"Candle Cove is a story about a children's puppet show that grows steadily more unsettling and horrifying, meant as a parable of the dangers of unchecked media consumption and the negligence of broadcasters towards children." (SyFy Channel) "Got it. Tooth monster."

Light grievance, I was the only one in the theater for Resident Evil who laughed at the green herb. Enough people got the typewriter immediately, but I was the idiot who was laughing alone at a potted plant. I don't know who to be upset at here.

A new neologism we need to join the likes of manspread, mansplain and manterrupt: Mandignation When a woman makes a mild criticism of male behavior and some guy online decides to take umbrage, trying to spin the circumstance, making the woman seem hostile or immature.

Step right up folks, see the human geek. Two bits a gander. God's cruelest mistake. So horrifying, you'll forget you're supposed to hate James Franco.

Never forget that David Ellison's Skydance Media was originally created so he could be an actor. Skydance's first film was 'Flyboys' starring James Franco and... David Ellison. David and his daddy invested $60m to make Flyboys. It grossed $17m Here's a bit of David's acting:

Flyboys is such a shit movie, I literally livetweeted a hatewatch of it on the Old Site. It was the only way I could get through it. These are the creative minds now in control of ~20% of Hollywood

Down in the mouth, senator Eric Schmitt returns to Missouri, hoping to lift his spirits and downplay his tarnished reputation by arranging to see the Blues home opener

Step 1: Create a network of LLMs and Image Generators Step 2: Lobby congress for Kafkaesque roadblocks to adult websites Step 3: Convince the world data centers are a trillion dollar necessity Final step: Own a smut empire the likes of which Larry Flynt could never have dreamed of.

Down at the ol' general store, townfolk gather on the stoop after sundown, either resting a spell in a nice rocking chair, or circle 'round the pickle barrel for a game of checkers, all while listening to pop-country on Hank's bluetooth speaker.

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

I've heard the song, but that's because I work someplace that pumps in muzak 24/7. It plays alongside David Guetta and Bebe Rexha's (Cover? Remix? Homage?) variation of Eiffel 65's Blue. No one's calling that one a once-in-a-generation musical accomplishment.

Honestly, the longer people talk about it, the less I think "Oh, people must really like Choosin' Texas" and the more I think "It's 1999, stop doing the Macarena, it's getting embarrassing"

Your reminder that fantasy films can look like literally anything, not just medeival Europe

EXCLUSIVE 🪩 Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is a rock inspired fantasy nodding to David Bowie and The Who. “Narnia is literally a world made out of music,” she tells Empire. “And rock ’n’ roll to me felt like a world made out of music.” Read more: www.empireonline.com/movies/news/...

There is some dissent on this opinion. I'd like to point out: A) The fantasy genre needs more Poor Things less Lord of the Rings B) I saw how crazy you went over the Ocarina of Time remaster. Sit down. C) Remember the mise-en-scene from the Barbie movie. I trust Gerwig.

Crush my spirits why don't you, Stephen Wilson Jr. I thought you were the first (mainstream) musician to use the word "Dhampir" in a song. Turns out I was just hearing the lyrics to Hardwired wrong.

My first clue should have been he was pronouncing it wrong, but who knows? Maybe he'd only seen it written and naturally assumed Dhampir rhymed with Vampire. Or maybe he tried to force a rhyme. I've heard worse and more blatant (what is an "excitation?")

This is something I've noticed with increasing frequency: Anyone can direct a bad movie. There are lots of reasons why things go south. Instead, a bad director is someone who makes a good movie and then spends the next decade making you feel like a fool for liking it so much.

Sony says "reasonable consumers" know they don’t own the digital PlayStation games they buy. It argues that it's "not plausible" to suggest that when they buy a digital game they actually believe they're "obtaining ownership" of it. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-sa...

No bad thoughts tonight, but I did encounter two young girls playing a new variant of the Penis Game, except instead of saying "Penis" in increasingly louder volumes, they were saying "Elon Musk" Now that is more vulgar, longer, and wittier.

Cavalier types will be quick to excuse themselves with claims like "it's not a perfect solution" or "we need to address the root causes of the issue" But really, these guys will never help their communities because they have no community. The closest thing they had was Little St James.

every billionaire & tech mogul, they all want to be adored & celebrated without doing the things Dolly did with a fraction of the power & money. What she had, she gave away. I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸

I think it's some sort of furthered version of the Prosperity Gospel. They believe themselves above mankind because they're billionaires, and they believe they've become billionaires because they're above mankind. But they still want us to like their Tweets. Go figure.

