Sadly, it seems that global foreign relations are affected by domestic issues in the USA to a degree no one realized. And it's the domestic issues in the USA that got the guy into the White House.

All of that can be true all while it is the belief by most Danes and Greenlanders that the current U.S. president is a buffoon, vane and malicious and wholly unfit to serve.

Building/having US bases in Greenland creates jobs for the local population, which is a plus. It MAY also benefit Denmark/Greenland w.r.t. defense. Again, it might not, but then why hasn't he already invaded? And how would additional bases make any meaningful difference?

My take is he's got a mess on his hands in the middle east, and wanted a "win" on Greenland. No need to tell the US public that the arrangements were already in place, and that the US—not Denmark—was the party to scale down US power projection in Greenland in the 70s/80s/90s.

The point is to lower tensions. If today USA wants to invade, they absolutely can—like they could yesterday, no need for more bases. Building bases may increase security for Greenland + rest of NATO. It's also an opportunity to work together, which I'm sure is the long game for Danish diplomacy.
