“Nothing is better for the soul than to make another soul less sad.” — Paul Verlaine, tr. by C. F. MacIntyre, from 101 Poems; “Sagesses,” *** Kenji red morning glory

* In the Shade * Even the cedars, lacking leaves, Show spots of dullest gold As if being evergreen In autumn is getting old. And if I always tell the truth, Speak plain as plain can be, There is much that you will rue In my biography. So it’s better that I hide In this cedar-shaded spot

Dear Norah, Whatever your reasons For not showing up And not knowing why (Maybe you didn’t want to leave The beach) I think a better line would be “My heart is drenched in Why” —The Guy Across the Sea

Kenneth Rexroth again: Many women have said goodbye To me and someday we will say Goodbye also. At last the hands Unbraid themselves and the head turns Away taking the eyes and lips Away finally forever. The cords of the heart that were so Tightly knotted are untied.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was a primary architect & driving force behind the organized movement that ultimately won American women the right to vote in 1920. She died on #OTD in 1902 & never got to vote in her lifetime. Because of her (and others), we can. #VOTE #WomensRights #WomensSuffrage

From Kenneth Rexroth’s The Dragon And The Unicorn: The doom of versifying— Orpheus was torn to pieces By the vindictiveness of Women or struck down by the Jealousy of heaven. Me: And I thought poetry Was a pretty safe profession. But now I find I’m totally Obsessed with truth & women.

From Walden, to which I refer: “…a modern drawing-room invented for the ladies of the harem and the effeminate natives of the Celestial Empire, which Jonathan should be ashamed to know the names of. I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion.”

Here TW is blue and tired “Of speech and action.” So what does he do? Writes a retraction… It’s just how art’s wired. It’s an act of speech That does not expire. So sing when you’re blue.

The search for love—along with the desire to understand why it can hurt so bad—has animated fiction for centuries. The Atlantic has chosen 50 titles, including "The Safekeep" by Yael van der Wouden, that stand out in the canon. See the full list here: theatln.tc/Hmxt5lTP

Good morning from Vermont. Crisp air, heavy mist, and that sharp autumn shift. Every blade of grass is wearing a coat of frost this morning, glittering like broken glass before the sun burns it off. I'm sipping my coffee grateful for the simple beauty around me. ☕️🌾✨ 📸 MFCarter

* Winslow Homer’s Maine * I wish we spoke More of *this* Homer… Not the cartoon or the poet. Call him “artist”? A misnomer. He is the land & ocean Meeting one another. #art #NewEngland

* George Eliot * Her name was Mary Ann Evans. But she called herself “George.” It gave her the status of a man Which made for a more “Delicious autumn” And every other season In years a woman hid her reason.

'Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love–that makes life and nature harmonise. Delicious autumn!' George Eliot from a letter dated 1 October 1841
