I'm glad Koenig got a post-Trek turn as the mysterious telepath spymaster Bester on Babylon 5. A whole clutch of Easter eggs—named for a great old sf writer, did the Prisoner "be seeing you" thing, and was, well, him. Like an elder blessing the show.

Wait wait wait Koenig *wrote* the Land of the Lost episode with the Sleestack twist? Where the scientist thought they were his ancestors but it turned out they were the future of his people? That snapped my little-kid head back!

Hey, that’s *really* racist.

"It is kind of crazy that we live in the heart of the tech community and yet we can’t tap into those resources," he told me. "It’s one of those things that’s baffled us for a long time, about how we can't secure major funding from these individuals or companies."

I talked to a development person at the Crucible for a story last spring. They own their building, but grants and funding that used to come from the city and the school district have dried up, as has the Bay's fire-arts/Burning Man scene. Tech companies used to do team-building there, but no more.

Hey I'm back haunting Business Insider today with some thinky thoughts about Hollywood drawing its latest crop of villains from Silicon Valley...and why the fun show "Cupertino" is evidence the techlash has spread to your grandma's living room. www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-vi...

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Oh. I see: “When I asked Mayer if it’s somewhat depressing to imagine a frictionless future when birthday celebrations, holiday gifts and family vacations are planned by AI, she seemed caught off guard. ‘haven’t really thought that through,’ she said.” www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/s...

One begins to suspect that some people’s goal in starting a business is not actually to make the thing the business nominally sells, but just to make money, somehow, at whatever?

I’m more upset than necessary about the Marissa Mayer AI thing. I could literally point at -*any random little girl* and say, I sense that she’s empathetic! Creative! and loves animals! And win the lottery. What kind of person would tell this story out loud??

Well, Batman would’ve fought Holmes, too, though, so

The New York Times@nytimes.com

“Clayface,” a horror movie about a lesser-known Batman villain, was No. 1 at North American theaters this weekend. Its unexpected challenger was “You Can See Everything,” a documentary about the disgraced Theranos founder, which surged in its second weekend.

Actually Fiedler is kind of a Batman villain, too. “In this reconstruction of Crime Alley, you will see the murders of your parents again and again, as portrayed by the actors who played them in a movie. Can you save them? Do you still want to be Batman, Bruce?”

Sure the Democrats claim to want to bring manufacturing back to the US, but then they insult hardworking blue collar laborers on the cheesecake assembly line

“Quadripeds.” No matter what Boston Dynamics—which is Hyundai—calls them, they’re not dogs. Copy desks are a critical line of defense between humanity and robots.

All I can add: Very good people are still at the magazine, working hard to do great work. The editors who tried to save the place, David and Jeanna, did their best at a really loaded, uncertain time. Imho, the union-busting owners bear the blame for this sad mess.

Emmet Fraizer@woolsox.bsky.social

Last summer, Scientific American's owners were stalking the site, making sure it wasn't being too critical of Trump. This summer, the magazine was sold and gutted. I wrote about it for The Nation www.thenation.com/article/soci...

A corollary of the King & Worthington peer review paper is that “by every measure we could construct” (e.g. fidelity of recall, ability to summarize, etc) AIs are better than people at *reading* papers, too. This suits the very large class of academics who don’t really want their papers to be read.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

Look, I'm naive and think people should believe things, but just on its face this idea destroys democracy. We're supposed to vote based on what candidates believe and what they'll do. If they don't tell us...how can we vote for them?

Philip Bump@pbump.com

It's obviously dumb to apply how-to-win-elections logic to non-candidates who are reacting out of moral outrage. But standing by this position is essential because if Matt acknowledges that his ability to predict what makes candidates successful is wrong, it kneecaps his entire approach.

Total respect for NBC's Monica Alba, who asked Trump exactly the question he needs to answer. By refusing to answer, and attacking her, he has effectively told the world that no, sexual abuse allegations do no mean a thing to him. Imagine if she wasn't there. We'd be the poorer for it.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

😳 WOMAN REPORTER: Do sexual abuse allegations mean nothing to you, sir? TRUMP: Wait. Wait! Wait wait wait. Slow down. Who are you with? REPORTER: NBC, sir. But they are very serious sex abuse allegations TRUMP: Quiet! Isn't she a fresh person? You're a horrible little reporter, aren't you?
