It's (probably) good science fiction,... but there's a lot of preachiness. It's better handled than the preachiness of Lewis' Space Trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet (1938), Perelandra (1943), and That Hideous Strength (1945)) And maybe there is another turn, I'm not done reading yet.

As you read this story, keep in mind that we should have always had free school breakfast and lunch for all children, always. As the cheapest option! One of the best policy ROIs that there is!

About 2 million kids have lost SNAP since deep cuts were enacted last year. The ripple effects: Kids losing SNAP also lose automatic enrollment for free meals at school. And as more kids lose SNAP, their schools may be forced to drop Community Eligibility.

Here's what really happened with this Elissa Slotkin saga: She said that a Dem Congress will seek real accountability for Trump's enablers, and a bunch of MAGA goons decided this posed a major threat to their political project. Which it actually does! newrepublic.com/article/2168...

🚨NEW: Nearly 200,000 women and girls are incarcerated in the U.S. on any given day — a number that stands out globally. Where are they held? For what charges? And what conditions do they face? Our latest report, Women's Mass Incarceration: The Whole Pie, answers that & more 🧵

And this is yet another reason that NYT piece on Denver "solving homelessness" reads like copaganda... Sweeps w/ social workers are probably less violent than sweeps without them.... but its v. hard to imagine something called a "sweep" and conducted by uniformed officers that is not traumatizing.

The reports include research by people close the issue. In the PATHS report, a "poverty scholar" researcher Ron says, "If you ask anybody who lives on the streets what's your biggest fear of of anything in the morning, they're gonna say a garbage truck." bsky.app/profile/repo...

We've gotta learn to believe these authoritarians are who they say they are the first time they tell us. Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's home this morning. Her office says, "The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong." Here are some things I'm not seeing enough of in our online chatter. 🧵

But also public because people who have the private-resources of care to avoid perpetration either haven't received the care that would have redirected them from harming others OR need special treatment because their private resources enable them to evade accountability structures or both

family abolition... [or if you prefer significant reform of the collapse of communal care infrastructure onto the family] and prison abolition go together both are, in an overly simplistic analysis, responses to deficits of care in a society obsessed w/ profit & control

It's interesting to think about abolition as a care project specifically a care project which takes the needs of both victims and perpetrators of crimes seriously and one which cannot rely on family as the structure of care (even as family-destruction protests against prisons remain important)

That the alternative practices we need, the accountability and structures that people need to do restitution and create a new path forward... these are structures of care that enable acts of care and are necessarily public to some degree because as a society we are morally traumatized

Vo's book is alter-ian (neither better nor worse than our world, just fantastic) it showcases the monastery and mendicant ways as alternatives to the enclosure of the family sphere,... but also shows how mendicants often rely on family care rather than really subverting it.

The last few days I've been reading Saltcrop (Yume Kitasei) & A Long and Speaking Silence (Nghi Vo) Saltcrop is dystopian, and the emotional tension between the sisters (present and absent in the book) is a significant driver of the narrative as is the care for a grandmother who needs them.

The exhaustion and enclosure of the family is on full display in that book, and the characters struggle to imagine anything else. A sea adventure is an escape, a source of guilt, and a response to a care need (a missing sister).

It's interesting that Record of a Spaceborn Few is also the Wayfarers' book which depicts the most traditional natal family structure... while other books focus more on joining a found family, radical hospitality (after a history of exploitation), and recognition of/acceptance of one's personhood.

Sue Burke's Semiosis series offers another vision of communal care at a much smaller scale. It suggests that agonism between humans and the animals and plants they rely on for survival, as well as agonism between generations must play a significant role in thinking longitudinally about care.

Becky Chambers' books both the Monk and Robot books and each of the Wayfarer's books think about care. Probably the Record of a Spaceborn few is the one which thinks most significantly about how communal care develops over time,... which I suppose any story that reflects on generation ships must.

We may jump straight to the work of eugenicist Aldous Huxley, who's dystopian BraveNewWorld satirizes alternatives to family care that replace privatized care with controlling state universal-care-as-control keeping its constituents divided into castes, chemically disabled, and compliant.

Confession: I'm delighted the church I was helping out has found a bridge pastor who can support them every week.... but I was hoping to pay down debt with the honoraria they pay for a couple weeks of pulpit supply. It's not why I preach. But I'm not in a financial position to think nothing of it.

I want to see a candidate for U.S. Senate run on reparations for all victims of ICE's illegal activity.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️