Renegade Magic 8-Ball answers: "You know damn well what you should do." "Oh gee, maybe try being an adult?" "I don't know, did you even try finding out youself?" "I'm a damn toy. I'm sold next to Slinkys." "Oooh, Magic 8-Ball! Meemeee mee mee mee. That's what you sound like."

Steer half the people towards the inappropriate relation, steer the other half towards her clearly toting around a diaper bag. Make it so defenders never know which argument to be focusing on.

The Natalie Harp outrage might be the biggest and fastest right wing freakout since Charlie Kirk. Someone clearly does not want mainstream normie attention on Trump's relationship with her. Or they're all competing with each other to see who can cape the hardest and get some tee time with the Boss.

Clear takeaways: - All art is a labor of love - Always challenge yourself - Children deserve quality media Lesser takeaways: - The 1950s were a really boring time to be a kid - Publishers will always screw you - Don't write a book about novelty food. You will have to eat it forever.

A small percent of you are still on Xitter for whatever reason, and you do you, but god damn, stop screenshotting the most vile takes and posting them over here. I don't want to see them. That's why I left. Your caption 'Look at this fucking asshole' is not as transformative as you think it is.

The amazing thing about this is that Zuck is talking about chatbots as a way to capture a younger audience for his graying platforms. Kids *hate* chatbots. My 18 year old and her friends use "that's so AI" as a pejorative to dismiss anything distasteful or ugly: futurism.com/artificial-i... 35/

Tournament of all the things from the past decade we thought were jokes that turned out to be deathly serious: this doesn't even make the quarter-finals. It gets knocked out alongside La La Land's BP Oscar.

Count Binface must be shitting his pants rn at the remote prospect he might actually win like imagine you created this novelty character for some good satire and then reality is surreal enough that you may actually be required to govern

A cynical me thought for a moment this would just lead to more unboxing haul and AI meme TikToks. But then I realized: What would TikTok look like if creators made videos they actually wanted to make because maximum engagement wasn't a financial imperative?

Offer me whatever cope you want concerning Binface/Farage, I've seen what happens when you have an election between an open Fascist who's already shit the bed and literally anybody else. It's not going to go the way you're wanting it to.

Solutions? I mean, apart from permanently shutting down the nation's power grid? Well, historically, our nation trying to fix its rot from the outside in doesn't work (prohibition, war on drugs, etc). Sadly, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

NEW from me: Americans are set to lose nearly $250B gambling this year—a record high, up more than 60% since 2019—and that's before counting unofficial betting via prediction markets or crypto Can anything stop America's gambling boom? 🧵

Change never comes from within. You've seen those 1-800-BetsOff ads? They try to pass the buck onto the individual. It's not an endemic problem. "It's your fault we got you addicted." The problem is still easy to ignore now. In a few years, it'll be hard to ignore the literal debtors' prisons.

Until then, all we can do is reach out to the kids in our lives. Lootboxes and Gacha games are the gateway drug. When they say they just want $5, please, please, please? Tell them No! And most important, tell them why! Another word for gambling is gaming. So obvious in hindsight.

You can't just ban it. We're past that point. Everyone's addicted now, and banning is just going to drive addicts underground. You think losing your shirts to Polymarket is bad? Polymarket doesn't have hired goons that shove you in a car trunk and drive you out to the old quarry.

The best thing we can do at this point is wait until grown-ups are in charge again and regulate the ever-loving shit out of the industry. Because when everything is breaking, the guys holding the hammers reveal themselves to be owners of the scrapyards.

Offer a suggestion like this? You're revealing more than you think. Five bucks says this guy watched Ace Ventura or Austin Powers for the first time in twenty years and with all the hype and fanfare removed, realized they were just above average.

Nils Gilman@nilsgilman.bsky.social

Comedy ages incredibly badly. I mean which 40+ year old comedy movies hold up? I can only think of a handful: Annie Hall. Some Like It Hot. Dr. Strangelove. Young Frankenstein. That’s about it. I like Philadelphia Story & It Happened One Night, but I doubt anyone under age 40 could tolerate these.

The funny thing is (excuse the pun), he is right that comedy ages faster and more poorly than other mediums. But he got the wrong conclusion. The thesis should be how can we preserve, deliver, and adapt these works for new audiences. Not "It's old now, chuck it in the bin."

I saw a stage production of The Tempest recently. 300 midwesterners laughing at the four centuries-old antics of Trinculo and Stephano is demonstrative proof that good humor, like all good writing, perseveres.

What does that mean? Well it could mean you have basic interests, liking whatever's popular, and now in your 40s you realize you never actually developed any discernable taste beyond what advertising sold you. Or it could mean all comedy is bad and everybody is lying. Tough call.
