Our chair and a few replicators investigated a paper about elite footballers. And missed the bigger story. An independent researcher showed us what we had failed to see. This is I4R’s CRAVE–football investigation. It starts with a PNAS paper. #CRAVEFiles

Replying to @i4replication.bsky.social

Right now, a replication can exist and still be almost invisible to someone reading the original paper. That makes it harder for researchers, reviewers, students, journalists, and policymakers to know what evidence has accumulated around a finding.

Replication studies typically require considerably more work during peer review than standard submissions. Editors and reviewers often need to read not only the replication, but also the original paper, and there may be exchange between the replicating and original authors.

That additional effort is well worth it. Replications are a cornerstone of scientific progress, yet there have long been too few dedicated publication outlets for them. That's one of the main reasons I was happy to join @jcre.bsky.social as a Co-Editor.
