Today marks 106 years since my great uncle, PVT Sylvester Stephen Payne, died of pneumonia in France on the final day of WWI. His last letter home to his father, my great grandfather, was written two months earlier.

To-do list for SD Mayor Pete and DSD Uncle Frank (and the transition team): - at 1201 rip down the stupid fucking sign, regardless of whether Congress has officially changed the name (not looking good for the 27 NDAA lol) - at 1202 issue orders to rename all the confederate bases back*

#ResistanceRoots Ronald McNair was born on this day in 1950 in Lake City, S.C. He overcame roadblocks to earn a Ph.D. in laser physics and was among the first African Americans chosen for the space program. He was killed at age 35 when the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart on Jan. 28, 1986. /1

If you think you’re getting $5,000 from Trump and SpaceX shares from Elon, you haven’t learned a goddam thing these past 10 years.

There is much to admire in Abdul El-Sayed's response to the GOP plant in his audience. But one of the most deft things he did was to point out (twice) that our Constitution protects our right to follow *no* religion, thereby casting Christian nationalist Tommy as the actual religious extremist.

This Day in Labor History: October 18, 1981. The workers at Brown and Sharpe, one of the nation’s largest machine tool companies, went on strike at its plant in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. They struck for 17 years, the longest strike in American history! Let's talk about it!

A young woman bravely reported that she was sexually assaulted in 2024 by seven men at their fraternity. But instead of protecting her, Cornell University protected her abusers, letting them off with a slap on the wrist.

Wow! Amazing crowds at the Indy car race in DC! Not really, it looks pathetic but I’m sure we’ll see posts claiming record breaking crowds.

Powerful, important read from @rosebroderick.bsky.social. As states absorb Medicaid funding cuts, family caregivers face financial ruin: www.statnews.com/2026/07/13/f...

Sad to hear that Randolph Mantooth who portrayed FF/Paramedic Johnny Gage on the 1970’s show Emergency has passed away at age 80. He and Kevin Tighe, who portrayed FF/Paramedic Roy DeSoto, inspired many to join the fire service. I had the pleasure of meeting Randolph in Indianapolis in 2015. RIP.

This summer's record-setting heat wave is making wildfires in states like Colorado and Utah even worse. And to top it off, private equity investors are even price-gouging firefighters.

Our Republic can withstand a few birth tourists. It can't withstand giving the president the power to decide who is a "real American" and to vanquish those he thinks are not.

What’s up with this USMNT? Poor passing, defense lacking, and on offense dribbling into multiple defenders. Ever heard of passing? Everyone wants to be the hero?

btw 'mental illness' as the cause of violent crime is in the single digit percentage. As "mental illness" covers a whole host of things, there's no real metric to predict - therefore prevent - violent crimes by persons with mental illnesses. However, ...

This is the same party that cries "mental health problem!" after every shooting.
