A cracking piece here from @jaymcastello.bsky.social on unofficial AI-made game wikis taking over, often pushing genuine fan-made efforts or even official wikis out of the top search results. A kind of misserable mix of the AI search apocalypse, dead internet theory and the post-truth world at once.

eurogamer.net"These tools have made it very easy for bad actors to flood things" - AI video game wikis riddled with errors are taking over, and pushing real fans to the sideLLM-powered wikis, often full of inaccurate or irrelevant information, are starting to take over, leaving fans sidelined and publishers playing whack-a-mole.

after that we've got 3) What if evil woman was river 4) Go for a big walk outside 5) Space is pretty cool I think 6) Woman chosen by god ruins everything 7) Short story collection about platonic intimacy

it feels weird to not have any particular goals on youtube. i don't plan for it to ever pay my bills (i get a little ad revenue i'm not interested in sponsorships or patreon), and more views typically just equates to less quality of viewing ime

(there's usually a spike after a few days where the numbers go up and the comments get way more annoying). i probably won't put out something with the level of effort of the last video for a long time if ever. but i like having a platform that goes a little wider than blogging

spent like 2 hours on 90 seconds of this video essay today which is going to make people who know how to edit video be like "how the fuck did it take you this long and also it looks janky as hell" and everybody else be like "i'm folding my laundry not looking at the screen"

i'm technically in this issue twice, once talking about what makes romance work and not work and once gently pushing back on the recent framing around "women in games." you know, scary halloween things!

i got a rejection on a piece of short fiction recently (normal, not taking it personally) but i can't stop thinking about the feedback that said part of it was "unrealistic" when it was just. something that happens in the UK but not america

Replying to @zachweinersmith.bsky.social

Mostly I'm laughing about this but there really is something sick at the heart of our epistemology on this site sometimes. Probably it was always like this, but things aren't true because your ideology demands it. All you have to do is read.

sometimes i wonder whether being hard to impress is valuable in my criticism/reviews work and then i play an indie game from a few years ago that was acclaimed and i'm like Everyone Get Meaner Right Now

Almost every movie could be 15 minutes shorter, most games could be five hours shorter, and almost ever review/feature I read could be like 500 words shorter. Snip snip.

very few nΓΌ independent sites place such a big focus on freelancers, despite us perpetually being the outsourced bulk of every understaffed masthead. support DR however you can - who knows, you may read something from me on the site in the future, too

Design Room@designroom.site

We're a year-old today! To celebrate, we're making five changes to the site β€” and dropping the price of our most popular paid subscription tier.

i would sincerely like to know how this compares to the same experiment but using a search engine or, like, a calculator
