quick (re)intro: I'm Jason, I make tv for developers at @codetv.dev & I love teaming up with devtools companies and individual devs to make unique, memorable projects - custom video - event installations - devrel / marketing strategy & campaigns I want to work with you! details: jason.energy/links

jason.energyJason LengstorfJason has 20+ years of developer experience, which he combines with stage and video production expertise to help companies tell better stories.

new adventure: I worked as 1st AC on a narrative short film over the weekend, which gave me an excuse to sit WAY too close to the screen (in your face, Mom!)

I'm going to be in Portland this week Wednesday-Friday for 👨‍💻 @codetv.dev with @cmgriffing.bsky.social Who can help me out with some awesome recs? I'm looking for: - great food - great coffee - some scenic running routes in the 5-15km range - other recs so I have an excuse to stay for the weekend

There are only a few US brands left that still taste like actual chocolate and boy howdy will you pay a premium for that. Sincerely, Someone who bakes a lot of chocolate chip cookies and makes maybe the best hot chocolate you've ever had.

Many people in writer Rachel Handler’s life felt that something was amiss, that commercial chocolate didn’t taste the way it used to. For our Cover Story, Handler spends several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex to find out why. www.grubstreet.com/article/choc...

that’s a wrap on The Cold Start! I had an absolute blast. huge thanks to everyone who joined the live audience and to @cloudflare.social for trusting us to kick off Connect this year. watch this space for the replay to drop soon!

I’m here in SF at this event. today at 4pm, come see what the @codetv.dev team has been cooking up with @cloudflare.social : watch The Cold Start 👀

Good night, San Francisco! ✨ Moscone West is glowing and ready for #CloudflareConnect. Can you see the orange? 🧡 We can’t wait to see you all starting tomorrow morning. Get some rest, and just look for the orange! ☁️ See you there!

CASTING CALL: I had a team drop out, so I need 2 devs on short notice to join an episode of Web Dev Challenge in Portland on Oct 21–23 TimescaleDB and sensor data challenge. if that sounds like fun, grab a friend and slide into my DMs ASAP! 💜

got a team lined up! thanks to everyone who shared and reached out. and if you're interested in joining in the future, hit me up! we're always casting (and usually not on such short notice)

sometimes I get in my head about the world and I get sad, and then I have a dinner with a group of people and I remember the internet is an anger/despair amplifier and I feel better

a lot of the automation talk seems to assume that we are all, beneath all of the "friction" or "toil" or whatever we're calling it, rational I am NOT rational right now I want a cheeseburger. tomorrow I will not an optimistic version of myself will book the early flight. future me hates that guy

this is a classic for a reason: "the biggest conflict in any relationship is choosing what to eat tonight" we CANNOT automate or delegate a ton of this stuff because we won't be the same people each time the cron job runs

something I don't like about the current state of tech is how things are actively moving to secret/unwritten rules in an effort to prevent AI from gaming systems. backchannels have always been a thing (both good and bad) but feels like they're becoming the ONLY option

I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that it’s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity it’s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked

eventually we stopped tolerating that as a population/market I have literally no idea what protocol allows me to keep my number when switching from Verizon to T-Mobile but I would never give up that capability now that I understand it’s possible

we don’t need to explain atproto. we need to move the Overton Window to get people asking why it’s considered normal that a company can unilaterally control (and destroy) part of our identity and we just… let them

the single biggest thing I want from loyalty status points (hotel, flights, whatever) is a phone number I can call for help having to play 20 questions with a chatbot to finally find a phone number so I can play 20 questions with the IVR so I can then get transferred 2+ times is so awful

Alaska Airlines does this so well. I have a number once I'm logged in. if I call that number, they recognize my phone number, greet me by name, and then just... handle whatever it is I'm calling about I realize that used to be table stakes for customer service but goddamn if it's not a luxury now

(this thread written while waiting on my 4th hold with a help line for a company where I have high loyalty status so I can do a thing that the website should let me do myself but here we are)

when I first got on social media, it felt like a chance to talk to people that I would, hopefully, meet someday (at a conference, at a local thing, etc.). I think online friendships are fine, but I heavily lean toward pulling my online friends together (through CodeTV, friendly gatherings, etc.)

Carl Vitullo@vcarl.com

unfortunately i've come to believe fairly strongly that online community is deeply insufficient for the human experience, which makes it hard to stay attuned to the online communities i care about

the ability to keep in touch with anyone, anywhere is incredible. but it’s not gonna match the feeling of occupying the same space, having a deep, wandering conversation with full nuance available, sharing a meal, laughing together until your faces hurt

I can tell when I’ve been alone too long because I start to feel anxious and hopeless. I start to feel this urge to post more, but posting doesn’t really help. often makes me MORE anxious an in-person activity with friends fixes it immediately

do I know anyone who works with Replit frequently? I've got a time-sensitive project coming up that I'm casting for — looking for a team of US-based devs to participate. please hit me up and tag people you know who might be a fit!

the strongest proof of this is that the AI companies go HARD on human-made video. OpenAI has in-house video crew + dedicated sets and put a lot of funding and effort behind the grandmas and kids campaigns. Google AI is pushing a very practical whack-a-mole campaign your company should do this, too

when everyone can generate anything with a prompt, how do you stand out? most app promo videos I see are indistinguishable from each other (because they were likely made w/the same basic prompt) the only way to stand out is to care and to put actual effort into what you make. been true. still true

I make a job at the end of this thread but it's a good thread from Jason on why focus helps you ship quality features versus chasing the smell of cheese

the hard parts of building a business are - solving a real problem for real people - ignoring shiny ideas that are fun but distracting - prioritizing boring stuff that moves the needle - connecting with customers if anything, AI makes it *harder* to build a successful business

Jason Lengstorf reposted

You see, the simple solution is just do everything right. Make no mistakes. Then success just happens and all the problems are solved.

I would be an immense asset to just about any media production or broadcast team. 8 years in radio, 1 as an accidental IT manager; my podcast Digital Folklore hit #16 on Apple's 'Top Shows' chart in all categories, I've won 3 awards for radio commercials; I know how audio works down to electricity.
