In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.
Yeah start insinuating he has morning chai rather than coffee, say that he knocks things for 6 rather than hits a home run, allege that he is generally a clean living good boy who loves his mother and prays every Friday (pejorative).
I know there’s a lot of other stuff going on in the news, but this is honestly so important
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation
Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.
From the outside, a lot of DSA internal politics these days looks like a clash between people who are becoming increasingly successful at democratic politics and people who want to act like authoritarians despite having no actual authority
The other resolution (which passed 15-12) calls on Raman to meet with DSA-LA leaders by Nov. 30. If she doesn't affirm her support for BDS and sign on to DSA's campaign to stop Israeli weapons transfers at LAX by Jan. 1, the NPC could vote to expel her. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

the routine, pay for play pardons are all by themselves one of the worst corruption scandals in american history!
My brain cannot process this level of corruption. She was being paid $50 million to engineer a pardon from Trump *while working at the Justice Department* as a "Special Government Employee." And it worked. He got the pardon, and she got the money. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/20/u...

no better demonstration of the fact that the GOP is an objectively pro-child molestation party than the fact that paid professional operatives thought this ad would be a good idea
🚨 VILE: Vivek Ramaswamy’s new attack ad against Amy Acton features her estranged mother, who stayed married to the man who sexually abused her daughter at age 12, even after his arrest. Now even conservatives are calling the ad disgusting. The horrifying story behind Vivek’s attack:

Same genre of thread from last month.
After @pipedreaming.bsky.social got done with his presentation on single-stair venting a few days ago, one of the committee members said, exasperatedly, “I didn’t realize I was signing up for this” – as in, he didn’t realize he’d be volunteering his time to review such a big proposal. I worry…

This ad effectively allies with a child rapist to smear an opponent. But then Trump is still president despite suppressing reports of HIS alliance with a child rapist. I suppose you could just assume that is fine with a lot of people
Amy Acton's brother slams Vivek Ramaswamy featuring her estranged mother in a campaign ad. "This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core – a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants."

A lot of the discourse in Europe is focused on short-term rentals, speculation, and immigration (!) Ironically, the EU Housing Task Force has made the shortage a key part of their platform, with great research on the 4.5 million unit shortage in the EU! publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu/repository/h...

JD Vance’s not so subtle point is that the United States belongs to white Christian men, and the rest of us who don’t meet all three qualifications only belong here insofar as our betters choose to tolerate us.

"What Vance is really asserting with his demands for gratitude is the right to deference and a certain degree of submission from nonwhite Americans, and in particular nonwhite immigrants. He is, in other words, asserting that their citizenship is permission-based rather than respect-based."

Great piece by @resnikoff.bsky.social. "The current vice president of the United States doesn’t have much of an official portfolio, but he does appear to have at least one significant passion project: demanding that other people make elaborate displays of gratitude toward the United States."

I've been pretty immersed in Spanish and Catalan media for the last few months and it's really wild that despite the scale of the crisis, no one even mentions housing supply or the rules governing new construction.

This is a really good example of taking the critical assumptions of synthetic controls seriously. These models only work* if one thing changes at the break point. Here, there were two, but balled into one: reducing penalties for drugs (1) makes drug cheaper but (2) keeps ppl out of jail.

Ned Resnikoff argues that housing advocates can't skip political fights. Local rules that make developers add community benefits already exist, and opponents use them to stack costs until projects fail. Austin and Sacramento show zoning reform works. publiccomment.blog/p/sometimes-...
