And so it those we live with and should know who elude us. But we can still love them - we can love completely without complete understanding."

"For it is true we can seldom help those closest to us. Either we don't know what part of ourselves to give or, more often than not, the part we have to give is not wanted. ...

Joseph Wolff clearly thought a lot of himself: placing his initials on the shield of Athena AND on one of the books she is protecting. 📜 #libsky #rarebooks #booksky

"excessively titled" indeed! A choice phrase I'm adding to my lexicon.

Looking for some Halloween reading? The excessively titled 'A Book of Spirits Containing the Names Nature offices appearance & Seals of Fifty Good & Evil Spirits, with The Conjuration & Invocation for Constraining them to Visible Apparition Transcribed from the Goetia of Solomon' might be for you.

Seriously, one of the biggest joys (and educations) for me is looking at books with people who are brilliant and interested in the material and physical evidence embodied within books.

Morning Prayer this AM included a collect for Tyndale. Love it when my liturgical practice overlaps with my scholarly interests.

490 yrs ago today, William Tyndale was strangled and burned, having produced the English New Testament we celebrate 500 yrs of across 2026 His is a story that shows the violence and messiness of the early English Reformation and it opens my own study of how the English Bible became a bestseller

I'm also hoping that they will re-post the video series (After Hours) we did, as well as the Paper Cuts series, which were among the most viewed videos on their channel, and are important additions to our knowledge about books in the LHL collection.

I'd be glad to say more offline, but working there during his tenure was one of the most unpleasant and negative experiences of my career. I am glad we got some good folks out, and I hope that the good folks still there can resume their great work with little interference.

History of science & #BookHistory friends: What was the size of the initial print run of Hooke's Micrographia? (I've frequently seen the 1st edition referred to as a bestseller, but haven't found a source that confirms how many copies the Royal Society commissioned...) #HistSTM #histsci 🗃️📜🔬

A belated Spencer Library #newacq thread here: a Book of Hours, Use of Sarum, created in circa 1430 (Pryce MS D1). A wonderful addition to our MSS holdings, and a good companion to the Vosper Hours. Let's start with the Crucifixion and the opening line of text: 📜 #libsky #rarebooks #booksky

Acquired from Jörn Günther Rare Books, my friend Sara Öberg Strådal was a HUGE help with description and cataloging (work which I did, building on Sara’s work). It was likely commissioned by an English patron (Kalendar with Thomas Becket’s feast day struck through and the Latin word “vacat” added.)

I'll be in Geneva next week, and would welcome your recommendations for eating, drinking, and seeing! I'll be at AIB so I think we will probably see every interesting book in the canton...

Currently cataloging a French revolutionary pamphlet, dated "L'an deuxieme de la liberte" e.g. 1793 (best I can deduce). But then the imprint statement at the end gives the year 1790 COME ON THE FRENCH LETS GET IT TOGETHER.

Yesssss. My brother @jamesdean595.bsky.social turned me on to LaTeX and the Tufte handout format is one of my favorites…

There is so much pressure to add AI everywhere within uni curriculum right now. The college wants it! The companies we send our graduates to demand it! Parents! I'm sitting in the back of faculty meeting like, "Sir, this is a Wendy's (a place where we teach young adults how to learn & think)"
