@science.org reporting today that Vikaas Sohal was the leading candidate for NIMH Director, but was told this week that HHS is going in a different direction (see article) 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

Had a great time giving a keynote at the American Society for Intercellular Communication! Unique conference room and probably the best cafeteria food at a meeting (cough GRCs).

Come join a thriving neuroscience community!

Came home inspired by all the cool research presented at this meeting. Here are two of the best slides featuring @jasonsynaptic.bsky.social and @ennatsew.bsky.social #NeuroExpSRC

Jeremy Day@daylab.bsky.social

Incredible FASEB #NeuroExpSRC meeting over the last couple of days including field leaders such as Michael Greenberg and Richard Tsien - congratulations to the organizers @ennatsew.bsky.social, @ramensaha.bsky.social, and @spiegel-lab.bsky.social on organizing such a fantastic conference.

Was great to be back on TWiN to talk about our latest work on tau transmission!

Another wild story of transposons doing transposon things..except this a conserved primate GENE important for protein translation in neurons that seems to have “jumped” into a human specific virus 🤯.

Cedric Feschotte@cedricfeschotte.bsky.social

Thrilled to see this published today! Truly special because we made the initial discovery >15 yrs ago! We found two copies of a human gene called BC200 embedded in a human poxvirus. BC200 blurs the line between gene & transposon—both functional & mutagenic! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🧵1/n

Took a covid booster plus flu shot yesterday. Have been taking Novavax when I can find it but no other option this time…forgot how I react to the mRNA vaccine. My immune system went wrrrrr 😅

Can confirm (see 🧵 ). But let me share some optimism. A NIH colleague said today that against all odds, NIH has been…winning. “We made this EO a necessity. We fought hard. We threw sand in all the gears. All the lowdown ways of blocking grants failed to produce the results Vought et al wanted.”

Jenna Norton@jenna-m-norton.bsky.social

What. A. Day. NIH grant-making was paused for several hours today. Not sure who gave the order. But in light of the Friday night Bhattacharya-Vought feud & threatened EO to implement #ScienceDeathPanels, my money is on Russell Vought. I learned of the pause from a colleague around 11:30. 🧵

NoA 🎉 day! This job is not for the faint of heart. Got to take the wins where you can. Thanks to my lab for their perseverance and to the NIH staff trying their best to keep things going.

Another fun fly Arc paper with the @thecaronlab.bsky.social! Turns out fly Arc mutants Sleep a ton. Like a LOT. See Sophie’s entertaining thread below and the preprint here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Let me know if you’re interested in getting involved with IBRO! Now, more than ever, we need to find ways of strengthening international relationships and collaborations..and supporting neuroscience in under-resourced communities across the globe. 🧠 🧪 ibro.org/ibro-2026-el...

Can you imagine the shitstorm if this had been done by a democratic president?! This is not a functioning Republic.

Talked to staff in Senator Mike Lee’s office today about the OMB proposals that will change how grant decisions will be made. Thanks to @standupforscience.net for organizing the meeting. We all need to be doing what we can right now, in addition to making comments on the official online portal.

Colette Delawalla, PhD@cdelawalla.bsky.social

I am really proud to share the Stand Up for Science Foundation's new Impact Report on the OMB Rule Proposal--done by the brilliant @irenesufs.bsky.social @colesci.bsky.social and team! We've got such a great team at @standupforscience.net. www.standupforscience.foundation/policy-and-a...

We found that Tau is packaged into extracellular vesicles by Arc via a direct interaction, which eliminates toxic intracellular Tau and mediates intercellular Tau transmission. Arc levels in brain-derived EVs isolated from human brains show a strong positive correlation with phosphorylated Tau /3

levels. Strikingly, intercellular Tau transmission is almost absent in Arc KO mice. There are many cool observations to follow up on...Arc binds Tau in a complex way that we still need to understand and the implications for disease progression need to be investigated. Just need the NIH to fund /4

I am still waiting on whether a 3% scored R01 will be funded at the NIA (reviewed in Jan) and even the NoA for my funded R01 non-competitive renewal is a month late 😭. And this is preclinical science that shouldn’t have any “dirty” words!

Max Kozlov@maxkozlov.bsky.social

NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since early 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like? What is being flagged? I spent a month digging into leaked docs and emails. We've published the 235-word list that are being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵

I’m fine with the QED experiment. One can choose to ignore the rankings and just move on but some of the discussion that’s come out of this has been really good. Read this article as an example.

And NIH study section (Neuronal Communications) is a wrap! Despite all the "noise" going on, I'm struck by the earnest dedication and hard work put into all the reviews by the panel. Now....beer and world cup soccer time!
