New ICE program would hire 142 "intelligence" analysts to engage in "threat analysis" and "network, link, and relationship analysis." In our current environment — and in light of the rotten history of police "intelligence" teams — this couldn't be more ominous. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

The FBI has been using, and companies selling, technology that allows agents to hack into and take over drones. But if the government can do that... www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

Many states have some strong privacy laws on the books that are not being enforced, Utah's top privacy official says. And state privacy officers shouldn't report to state CIOs. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

The FBI and DHS have seized hundreds of drones during the World Cup under corrupt civil asset forfeiture laws that let law enforcement agencies pad their budgets by taking property without due process. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

For-profit Silicon Valley-backed tech companies are positioning themselves to sit at the very heart of American police departments. What could go wrong? Well, we answer that question in a new white paper published today: lnkd.in/edu8vEza

Other states need to give this issue the thought and care it deserves before creating digital ID systems that will be used by big tech and other companies to track and control individuals www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
Ultimate responsibility for the Trump Administration’s immigrant kidnapping campaign lies with the Trump Administration itself. But just how involved is Palantir, and how should we judge its culpability? www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
We're hearing more examples of the use of drones for intimidation. That's exacerbated by an ongoing lack of transparency about drone flights. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
Ring is just one piece of a larger picture: data collection devices owned by both government and private entities, centralized by private companies through cloud services, and subject to AI analysis that makes them far more powerful than they would have been even in the recent past.
We’ve seen plenty of “show me the man, I’ll find you the crime” kind of abuse at the hands of the Trump Administration. But here's a reminder that such abuse can rear its head anywhere — and when it does, license plate reading programs are a natural tool for that... www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

Airspace over Homeland Security Dept. vehicles is to be designated “national defense airspace.” How drone operators are supposed to comply with the changes @jaystanley.bsky.social reports is one question. But another…. “national defense airspace”? Over DHS vehicles? Via @faineg.bsky.social
Great piece from @jaystanley.bsky.social of the ACLU on the shocking overreach of the FAA’s new rules that ban drones from flying within 3000 feet of even concealed and moving ICE and DHS vehicles: www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
Under this ridiculous order, if ICE decides to drive underneath/near your drone with no notice, you could be liable for criminal charges and/or a $10,000 fine. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
Retailers using face recognition against their customers are taking government suggestions on who to alert against. This raises 2 questions: A) Is this leading to construction of a nationwide look-out infrastructure? B) Are these companies helping Trump's brutal and lawless immigration campaign?
Flock charges its critics with wanting to "see murderers go free" and "normalize lawlessness." But at this moment in history, it's not privacy advocates who are wanting those things... www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
The big push for state digital driver's licenses is effectively a movement to increase the power of big companies and government to control individuals.
Using an LLM with your secure messaging service, as Meta proposes, brings new risks to the architecture that protects privacy and security. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...
We can debate the moral complexities of individual responsibility for the misuse of LLMs, but policymakers need to be realistic that lapses are inevitable and take steps to limit certain uses of AI. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

Utah is the only state where political leaders are thinking through the potentially disastrous effects of the current effort to create a national digital ID through the driver's license system.

We shouldn't get rid of police audit logs but we also shouldn't think they're worth more than they are
Some US prisons and jails have started using non-consensual, non-removable biometric wrist straps on prisoners to monitor their pulse, blood oxygenation level, skin temperature, activity level, and location. What does the ACLU think of this? I look at the issue in a post on our Free Future blog
Appalling... apparently "military grade" AI has fallen short...
News about the driver-surveillance company Flock just keeps coming in: findings from Massachusetts and Virginia, new deals with big companies, and more:
Digital driver’s licenses — now being built in many states — have a big problem that almost nobody is addressing: the threat of an explosion of ID demands from all quarters. There is a body of existing state laws that points toward a solution.
Generally people should have privacy from government, and the government should be an open book to the people — not the other way around.

It's not hard to imagine police departments deploying fleets of self-docking, self-navigating patrol drones over communities. We're starting to see that in the commercial space now.
