Replying to @mattgertz.bsky.social

Boomers spent their peak earning years demanding lower income taxes now spending retirement years demanding no property taxes — that puts a very large burden on the income-earning generation squeezed between their kids and declining parents.

It's amazing how much time and money people can save when a government agency decides to consolidate two applications that go to two desks in the same building into one application that goes to both desks at once.

California's new housing finance agency will let developers apply once for both subsidy and tax credits instead of navigating separate systems - an estimated $60,000-per-unit savings. www.taxcreditadvisor.com/articles/tom...

Clever thing they do in Boston: They make the bus to the airport seem like a train. You transfer from the train. It looks like it's running on train tracks. Addresses that whole "oh no I don't want to transfer to a bus" anxiety.

But if you power pose while reading a disfluent it is a game changer.

Gordon Pennycook@gordpennycook.bsky.social

You know that finding that disfluent fonts trigger analytic thinking (Alter et al. 2007)? We've known that it doesn't replicate more than 10 years. In fact, the original effect was driven by weirdly low accuracy for 1 problem IN THE CONTROL CONDITION. Wild that this paper is cited so often.

Nature meta-research project puts claims in social-science paper to the test. Refs in last post I'm interested in Econ and Psych so I focused on that: Econ had about the same rate of "not reproducible" analyses as Psych and a worse rate then Political Science.

It's hard to look at things like this and not see a country headed toward some form of collapse.

We asked people around the world to rate the morality and ethics of others in their country. The U.S. is the only place we surveyed where more adults describe the morality and ethics of others living in the country as bad than good. See our full morality report here: www.pewresearch.org/...

I am excited to read Jennifer’s new book.

I'm so grateful to Greg Berman for this lovely review of my new book, in Vital City today. Don't have your copy yet? You can order THE SCIENCE OF SECOND CHANCES wherever you buy books - and you can find it in stores tomorrow(!!). (Links in comments.)

On February 7, 1784, after eight months of activity, the Laki eruption finally came to an end. From a system of 135 fissures and volcanic craters, an estimated 14 km³ of lava poured out, enough to cover the surrounding landscape beneath a100-meter thick lava layer...

LLMs seem like the human experience of reading aloud when it is going extremely well, as if, to the listener, you could look away from the book and continue reading all the same. Musicians call this "reading ahead". It is predicting the next letter, word, tone, mood from what came before.

Reading aloud improves comprehension. In this case, that means reduced confusion and differential response to risk vs mirrors. files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ8...

Another surprise: Reading instructions aloud makes a big difference to both comprehension and behavior. The replicators run a treatment in which instructions are not read aloud by the experimenter. Comprehension errors rise by 41 pp, from 7% to 49%!

💡 Open science: A team of researchers at Shandong University has attempted to replicate Oprea (2024 AER). The results do not replicate. Oprea 2024 reported an online lab experiment, and found that prospect theory anomalies occur not only for lotteries, but also for deterministic 'mirrors'.

When I was in grad school in the 90's the rule of thumb from twin studies was that the heritability of everything was ~50%. It turns out that twin studies are highly confounded, & after unconfounding w/ new genome-based methods (Family-GWAS), the median heritability of behavioral phenotypes is ~5% 🧪

Eric Turkheimer@ent3c.bsky.social

I know it's a rough time to be talking science, but in case anyone wants some distraction, I wrote about the Tan et al (2024) analysis of heritability and polygenic indices for complex human behavior. Title: Is Tan et al The End of Social Science Genomics?

Sure it's a 1/1000 chance. But, the real question is "What’s the probability of such a bad trading day, given that the economy is actively being destroyed by someone.” Then it is more like 9/10. #ForeverBayesian

Ryan Cummings@weakinstrument.bsky.social

The past two days have been nothing short of historically bad. They have been worse than 99.9% of other trading days since 1929. This was the 5th worst 2-day window for stocks since 1945. It is arguably the singular major drawdown resulting from a policy choice by the President.

🚨 Oprea (2024 AER) argued that prospect theory choice anomalies were not due to risk, but due to complexity-driven mistakes. But this new analysis convinces me that Oprea (2024) is substantially wrong. In my opinion, the paper should be retracted.
