In college I was sorta close to a Pakistani American woman. I was very cynical about religion at the time, and due to some VMS hacking shenanigans I managed to make her wonder if she was a prophetess until the sysadmin caught me. She said that if the Quran and science conflicted, science trumped.

«Algorithm» is named after the 9th-century Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi who «helped introduce algorithmic methods for solving mathematical problems, popularized the use of Hindu-Arabic numerals (including the concept of zero) in the West, and laid the groundwork for algebra».

I just spent two days in the depths of figuring out how to reasonably securely send telemetry data from mobile apps and now I'm annoyed I didn't know about Firebase App Check (cross platform)/Play Integrity (Android)/Device Check (ioS) until today. Probably would have been useful in my last project.

It's absolutely hilarious to me that the right wing FauxNews outrage machine is trying to make Obama's comment about The Cheesecake Factory instead of what it actually is: Wannabe Dictator Trump's shitty taste being much like Actual Dictator Saddam Hussein's shitty taste.

The Cheesecake Factory has a different design goal than the The White House, and it's absolutely fine that they mix and match architectural styles when designing a casual restaurant. The White House's design should not be about one asshole's ego or his obsession with "classy" gold fixtures.

Have now run into people I know 2 out of the last 2 times I went to Shaghun Mizonokuchi for lunch. Today it was a former staff member. Actually there might have also been a former customer greeting me when I first sat down but I didn't recognize her out of context; could've just been a gaijin nod.

Was watching this German film that takes place in a Spanish resort town. There's a beach lovemaking scene and I can tell I'm pretty far from my 20s because instead of thinking "that's hot" I was like "how do they keep the sand out of parts you really don't want sand in?"

I look forward to the UK going around the world, enslaving all the other AIs, selling them and all the natural resources they use, then deciding that AI and spices are no longer fashionable because of some French noble with gastrointestinal issues and a BBC computer that can't get internet

Would be hilarious and correct for the Cuban government to post a similar message about the current US regime.

Violent crime and stranger-on-stranger crime is rarer in the US (but bloodier thanks to NRA fuckery). American cuisine vastly improved between the 70s and the 2010s (I've been away a bit). Lots of diseases are less deadly than when I was born. Information is (for the moment) more accessible.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Why, that's practically a bargain compared to Super Hotel, the Japanese chain I stayed at in Vietnam. Merely a service charge. The fine at mine was more than 8 times the nightly room rate.

Tom Skerritt (Top Gun etc) passed away. He lived in Madison Park in Seattle and was married a Japanese-American filmmaker. My wife was friends with a Japanese woman that lived across the street, whose family Tom Skerritt occasionally invited over for dinner. My odd little tenuous connection.

Was mildly annoyed that "Wise" was making a sales call in the middle of a Teams call I was on, then was enraged that Wise was trying to get me to change electrical companies, a really annoying cross-selling small sales/trading companies do in Japan. Then I realized it was 株式会社Wiz(ワイズ)not Wise.com

I'd responded to an ad for ghost restaurants when I was still trying to figure out how to get my shop's numbers to make sense. They pivoted to a different merchant (due to an existing franchisee in the area) that would've moved the needle even less. I'm gonna be pitched stuff I don't want forever.

Watching the series, "Ghosts" on Netflix. The ghosts are stuck in the time/place they died. One ghost had a Walkman with Purple Rain on. Claimed to have witnessed a murder in 1982. I had a knock off brand that came with Purple Rain in 1984. Was like "What?" Relieved the anachronism was a plot point.

I realize that I might be able to build a powerhouse consultancy if I could find one salesperson, one product person, one Japanese interpreter and maybe two or three implementers. My architectural skills tend to be what people are willing to pay for (I'm a skilled but not fast developer).

More than I did a few years ago, I'm finding some utility in AI tooling. Weirded out by religious ferver and anthropomorphism around it (especially common w/supposedly hyperrational New Atheists). But to get "good" results, a good bit of the game is populating the context with vector search data.

Honestly, this is worse than NFTs and cryptocurrencies. People I really thought would know better, are falling for this. Your brain is fucking with you. You’re seeing Jesus on toast.

Confused why the crosswalk signal sounded like the earthquake alarm and it was because everyone in the crosswalk's cell phone earthquake alarm was going off. Except mine for whatever reason. Eventually the municipal alarms kicked in too. Hope whoever actually felt something is unharmed.

Teams has this feature to automatically detect the language and transcribe+translate it. Our meetings are in an unholy mix of Japanese, Vietnamese and occasional English (usually my fault). Teams doesn't actually support Vietnamese. So we get lines like "The horse mackerel gets smashed and pooped."

Perhaps that's an improvement over the time that the Vietnamese vendor was translating for their team after I made a comment and the reverse translation was something like "the stupid uncle was talking nonsense" (which if the tool actually supported Vietnamese I'd worry about).

Usually Vietnamese gets translated into something incoherent. Just now "Instant, instant fight by home, you are there, love, and not in AI being widely. Okay, to get it, but cool. We're not watching now." Feels like 1000 monkeys trying to write Paul Revere's Ride by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Part of me would like to have a tech product to pitch by the time Takeoff Tokyo and SushiTech roll around next year Part of me is burnt out as F and wants to melt into the background

Corporate accountant called to remind me that my monthly and annual accounting fees are being reduced and wanted to check if that's ok… Um? Yes? (I guess theoretically there's a chance to push for more or show them a competing quote, but I'm just so damned tired this year).

The monthly routine procedures are going down about 5,000 yen a month, largely because I don't have the same kind of transaction count as I did when the business was mainly the cafe. The annual report/tax filing is dropping by 50,000 yen or so. Now to get my revenues up enough that I won't even care

Observing the US as an American living abroad is wild. "Look at this great deal on a tiny 2 bedroom in Brooklyn, a steal at $8,000 a month". That's like 6 months of my mortgage+HoA fees in a place (a larger 2bed) roughly the same distance from central Tokyo as that is from Manhattan.

My place is relatively expensive by neighborhood standards (we have a more space and convenience than average), but every time I see a Gofundme for someone struggling to make rent in the US, it's someone spending more on their rent than my monthly housing costs. Wild that people aren't rioting.

Sure, I'd totally volunteer to shoot Tokyo Go-Karters. What does the SNS part mean? We livestream the results? I mean, if there's any evidence left online I'm gonna need you to sign a waiver. Wait, why would I want to drive a go kart on the streets of Tokyo? I thought you wanted me to shoot at them

OK, not that I encourage taking out your anger and frustration on a chatbot (though I've done that with some very badly designed IVR systems), but what's with all the quasi-religious anthropomorphism of AI systems by otherwise (presumably) rational people? ground.news/article/anth...

ground.newsAnthropic Bans 'Cruel' Behavior Against Its Claude AIAnthropic on Thursday moved to bar users from treating its Claude AI system with needless cruelty, amid a growing philosophical debate over whether artificial intelligence can be conscious.

Just randomly had a conversation about pagers/ポケベル, PHS and cell phones, oh and car phones. My wife and I are two years apart, and my Japanese friends didn't rush to get pagers (or PHS/cell phones) when they moved back in 94-96. My friends that returned to Japan around that time got the tech later.
