I'm just glad Trump wasn't awake to hear this, otherwise he might have gotten some bad ideas.

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Rally speaker: "Mike Rogers is an American. Abdul has a birth certificate. The birth certificate says he's a citizen of America. You know what? a birth certificate doesn't make you an American."

Once on Twitter I talked to a guy who said he sincerely believed in Norse religion and was honestly offended by Heimdall being portrayed by a Black man (Idris Elba) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I tried to explain to him that the same movie franchise also clearly states that the only person...

...other than Thor who's worthy of lifting his hammer is openly Christian; in fact, he says outright that he doesn't see the Norse gods as gods at all, because, and I quote, "There's only one God, ma'am. And I'm pretty sure He doesn't dress like that" Twitter guy wasn't offended by that, apparently

Jens, you are aware that the storyline ‚scientist wins a strange game about ancient Mesopotamia‘ usually evolves into the awakening of at least one ancient god or goddess, right?

“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened up a Cheesecake Factory” — Obama

If you want a fun story today: my wife and I are at @spielessen.bsky.social, the world’s largest board game expo, where I saw a game about ancient Mesopotamia. So naturally I entered the raffle they did to win a copy and to my own surprise I ended up winning 🤯 I’m the proud owner of THIS GIANT BOX

Why do some colleagues from psych, cog neuro, etc., accept AI nonsense that all or almost all our science will be automated? I'm a bit flabbergasted. Yes, of course we'll need observations, always. But to say theory and modelling practice can be automated by AI is preposterous. Some basic points...

ME: “I don’t know why this upsets you so much, it’s a simple observation: The word should not be referring to a rug, but instead to a domesticated animal that resides in your personal vehicle.” OWNER OF A CARPET STORE: “Please leave now.”

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

“You can see everything” finally has a release date for Germany (it’s December 3rd). Looking forward to checking this one out asap

This is the energy we need right now. No more half-assed “muh it’s just a tool” bullshit.

This post reminded me that I've been wanting to order this one -- so I just did! Love me some well-researched fun science facts!

In very fun news I learned this morning that my Beloved nonsense space facts book, The Milky Way Smells of Rum & Raspberries, is on its way to a second paperback printing. Congratulations (& thank you!!!) everyone for buying copies and emptying the warehouse 🎉🫡 🧪🔭📚

In the bedrock of my soul I know he started out thinking the press pool was a literal pool and has been seething with disappointment since he discovered the mistake

Eva Roytburg with an interesting update on AI economics. Looks like this might not be the full-on bubble burst yet, but at least a farewell to the notion of continuous exponential growth.

As a psychologist who's at least looked into the Unabomber story once (literature research for a book chapter), my assessment of the new Unabomber movie on Netflix is a resounding "eh"

I'm out on account of not being in the US (and almost exclusively doing writing), but if someone wants to take my place here, that would be appreciated

Benjamin Riley@benjaminjriley.bsky.social

BlueSky world, I'm looking for: -- US-based creatives (illustrators, film, art, but *not just writing*) -- Who radically oppose AI intrusion into education & schools -- And have created something(s) demonstrating their resistance Is that you? Know someone? Drop a comment please! Example:

So the US has limited Starlink use for Ukraine even tho Ukraine did not attack Russian oil refineries as they asked? What the hell esle do they want from us? To surrender?

If I had a nickel for every time that a famous 80s pop culture IP showed an alternate 1985 in which Nixon is still president I‘d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s still weird it happened twice.

In Oppenheimer, researchers discuss the virtue of continuing work on the bomb even though Germany was on the brink of surrender. One of them says “Hitler has blown out his brains in the bunker.” However, at that time, the location and mode of Hitler’s demise was only known to a few Russian soldiers.

Man in a gilet stood on platform 12 gives up on reading the display and asks ChatGPT out loud if he is on the right platform for his train. I don’t want to be dramatic about it but Eratosthenes figured out the circumference of the Earth using a stick and knowledge of a distant well.

In every meeting nowadays there is a random guy from middle management proposing AI usage. Do they care about moral implications? No. Are they afraid to fall behind “the others”? Yes. Do they have any concrete use case in mind? Of course not. Do they accept the limits of AI? “What limitations?”

Every time I rant about generative AI on Instagram, someone will call me delusional. He'll say that AI has already changed every aspect of life for the better and there's no going back. And then I will ask him what his job is, and every single time the answer will be "software developer"

Currently, a diagram is making the rounds that is claimed to show a significant reduction in Russian disinformation bot activity after Ukrainian drones hit Yandex data centers. There is no evidence that this plot shows real data. I suspect that this image is AI-generated.

Started watching Ted Lasso with my 11-year-old and when Roy Kent first appeared she said he looked odd, like he was CGI and she SWEARS she hadn’t seen the online memes about this before. So whatever those weird meme people saw, apparently she’s seeing the same thing 😵‍💫

“Why won’t you do anything about those cockroaches in your house?” “Can’t help it. They’re here to stay.” “Ow! Why did you throw your toaster at me?!“ “Not me. Toaster’s gone rogue.”

Apart from everything else, broadcasting the shooting of a terrorist live across the world will absolutely, undoubtedly, inspire future terrorist acts. If you don't believe so, just try to think for a second about what a terrorist is actually trying to achieve.

DON‘T YOU MAKE ME DEFEND TRUMP. DON‘T YOU *DARE* MAKE ME DEFEND THE MOTHERFUCKER But he clearly said that the current economic crisis was (in his view) a small price to pay for (in his view) defeating Iran because they could destroy LA; and NOT that losing LA would itself be a small price to pay.

(There would have been another “in his view” in there about Iran’s capability to destroy LA, but I ran out of characters) (I ignored San Diego for the same reason)
