The Crime Index is now updated through July 2026 with data from 565 agencies covering 113 million people. Murder is down around 16% in our sample, property crime is down 9% and violent crime is down 5%. The historic declines continue albeit slightly smaller than last year.

So some good news -- I have a full-time job again. I started Monday as an election policy fellow for the nonprofit Eternal Vigilance Institute, researching election policy in Georgia. (Yes, I know the name is a lot.)

I did have some opportunities in journalism, but I decided to try something new, in part because a steady paycheck will relieve a lot of financial uncertainty that I was feeling.

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was uneasy about not being a full-time journalist anymore. I'm still going to try to freelance on some subjects not related to Georgia politics or elections.

I was interested in this job in part because the skills are very much like reporting -- research, interview, think, write, stay in touch with sources. It's also hopefully an opportunity to continue doing public service.

In Georgia, deal signing is commonly after the announcement, allowing officials to say nothing has been finalized, even though they sent an offer to the company laying out the terms. Also, it may be to a company’s advantage to delay a start date. Income tax benefits are more valuable later. #gapol

Serious question re Anduril in Ohio: If the purpose of subsidies is to "incentivize" a company to set up shop, why are they finalized 1.5 years after it did so? "This deal + accompanying incentives are said to be finalized sometime in the summer of 2026" www.americafirstpolicy.com/issues/from-...

In Bill White news #gapol

Bizarre story: Two journalists were removed by police from a corporate-sponsored Freedom 250 event in Brussels after they asked US Ambassador to Belgium Bill White about his threat against an American citizen/Belgian resident who had emailed Zac Brown Band urging them not to perform at the event.

Good news, if you are trying to get in touch, my cellphone has returned to the land of the living. (However, some of my contacts seem to have gotten trashed.)

If you're reading this, my cat and I have boarded a one-way flight out of the United States. The Trump administration wrongfully denied my work permit renewal; after months of demanding that they follow the law, we have run out of legal recourse, and I have no choice but to leave the country. (🧵)

For now, I’m going to be doing some freelance work (including covering Georgia’s primary election tonight for the @georgiarecorder.com, so watch for that!) But I hope to find a permanent position soon, and if you need someone who can write, research and think, I’m all ears.

P.S. I’m still in communications purgatory trying to get my old phone number ported to a personal account. For now, reach me by my personal email, or use my phone number to call me on WhatsApp.

As others have already observed, you can love the job, but it doesn’t love you back. We’re all expendable, but I mourn the contraction of the AP and believe we all will be poorer for it.

As for me, I’ve been telling people I'm finally going to figure out what I’m going to do when I grow up. I’m hopeful that after 29 years, that will still be reporting, but it might be something else.

I’m grateful for the coworkers who taught me how to be a wire service reporter and saved me from so many boneheaded mistakes. Thanks also to sources who gave freely of their knowledge and time. I’m especially thankful for all the folks willing to share their stories in moments of hardship.

I had some amazing experiences with the @apnews.com, whether wading in the floodwaters of Hurricane Harvey, living the aftermath of Georgia’s 2020 election or chronicling a mentally ill Elvis impersonator framed for the attempted poisoning of Barack Obama by a child-molesting taekwondo instructor.

But I am proudest of my public service work – writing about education funding and literacy in Mississippi, the sagas of the Kemper County and Vogtle power plants, examining petitions seeking a referendum on Atlanta’s “Cop City,” and probing efforts to remove voters from Georgia’s rolls.
