RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Okay, so we get some process to certify that the certification was done properly. What then? How do we certify that the certification certification certified the certification correctly? Okay, so we get some process to certify that the certification certification was done properly. What then? How do

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Blanche on CBS says his suit against Alaska is "asking the court to step in where the Alaska Supreme Court didn't, which is to look at federal law and if necessary to allow a process for Alaska to decide who should be certified as the winner." (So, the voters won't get to decide. Got it.)

Sick, sick, sick

BREAKING: Fifth Circuit, on a 10-7 vote, says no bond hearing for detained immigrants pending removal proceedings, no matter how long they're detained β€” reversing panel decision and district courts. www.ca5.uscourts.gov/opinions/pub...

Looks like I'm gonna have one of those fun theses that is basically a long explainer of how everything I tried was actually a bad idea from the get

Something happened! People are saying race is involved! We're investigating, thoroughly! What's that? No, there are absolutely no pertinent details we can share!

"I am holding Israel accountable for its actions by ____________" when you fill in the blank you should probably pause and do a little thinky thing and consider if doing that does actually in any way shape or form hold Israel accountable for its actions

Like "I am holding Israel accountable for its actions by _yelling_at_this_jewish_guy_I_just_met_" is a bad fill-in, this thing doesn't do that thing, stop it

Man, great times to be in the hull welding business, I guess

Faytuks Network@faytuksnetwork.bsky.social

IRGC claims that it struck 4 oil vessels in the northern parts of the Persian Gulf and claims 3 more hit mines near the Strait of Hormuz, a total of 7 vessels in one night. We are pending independent verifications on such claims.

Feels like it's going to be a super exciting wild westy time in black hat cybersecurity for young idiots with energy, enthusiasm, and a rack of gpus to keep them warm in the winter months

Also, we should figure out how to make data centers provide municipal heating with their waste heat, they're just a big ol' heating element that happens to do math while it heats

It's a cybergrunge future, bay-beeeeeeee

Leah@leah.myatproto.social

I have seen the future and the future is going to be janky AF. The world wide web not of walled manicured gardens, but rather, shanty towns of cloned software, patched together agents navigating the jankery.

Exxon Valdez released about a quarter million barrels. Deepwater Horizon let out about 5 million. Kharg Island has storage for about 30 million barrels, and some pipelines running in from the mainland, so howzabout we just *not* do a huge environmental disaster

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

White House is considering targeted strikes on Kharg Island, which handles approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports. The goal is to force concessions on Tehran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz before the US midterm elections on Nov. 3.

The Silmarillion is many things (good, even), but it is absofuckinglutely not a "banger"

Noah Weinberger@noahweinberger2003.bsky.social

Bangers that I read as a kid that I wish people would read now: 1) CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia series 2) Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time series 3) Everything Tolkien ever wrote (including the Simarillion) 4) Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth 5) Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials

"the government is crumbling into independent poleis but the elections will be on the same days, things are totally cool, just chill guys, this is all very in the democratic tradition"

Consistent confusion in the SCOTUS about whether it's the 14th amendment or the 14 words

Mike Sacks@mikesacks.bsky.social

SCOTUS making its first move to go after race-neutral high school admissions standards:

I still maintain that any time someone's net worth passes a billion, we should throw them a big fancy ceremony, give them a little plaque and trophy and a hat the says "I WON CAPITALISM", take all their stuff and stick them on an island with all the other "winners"

Shoulda kept my house in charleston, the drive to the beach is gonna get shorter faster than even I expected

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Yikes! The β€œdoomsday glacier” is melting faster than scientists expected. NOAA projects another 10 - 12 inches of sea level rise along US coastlines by 2050. Think on what that means… πŸ’¦ Miami: Streets & neighborhoods underwater πŸ’¦ NYC: Greater flooding risks for homes, businesses, subways

If these are the only two options you can come up with, you have already been driven insane There are a whole spectrum of holy shit terrible to wow pretty good, actually, possible ways this could play out without everybody gettin AI murdered or everybody gettin' infinite AI blowjobs

This is a researcher at Anthropic. Some of these people have lost their minds! What is mainlining Claude all day doing to them?

Also, actually playing the music is a very joyous, human thing to do even if everybody hates it and you suck because not all music-making is or ought be about audience pleasing, money making, fame/respect obtainment, demonstration of technical mastery, or production of some lasting artifact

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Never thought I'd have to say this but there's an inherent joy in working hard at something, slowly getting better at it and taking pride in the results. And you'll find that other people will be impressed by the results of your dedication too, in a way they will not be impressed by your AI shit

Playing with a music generator just doesn't do the samething in your brainthing even if it generates something that could inoffensively cover the silence in an elevator 7 out of 10 times

Look at the turtle. Enjoy the turtle. Then give this guy a couple of bucks.

Can the djini be stuffed back in the bottle? Nope. It's just math. Great big piles of math, but not actually all that complicated math. We might not fully understand what is happening, but plenty enough people know how to *make it happen*, in a practical sense. (or we might, depending who you ask)

Is it going to ruin ______: low budget advertising imagery: yes high budget advertising imagery: probably also yes ad jingles: yes other music that gets stuffed in your face: yeah live music: probably not for a while, at least development of new musicians: don't know, this one's a bit complicated

Should someone be given shit for using it? Maybe. But the volume, wetness, velocity, and stank need to be calibrated to the situation. Should a bunch of the leadership of the major companies go to jail for stuff they've already done? Should their companies survive? Almost certainly; probably not.

I've been to folkston. I didn't have a nice time, and that was at least 33% my own fault. The cops were nice enough to let us know in no uncertain terms that they were extremely ready to take a bribe, though. Like drove us to an atm cuffed in the cruiser ready.

If you've ever attempted to cut down a tree in any sort of manual fashion, you'll intuitively understand that a fleshy limb is going to offer rather less of a challenge

I think it is bad, actually, to pursue the idea that everybody should get bespoke apps generated for them constantly while it still more or less involves cranking a lawnmower and letting it run in someone else's yard for a few hours

This particular objection disappears entirely once we're actually off of burning carbon, but we ain't there yet. Compute is relatively carbon-cheap, but it's not free. We shouldn't blow our budget on incredibly reduplicative effort.

Well, yeah. Duh. That's the whole concept of trade protectionism. The local gobs don't have to compete with fur'ners that'll do it cheaper.
