I made a new feed called Nature in the News that pulls together positive posts around nature conservation, research, new technologies, and renewable energy. Check it out here:

Saw Wildwood yesterday and what an absolutely incredible feat of creativity. It’s dark, it’s gorgeous, and it deserves all the awards. It’s also a little love letter to Portland and to Oregon and the whole theater clapped at the beginning AND end of the film. It’s really, really good.

I've watched Practical Magic every year at Halloween since it came out. It never gets old and I love it. I love the set design, I love the prop design, I love the lighting, I love the characters. I don't know (and don't care) if it's even considered a "good" movie. Every watch makes me happy.

I’m so excited to see this!

Wildwood, the new film from the animation pioneers at Laika, is the longest stop-motion feature yet made, w/ voice performances from Carey Mulligan, Tom Waits, Mahershala Ali, Richard E. Grant & more. Not for little kids--it's scary & violent as hell--but a genuine dazzler. slate.com/culture/2026...

I sent the proof over and the book is at the printer! I've been writing since I was just a little girl but never had the guts to actually put anything in print. I'm so excited to hold this in my hands and put it on my bookshelf! You can get a copy at mm.gifts.

oh good. it's time for a walk to both force myself off social media and avoid my growing to do list.

Also I got almost 5000. The Cactus Wren got me, the little trickster. But I *did* get the California Condor (harder than you might think), so I'm still a winner.

There are only a few US brands left that still taste like actual chocolate and boy howdy will you pay a premium for that. Sincerely, Someone who bakes a lot of chocolate chip cookies and makes maybe the best hot chocolate you've ever had.

Many people in writer Rachel Handler’s life felt that something was amiss, that commercial chocolate didn’t taste the way it used to. For our Cover Story, Handler spends several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex to find out why. www.grubstreet.com/article/choc...

I built a fun little Chrome extension that lets plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. To access them again, you have to slash through the vines 🪚🌿

I've been baking bread off and on for about 8 years now. Every fall I get back into the rhythm of it, and this year I've finally written very prescriptive notes in my cookbook with schedules and everything.

I put a skeleton in one of our porch chairs, right in front of the window. Every morning when I go to open the shades I've been giving myself a little jump scare. 💀

Just a few images in my new little book, A Garden Full of Hope. I took all the photos in the book, and had such a lovely time watching these flowers catch just the right light. Get the book at mm.gifts.

Pulled some dahlia seeds from the spent blossoms today. These are cross-pollinated seeds so will be surprise colors!

CASTING CALL: I had a team drop out, so I need 2 devs on short notice to join an episode of Web Dev Challenge in Portland on Oct 21–23 TimescaleDB and sensor data challenge. if that sounds like fun, grab a friend and slide into my DMs ASAP! 💜

Was on a walk in the park and saw three red-tailed hawks, gliding and diving on the wind, calling out. Every time I hear a red-tailed hawk it makes me feel like I'm out in the wild. Or that I *am* wild. It's like a memory of clear sky and wilderness and complete untethered freedom.

While on a walk through the park the other day, I saw a red-breasted nuthatch really low in a Douglas Fir. It either didn’t see me or didn’t care that I was there, but made a very silly “reep reep” noise. I had know idea until then that I’d been hearing ALL of them in the park this whole time!

Jeope!@jeope.bsky.social

The bird books don’t tell you the preferred habitats of a red-breasted nuthatch are the darkest crannies of unphotographable conifers. And their nonstop beep noises translate to “look how quick I am.” Still, it’s my birthday and I wanted a pic of my birthday bird buddy. #birds #HellYeahNuthatches

Ummm... I finished it? Reading through it one last time tomorrow and then sending it to the printer.

I'm almost ready to send my little book to print! I wrote, designed, and took all the photos. It's been such a wonderful experience learning and figuring out how to put a book together. Plus the thought of sending this to print and having something I can actually hold in my hands is so exciting!

Nothing like finishing the last pages of a months long project to trigger the "is this thing actually auto-saving?" fear. CMD+S until death baybeee.

Me on Oct. 1: Well I guess I gotta start planning all the Christmas stuff. Me on Oct. 10: Wow, I've done like almost all of the Christmas planning. No, I don't know yet what I'm doing for Halloween.

I finished all the images. 😭 Captions are the last thing and then making sure I didn't mess up my page layout. I've been checking and rechecking this whole time and am terrified there's like one page that's going to be off and needs to be fixed. Then off to the printer!

Marisa@marisamorby.com

The last few pages are always the hardest to finish. I'm editing photos for this little book and am down to the last couple pages and want to give up. Such a silly feeling since I'm so close!

This conference ended up being so cool. We talked about parks and public administration. We took field trips to parks around town and I got a history tour of Peninsula Park as the roses were glowing in the early evening sun. I met people who love parks as much as me. 10/10 was amazing.

Marisa@marisamorby.com

I'm going to one of my first non-tech US conference in probably 15 years. American conferences are bananas. 12 full hours of stuff with like one break. For why? 🫠

Planted my first cow pots today. These are pots made with, yep you guessed it, dried cow poo. They’re biodegradable and serve as initial fertilizer for the plant once planted. You just dig a hole and put the entire pot and plant in!

Finishing a little book about hope and gardening that I wrote last year and just did the final illustration!

Our first Launch Week 🥹 We really crafted it with so much love: a major release for our dashboarding framework, events like a workshop with @infobeautiful.bsky.social, and deep dives along the way.

Our AG Studio launch week is here 🔥 Want a dashboard that's a breeze to build, a joy to look at, and a pleasure to explore? AG Studio is a dashboarding framework just for that. We've just shipped a release that appeals to engineers, designers, analysts, and agents. Here's Day 1 digest 👀🍿

Today was a happy hour for a conference I’m attending about public parks in the US. I talked with a park director from Missouri for 30 minutes about emerald ash borer, tree species diversity, and nature education. I was just grinning the entire time, it was so much fun!

spaces, grasslands, forests, and wetlands were lost each year due to development and urbanization. More development and urbanization means dirtier air and dirtier water. Loss of wildlife and habitat means a ecological diversity loss, and ecological diversity loss is linked to more devastating
