“There is nothing better than imagining other worlds,” he said, “to forget the painful one we live in. At least so I thought then. I hadn’t yet realized that, imagining other worlds, you end up changing this one.” – Umberto Eco, Baudolino

Joyce Carol Oates: you know Oates: i have a take Barker: oh shit Barker: oh shit this is gonna be good Poe: how do you figure? Barker: edgar Barker: it's a joyce carol oates take Barker: they're always good Poe: i don't know about that Barker: they're good to me, edgar

Also, writers should avoid conflating current "AI" with science fiction. This is not HAL from 2001. This is not the Terminator or Skynet. It's the Magic 8 Ball using probability and statistics to determine its answer.

This post is unavailable.

Bluesky devs waxing philosophic about the power of AI and vibe coding, and yet, a simple Edit button is their final boss.

The cowardice from our elected and technological leaders is just staggering.

“Everyone considers it fucking nuts.” Inside Apple, I'm told "not a soul" supports Donald Trump's Lake Ontario rebrand to "Lake America," but the company is also resigned to making such concessions to avoid the White House's rage. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/apple-maps...

If Google is changing map names over the weakest of political reasons, you should not trust them and use a different service. Honestly, you should consider dropping Google wherever you can. It's a terrible company run by terrible people.

New personal YouTube policy: if a channel uses AI thumbnails, I unsubscribe (if subscribed) and set the channel to "Don't not recommend." #youtube

Pod Save America is chasing 2016 vibes by hiring Nate Silver. It seems like a hail mary for an increasingly out-of-touch organization that now caters to right-learning moderate Democrats versus their original leftwing audience. They should just merge with the Bulwark and call it a day.

Years ago, I went to Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family, but these days it's all ads, clickbait, and engagement farming. It feels like an abandoned town covered in billboards.

Every YouTube woodworking video, “I value safety as my highest priority!” Proceeds to then demonstrate a cut on a table saw using his face as a push stick.

Every day, my opinion on social media grows darker and I find myself questioning my use of it. I find there are few positives, and I'm struggling any find more. Meanwhile, it's the only source of anger and anxiety in my life. I dislike how it weaponizes people and enables grifters of all sorts.

When normal people saw Jurassic Park, they understood it as a story about trying to profit off dangerous not fully understood technology. Tech bros saw it as a business plan.

I honestly don’t see this happening. The Starship program has run into setbacks costing them at least a year and a half. SpaceX has to wrap up everything with Starship by 2028 and hope a republican wins the presidency. If a dem wins, Musk is in a world of hurt. Deservedly so.

The Artemis astronauts displaying the best of humanity while exploring the celestial heavens while the worst of humanity rages in his lonely little white house.

I must not AI. AI is the art-killer. AI is the creative-death that brings artistic obliteration. I will face AI. I will permit it to pass over me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the AI has gone there will be nothing. Only my creativity will remain. #ai

Breaking news: ICE expects to spend $38.3 billion on its plan to acquire warehouses across the U.S. and retrofit them into immigrant detention centers that can hold tens of thousands of people, according to agency documents.

Wire fences could be strung within a matter of days, and then the Iron Guard could get about the business of collecting Jews. Kaempffer wanted to get started.

He would let the Iron Guard gather up the first "guests" in whatever haphazard fashion they wished while he oversaw the design of the physical plant.” The Keep, F. Paul Wilson

"There was a row of old warehouses on the eastern edge of the nexus. If they were not in use or not being put to any important use, they could act as the seed of the Ploiesti camp."

This cannot be something a civilian law enforcement agent is allowed to wear in the US — and an agency that has a culture that tolerates this cannot be saved.

Fucking surreal that people dressed like this and carrying assault rifles are permitted to kidnap people off our streets

As a lifelong Dem, I have zero faith in them to do anything. At best they are an appeasement party. At worst, they are complicit.

The thing is ... the credibility well has been poisoned. In this age of Trump, all I see and read from government folks are non-stop lies or meaningless performative gestures. If you are going to do something, then do something. Spare me the theatrics. People are dying.

Donald Trump must fire Kristi Noem immediately. Or Democrats will initiate impeachment proceedings against her in the House. We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

This is powerful from military veterans about Alex Pretti. "They took his life. Don't let them take his name."

Save America Movement@saveamericamvmt.bsky.social

Trump and his allies are already smearing Alex Pretti’s name instead of confronting the truth. Veterans who served our country and lived because of the VA are outraged. Alex was a VA nurse and hero, not a villain. Stay informed. Join the fight. Follow @saveamericamvmt.bsky.social

The more I learn about AI, the higher my eyebrow raises at people who fawn over it. This is not going to end well, and a lot of you will be looking very foolish.
