So hey folks, apologies here - I jumped the gun on this one. After a lot of discussion amongst various cephalopod scientists and a particularly deep dive by @cefafalopodo.bsky.social, it turns out this is not egg brooding. In fact, it’s not even a female squid!

UH HOLY SHIT LIOCRANCHIA REINHARDTI BROODS ITS EGGS LIVE ON @schmidtocean.bsky.social RIGHT NOW www.youtube.com/live/JCSI3T-...

to be fair i got a bit excited and my proclamation that this observation demonstrates egg brooding was premature; it’s hard to be certain given the isolated incident and resolution of the footage. consensus seems to be at least tentatively in favor of them being eggs.

Liocranchia with some eggs (evidently spawning & not brooding according to squid squad) @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 980 #samplinggap #MarineLife

this is a Big Deal we didn't even know oegopsid squid brooded their eggs until it was documented in gonatus in 2006 since then it's been documented in bathyteuthis and another gonatid of uncertain genus (probably gonatopsis) this is the first time a cranchiid has been documented doing this

this begs the question of how many other squid in the same family (cranchiidae) also brood their eggs does the colossal squid also brood its eggs??? crazy to think about

wake up babe new dolichopteryx observation dropped

Lisa@tuexplorer1.bsky.social

Here's some closer images of the Dolichopteryx. Such a fantastic fish! @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 976 #samplinggap #MarineLife

🦑 Meet Planctoteuthis sp.! 🦑 According to #SamplingGap Co-chief sci Dr. Perez: “Images have finally enabled the description of this tail, but no one knows what it is used for. It looks like a siphonophore from a distance, and one hypothesis is that it could be used for siphonophore mimicry.”

well that’s a hell of a way to kick off squidtember this is a cool observation, we don’t have a ton of east pacific magnapinna sightings

MBARI@mbarinews.bsky.social

Your Wednesday just got an upgrade: a new MBARI bigfin squid sighting just dropped! 🦑👀 During a recent expedition to study seamounts offshore of Central California, MBARI scientists and NOAA collaborators encountered a rarely seen Magnapinna squid. Learn more: youtu.be/cEw74DoCv6Q

I've been seeing a lot of "well I guess this is the way things are now" "ah another line of evidence that we are a fallen empire", attitude that I am begging people to shake off. There are people working their butts off to make things better. Please don't give up. Join us.

graneledone will scavenge mermaidfalls just as readily as whalefalls. the real interesting question is whether or not there are osedax worms specialized to mermaid corpses, as they are often specific to the animal they scavenge (no this is not real, i’m just riffing on one of eduardo’s works)

This cetacean carcass was found during a seafloor expedition near Puerto Rico. Some have called it a "mermaid" owing to its strikingly humanoid features, but biologists claim its heavily decomposed state cannot offer a positive identification.

been a great couple of months for magnapinna sightings. i need to update the list

Lisa@tuexplorer1.bsky.social

5342m New Magnapinna footage just dropped!!! @nautiluslive.org dive on 7.28.26 #MarineLife

they mention that there have been 60-65 sightings during the observation - absolutely wild to realize those numbers are based on the list i compiled and added to wikipedia (have something more official forthcoming that just got accepted, stay tuned)

i’m gonna have to side with danna, while i am of course a Squid Guy, and if you’ve never seen imagery of them “flying” you absolutely need to look it up immediately, ommastrephes is by far not the coolest option here.

Danna Staaf@dannastaaf.bsky.social

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I do not endorse the cephalopod. Look, everyone already knows how cool neon flying squid are. They're basic. Vote for an animal you've never heard of. Vote for a PHYLUM you've never heard of! www.theguardian.com/environment/...
