DOJ: Can’t we just rig an election via email?

Chris Geidner@chrisgeidner.bsky.social

NEW: DOJ argues that having LULAC / NAACP intervene and oppose the TRO request in DOJ's lawsuit against California "creates additional unnecessary work for the Court and for the attorneys" because the civil rights lawyers are "filing motions, calling, and requesting meetings and briefing schedules."

Today LA County responded to DOJ’s request that a court order California officials to set aside ballots from some 20,000 voters that the DOJ says it thinks might be non-citizens. The county’s preliminary analysis of the list is devastating for DOJ, though not at all surprising.

The proliferation of data centers across the U.S. is just like Apple forcing U2s Songs of Innocence onto our iphones. And how did that go over? #neverforget.

Does arresting the wife of an enlisted man and mother of four US citizen children, a person who’s been here since she was 6 years old, make our country great again?

Nick Miroff@nickmiroff.bsky.social

NEW: ICE is trying to deport a mother of 4 while her husband is at Fort Benning in Army basic training. When she went to pick up the family's military IDs, Navy personnel turned her over to ICE. She's been in the US since age six. With @nancyayoussef.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Given *waves hands* all of this, we hope you'll find our thoughts on how a few high-profile state interventions can shape the turnout decisions of far more people:

Happy to share the revised version of this paper, especially as we gear up for the election. We draw from comparativists to think about what selective state repression in the US context might look like (here, the arrests of formerly incarcerated folks for voting). It's not great! bit.ly/3Wp2jlY

BREAKING NYT: The California Supreme Court just ordered a county sheriff to return about 650,000 ballots he seized from election officials as part of an investigation into voter fraud that state officials said had no basis in fact.

The sadness continues for this alum and close friend of MALS. In times like these I remember that struggle is long and that the return of these programs in the future will be ever sweeter.

New UT applicants can’t select Mexican American, African American and women’s studies majors - although the provost hasn’t publicly cancelled the programs.

Roughly 250 million adult U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in the 2026 midterm elections, an increase of 8.4 million since the 2022 midterms. More than half of this growth came from Hispanic adults. Meanwhile, Asian eligible voters have grown at the fastest rate.

Good luck, Bakersfield.

NEW: The Environmental Protection Agency is finalizing a rule that’ll drastically weaken restrictions on “stripper wells,” which tend to be old, poorly maintained and prone to leaking methane, the highly potent greenhouse gas.

For a year, California's largest ICE facility has barred all detained residents from hugging loved ones. The policy has sparked so much fury that residents have launched campaigns across dorms demanding contact visits In my latest, see video from one detained organizer + how CoreCivic has responded
