 2023, not under this *specific* policy. From a journalistic accuracy (albeit technicality), it's a critical differentiator.

Is it right and fair to talk about the two in the same context in a conversation? Arguably, yes - if done with nuance and accuracy. But we should also consider the impact of this policy on people not seeking care, and how misinformation and our framing might shape those decisions.

Have seen a lot of people questioning the quote 'may' in this headline. I understand why, in the context of a very similar case that has been shared widely. But a few things we should be careful about - short 🧵

First, we should think about the family and what their wishes are regarding how we talk about it. True, after any death or tragedy, we should use that to guide how we talk about it. The question I ask myself is: Am I telling their story in a way I know they're comfortable with?

Analysis by @jamiewareham.co.uk This is not the code of practice that anyone wants, gender-criticals or Trans+ people. It toes the line between saying Trans+ people are protected, while essentially treating them as a third sex that, in many circumstances, will force them to rely on unisex toilets.

When stories about allegations against senior team members at PinkNews (which have been long denied) first began to gather steam, my first thought was how it was indicative of a broader cultural issue in the gay media and for LGBTQIA+ journalists in the mainstream.
