Wild new story from @natlash.bsky.social Bird flu has been raging uncontrolled on a mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted, instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade. www.propublica.org/article/bird...

Currently wondering what message the UK govt thought it was sending by dressing up the Minister for Net Zero in a literal Shell logo.

Als Frankrijk de straat op gaat stellen ze niet teleur qua breedheid van de agenda. Versterken van kredietunies, cooperatieve banken en publiek betalingsverkeer is zeker geen slecht idee

Interesting debate @gef-europe.bsky.social. I agree Greens need to offer a vision of the good life, but materialist abundance is not it imho. Non-materialistic sources of wellbeing should be key (time to spend with family and friends, rich nature, etc.) www.greeneuropeanjournal.eu/outgrowing-d...

My take-aways: (1) An important open end is an analysis which also takes into account whether plans are 1.5°C-proof. Do those companies have even better results? If the markets do not value 1.5°C-plans there is still significant underpricing of climate-related financial risks; and

this already occurs with a quite weak transition plan definition: having (some) targets and actions for a transition. Moreover "the measure of whether the company is on track to meet their emissions reduction targets does not require alignment with a particular temperature outcome (e.g. 1.5°C)"...

Flashback to just 15 months ago... Andy Burnham endorsing the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty www.carbonbrief.org/28-quotes-fr...

“The Fossil Fuel Treaty is not just a plan—it’s a lifeline,” said Mayor @mayorofgm.bsky.social Burnham, joining Massive Attack to endorse the call just before a sold-out show in Manchester on #WorldEnvironmentDay2025. This is the moment music, activism, and leadership united for climate justice.

Why we need AI for climate solutions in the first place. The technical solutions were already there before AI (see IEA 2023 NZE scenario). Preparing our climate court cases with AI will not change the legal debate at the heart of them: do corporations have a responsibility to address climate change

The coming year we expect seminal steps in getting answers to that debate. Perhaps that will help steer AI in the right direction within the scenario's as well - inasmuch that is possible to begin with...

(i) AI as copilot; and (ii) Artificial General Intelligence. The former might have less climate impacts, but also less potential to mitigate climate change through innovative solutions. The latter has high uncertainty about radical innovations and energy consumption. I cant help but wonder, though..

Biodiversity decline and the climate crisis are complex.
