Today I am sharing a new preprint and accompanying blog post. Hundreds of published papers include impossible western blots showing protein expression in cell lines that have deleted or mutated genes. These clumsy mistakes are widespread and repeated by LLMs.

Unscheduled maintenance!! Anyone else load up on caffeine at 6pm and plan to use tonight to finish a whole bunch of really important work?!?! 😂😵‍💫😱#ausecon

Ahh, this is probably because of the PHP thing I'm seeing posts about. Seems a bit of a paradox: When PHP release the patch for the vulnerability, hackers can see where the vulnerability is and exploit it immediately??

Just found out the awful news about Helen Haines. UK politicians killed in recent years include Jo Cox and Ann Widdecombe. Female MPs are rare, except on lists of MPs targeted by violence.

There's a book called The Shipping News, published in the 1990s. Never read til now because the title hinted it would be a very subtle, quiet, arty little book. Instead: car crashes, decapitation, storms, and surprisingly, lots of burgers.

My take is that hiking rates into imported inflation is fairly insane but we don't have a sane option everyone agrees on. We will all miss low unemployment when it is gone.

Down at the tattoo parlour getting a large anchor. 🟣⚓🟣⚓🟣 Lots of space on the Freo bandwagon, climb on! #aflgf #aflgrandfinal #afldockerslions

🔥Get your masks and hepa filters now because the air will be smoke this summer. 🔥

Continuing its voyage into uncharted waters, the latest preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.08°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. Models expect the Nino 3.4 anomaly to continue rising into at least mid-November. Then there will be dragons.

We need a system that works better than "private number". Put a VOIP into the myGov app, or ping me with a passcode inside the app and then have the dodgy sounding bloke give me the passcode upfront.

Well they fixed it. We lost a bunch of salmon that got warm and soft, various other freezer/fridge items. So still out of pocket and pissed off. A fridge should not fail. But starting from that point their service was pretty good.

Australians: A people who will, in 3.5 months, salivate over a sport with 2 seconds of action every 30 seconds🏏 , but also complain about the pauses in the action at the mcg today.

I'd like to nominate a piece of iconic contemporary Australiana. It's everywhere. You can draw a straight line through Hills Hoists, Victa Mowers, Bonds Singlets, Holden Commodores, and this :

I have what I call a "human factors theory" for why robotaxis will not work, and why car ownership will be the killer app for robotaxis. It's a shit theory: 💩

The more recently a place urbanised, the fewer cities they have. this is an important observation, because some pattern-matching planners are trying to get poor countries to look like rich countries and spread them out, even though that may not make sense any more. 4/

Three months til the American midterm elections and I suspect the people devouring the most @fivethirtyeight content on close Senate races will be in Tehran. Keep US gas prices high and brand Trump will begin to stink.

“Here’s what we found: Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”

theconversation.comBig US-style trucks are killing more pedestrians in Australia – our research proves itPedestrians are more likely to be killed by heavier cars – and even more so if the vehicle is taller, Australian-first research has found.

Americans have passports now. Two aspects to lament here, and one to laud. 1. More americans everywhere. 2. We can no longer consider ourselves superior to them in this domain. but 3. they might actually learn something

Holy heck. Looks like outback South Australia.

Truly startling - across swathes of England and Wales, dozens weather stations recorded ZERO rainfall in July, for the first time in their history www.newscientist.com/article/2583...

There's surprisingly little out there about new Victorian Labor leader Ben Carroll. He has either done a lot of work in private or done not much work. Most of the recent bios are based on his inaugural speech to Parliament, years ago.

The speech is mostly about people/ institutions, not much about ideas. Long passage on how Crean helped him meet Bill Clinton. An unkind interpretation would be an obsession with proximity to power. But I also know he pushed to get phonics taught in schools and that is an issue I'd die for.

Lot of people about to find out their paintings market value = frame value.

CPA Australia is complaining that the capital gains tax reforms will force ordinary Australians to value their Pokemon cards. I promise I'm not making this up
