"In many cities, allowing more homes in built-up neighborhoods is the single most impactful emissions strategy that’s fully under local control, and new research shows liberalizing in-town homebuilding can bring climate benefits quickly." usa.streetsblog.org/2026/10/22/o...

usa.streetsblog.orgOur Best Bet To Confront Climate Change in the Trump Era? Build More Apartments — Streetsblog USAMost climate strategies are hamstrung by Washington and culture wars across the country. But zoning reform may be the exception.

Under current zoning, this proposal isn’t allowed and therefore requires full city council approval. What a waste of admin time and taxpayer money. It’s a 5-story building next to the train in the city that invented the skyscraper. Just build it already!

A 52-unit apartment building could replace a retail strip near the Diversey Brown Line station. buff.ly/8EXmZ1N

Every IL state senator who isn’t pulling for the BUILD Act is doing so because they don’t want to lose votes from wealthy homeowners who don’t think duplexes fit their “neighborhood character” Call them. Tell them vulnerable citizens need more homes in IL. We need more housing.

Plus, the more households we build in IL, the more electoral votes we keep. Red states like Florida and Texas are on track to gain 6+ representatives and electoral votes. Democrats can’t sit this one out and screw themselves over for generations.

I consider public input to be a necessary evil (since it can never be fully representative of people’s perspectives). But this NITA event did it well: -central location in commuter hub (Union Station) -3pm-6pm -you could literally walk up to the president of the CTA and directly give her feedback

NITA Chicago@nitachicago.bsky.social

Are you commuting right now? 🤔 Stop by the NITA Open House in the Burlington Room at the Grand Hall in Union Station‼️

I think it’s great that the new agency is coming right out of the gate and looking into TOD. TBD if they keep this initiative in “pilot program purgatory” or actually do anything impactful. But I’m cautiously optimistic that the wind is in their sails.

Here we see really gorgeous multi-colored aurora happening in Alkeevsky, Tatarstan, Russia. The geomagnetic latitude-equivalent of this in North America is around New York City, Boise or Chicago.

There is “a powerful revenue option completely in City Council’s control: changing land use rules to grow the tax base - particularly by upzoning residential neighborhoods.”

nathansheskey.bsky.social@nathansheskey.bsky.social

Our city is once again facing a contentious budget season, but it doesn't have to be this way. Our government could legalize more homes, bringing the cost of living down for everyone while growing the total tax base. citythatworks.substack.com/p/budget-tal...

Reminder: multifamily buildings are BANNED in most of Chicago. As long as our leaders choose not to legalize more density: -fewer families can afford to stay -marginalized groups won’t be able to move here from Republican states -native ecosystems will get ripped up for suburban housing

Chicago Cityscape@chicagocityscape.com

since this map was published over four years ago here's the change in where Chicago still *bans* apartments, condos, and affordable housing: March 2022: 40.7% August 2026: 38.9, a reduction of 1.8 points 👏🏼 [August 2026 🗺️ attached]

good thread alert

A candidate for alderman asked me to provide them with background reading on housing, and it turned into quite a list! I enjoyed putting it together, so I thought I'd also share it here. I've organized into three categories: describing the problem, describing solutions, and partnership solutions 🧵

SRO’s are a really important lower rung of housing. we need to make them easier to build, or more people will end up on the streets. see the OG thread for actions you can take at city council, and spread the word!

Abundant Housing Illinois@abundanthousingil.bsky.social

we're looking for members to support *more* SROs, not fewer. Ald. Dowell introduced O2026-0027579, which would mean SROs are no longer permitted in specific residential zoning districts. While no new SROs are proposed, this makes housing harder to build.

The only practical way to fix this is state level reform. Alders will almost certainly never give up this discretionary power for their entire ward.

McKie's Disc Jockey Show Lounge@mckiesdjlounge.bsky.social

In my ward, NIMBY is disguised as community vote.

This is ridiculous. And it happens all over Chicago. 3 things need to change: -upzone, or make zoning refer to minimum # of units, not just max -stop weaponizing “community input” to justify aversion to change -get rid of aldermanic prerogative

Why can't LA build more affordable housing? Well, you see, because a building located in an R5(CW) zone shall not cast a shadow on a lot located in the R4 or R5 zone for more than two hours each day between the hours of 9AM and 3PM on the Winter Solstice and 9AM and 5PM on the Summer Solstice.

I biked on Bryn Mawr Ave for the first time a few weeks ago. The new bike lanes were nice, but unusable. Cars were parked in the bike lanes on every block. Every single parked car in this picture is parked illegally

Put this in the ridiculous ordinance hall of fame.

Minnesota Star Tribune@startribune.com

After more than an hour of contentious debate, the Minneapolis City Council narrowly passed an ordinance on Thursday to require a driver in a driverless vehicle.

Good thing Minneapolis’ mayor has indicated he’ll veto this. Hopefully Chicago’s mayor does the same if our city council has the same bad idea. I’m not a Waymo defender by any means, but requiring a human driver in autonomous vehicles is a silly waste of resources.

In the same meeting, revealed how the association has successfully downscaled mixed-use development in the area to fit the 'character' Leopard, meet face. Lets build any and all types of housing.

Joseph Miscimarra 🇺🇸@jmisci.bsky.social

My neighborhood association president wanted to downsize, so he sold his house & applied to 3 apartments. All 3 turned into a bidding war. He lost each time and had to move out of the neighborhood. Our neighborhood assoc. president was priced out of our neighborhood. Think about that.

The biggest victory here isnt even the bus lane itself. Its a victory over The Process: - make a committee - meet with The Groups - make a report - start a non-binding referendum - make a pilot - make a report - make a plan - deploy a few years later People are SICK of this.

People are sick of this process 1. Make a committee with all relevant interest groups 2. Committee produces report 3. Report recommends pilot program 4. Pilot program needs appropriations 5. Multi year pilot produces report 6. Full rollout Just do the thing you were elected to do!

I didn’t attend climate week but: 1—US is falling way behind on electrification 2—even if US electrified, electricity generation isn’t decarbonizing fast enough 3—public incentives & land use policy are still vastly weighted toward inefficient cars & trucks 4—transit ridership remains in crisis

Why doesn’t Molina-Gonzalez have the “notable controversy” icon? She chose not to keep Lawrence Reed detained after he assaulted a hospital social worker, despite 15 prior convictions (including arson). Reed later set a woman on fire on a Blue Line. Transit riders deserve better from our judges.

📢 The Injustice Watch judicial election guide is here! We spent months researching all 61 Cook County judges on your ballot this fall so you can make an informed decision about who should remain a judge. buff.ly/jpBxfAa

A safe city & transit system relies on judges who can appropriately assess risk. A man who literally *knocked out* a social worker in the psychiatric ward of a hospital and tried to set fire to the Thompson Center is a risky person to let loose in public. This judge should simply not keep her job.

Right before the White Sox rain delay was supposed to end yesterday, I went to find the Pope Leo seat. No joke—right as I touched it, the stadium announced $5 hot dogs for fans waiting out in the rain. I’m not a superstitious guy…but the White Sox magic is something else

The only logical next step for the ISFA is to negotiate with the White Sox to redevelop the ocean of parking lots around the stadium. The best stadiums always have been—and always will be—stadiums surrounded by actual neighborhoods.
