Of course the White House stands by Christopher Columbus. In my decade of doing anti-trafficking work globally, the most obvious lesson I learned was this: Traffickers and pedophiles always stand with other traffickers and pedophiles.

Unless Americans and Canadians deal with our colonial wounds of settler colonialism and genocide, we will never heal from our anti-immigrant hatred. Settler privilege is a helluva drug.

Western theology has nothing on eastern theology. This isn’t because to be western is to be inherently bad. It’s because eastern Christianity is closer in proximity to Jesus and the earliest Christians. And it’s because western Christianity has largely been shaped by Empire.

Christians can’t go from, “Jesus defeated death!” on Easter Sunday to “Let’s destroy a civilization” 2 days later. Death is the enemy. And Christians have a moral duty to non-violently oppose the empires that kill. Jesus suffered death in Empire’s hands so no one else has to.
