Spent the morning here making some insect habitats in the pale October light with some fabulous humans. London is the best. #bethnalgreen #london #urbangardens #community #insects #stagbeetles #bringontheinsects

Wrestling with research at my desk as I sat reading ‘The Long Death’ by Ralph K Andrist in which he describes the California gold rush and its effect on the Arapahoe Nation. Looked up to take a breath & saw this mottled apparition. #sunset #clouds #sky #research #ralphkandrist

HELP! This weekend I'm selling some prints to benefit a nonprofit that some friends and I started. They're 11x14 & printed professionally on thick cardstock. You can hang them as is, or they're high enough quality to frame. What should the price be per print? ALL the money goes to the non-profit.

I finished Tarjei Vesaas’s THE ICE PALACE (translated by Elizabeth Rokkan) a few nights ago. It’s one of those very short books (like Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea or Johnson’s Train Dreams) that bypasses the intellect and shoots straight into you, lodging somewhere very deep. (1)

If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend it. It’s weirdly magical yet very much dealing in the real. A beautiful, haunting book. (2) #tarjeivessas #theicepalace #novels #novellas #norwegianliterature #workintranslation

I am such a sucker for hand painted signs. I feel they sort of tell a story. This one is on Wood Street. #handpainting #signage #typography #lettering #woodstreet #walthamforest #london

You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while. Why? Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year. Deal? 1/15 #bees

I have an ongoing fascination with the food photography in shop windows in London. It seems to constitute its very own specialised niche of image-making whose sole purpose if instilling desire backfires spectacularly. #photography #foodphotography #london #shopwindows

Spotted this beautiful hand lettering wedged between two doorways on the High Street in Leyton yesterday. ‘Repair … Best English Leather .. used only…’ #lettering #ghostsigns #typography #leyton #london #bestenglishleather

Shoreditch diptych: on one side the chaotic, random & accidental markings of life in a big city; on the other, the result of hours in a boardroom, massive amounts of money, endless branding exercises and market research. I know which one I prefer. #grafitti #erasure #london #shoreditch #boxpark

It saddens me to discover this project only as it's transforming. However, I look forward to seeing what it becomes.

As some of you on here know, I've been part of the Dark Mountain Project since 2014. I love my fellow Mountaineers & the work we published. Sadly, the books are coming to an end, but the good news is... (1) Autumn Equinox News from the Mountain darkmountainproject.substack.com/p/autumn-equ...

‘To the two little boys that stop at the lavender on their bikes, PTO’. Such a tender sweet note spotted today nestled in a lavender bush as I walked to a friend’s house. Yes, I did turn it over to read the rest. It was a promise of (1)

that Dark Mountain will continue as an organisation, publishing new work in the online edition, hosting the archive and bookshop on the website, and maintaining a creative hub for writers and artists responding to the tumultuous times we are in. (2)

Knowing when to let things go is as important as getting them up and running. Our final issue will be published in October. Come to the online launch or the in-person one in London. Information about those is in the link above. (3) #darkmountain #art #writing #environment

Years ago I spent the night at Walter de Maria’s Lightning Field in New Mexico. Walking along the Norfolk coast yesterday, I was struck by how this wind farm out at sea resembles that piece of land art. It really got me thinking about how we value objects in wild places… (1)

Berwick-upon-Tweed. The last time I was here was 20 years ago, pregnant with the kid I’ve just left at Edinburgh University. A closing of the circle in many ways. A new chapter begins… #berwick #revisiting #lifecycles
